Lost Gold of WW2: A Dying Declaration (2020)
Why has the team changed?
Think about it, people.
Why would a team change between series 1 & 2, if there are trillions of dollars of gold buried in this Phillipine mountainside.
Even though the first series was quite well put together, I was pretty shocked when I saw that the team had completely changed. It seems like John Casey has now invited his brother onto series 2. His brother seems to have zero knowledge of mining and contributes nothing to the first episode?
This kind of proves that this series must be fake. No one would give up that kind of opportunity.
Even the team leader Peter Struzzeri, has left.
For this reason, alone, I will not be watching another episode.
Beck: Den förlorade sonen (2021)
Bring back Mikael Persbrandt
Unfortunately, Beck has lost all of its original spirit. The only thing that could possibly resurrect this series is the return of Gunvald Larsson, played by the enigmatic Mikael Persbrandt.
The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
The King of Cool trying to be too cool
First of all, the remake, starring Pierce Brosnan is better by some margin. This is strange, considering the original had the dream team of Jewison, Dunaway & McQueen, behind it. The problem is that the original just feels soulless. Steve McQueen, in particular, tries too hard to be cool. The result is that he comes across, as mechanical & wooden.
Soupçons (2004)
Excellent documentary
Even though this examination is clearly 'defence' biased, there is one piece of evidence that sealed his fate. There is more chance of someone winning the lottery than having two of your wives die, falling down the stairs. And then there is the clear narcissistic behaviour of not only the accused but also his defence team. I am quite surprised that the accused even decide to release this documentary, which paints him in an awful light. Perhaps this is a clue to the fact this man's ego had blinded him to the truth of how he came across in this film.
Mindhunter (2017)
Endure the slow start & you will be truly rewarded
When I first starting watching this, I thought it was pretty dull, but I kept watching ONLY because the average rating was 8+. During episode 3, I started getting into it, and began to appreciate the subtleties of the character development. As each episode played out, I began to truly appreciate the intricacies of the storyline. All of this is enhanced by an enigmatic soundtrack, that fits perfectly with regards to its historical context.
At one point, I thought it had actually been shot in 1977.
By the end of the series, I could safely rate this as one of the finest box sets, I've ever seen on NetFlix. It is a truly superb watch.
For me, the measure of how good a series is, is how emotionally invested I am, in the characters. This scores highly in that respect.
One word of advice. Stick with it, at the beginning. The character development & story line are slow to build, but build it does, and it just keeps on getting better.
Apparitions (2008)
An excellent intelligent drama
An extremely intelligent, well crafted drama series, that produces some very chilling moments. Martin Shaw shows us yet again, why he is one of the finest & most underrated actors of our time. I am desperately hoping that they produce a second series, as we are clearly left hanging at the end of episode 6.
This series brilliantly explores the interplay between the Vatican in Rome and its skeptical view on all things related to Exorcism. The continual struggle between Martin Shaw's character and his obstinate counterparts in Rome, make for a fascinating analysis of the inner workings of the Catholic Church.
I very rarely give a title 10/10, but I must make an exception here...
The Water Diviner (2014)
Mediocre
I really tried to like this film, but in the end, I was left with a flat, empty feeling. The characters failed to engage me, emotionally, and this film was littered with clichés. There were moments of good cinematography, but the scenes seemed to flit about more randomly than a bat on ecstasy. The love interest felt very out of place & forced. I was left with a feeling that the producers were trying to cache in on Russell Crowe's sex appeal. In general, this was a poorly directed film, and even more badly edited. However, it should be noted that this was Crowe's directorial debut, so I guess there is potential for improvement.
Lo imposible (2012)
Brilliant
An understated start. And then we are taken on a breathless, emotional roller coaster, the likes of which, Hollywood movies always fail to deliver.
Naomi Watts gives an Oscar winning performance. In fact she gives the performance of a lifetime.
The movie is full of unpredictability & realism, and unlike many, I actually thought the score was perfectly suited for this film. The final scene was incredibly moving. I always know when I am watching a good film, when I don't want it to end. The Impossible is one such movie.
Stunning, sad, inspiring & emotive.
It is a must watch.
