Mad Hot Ballroom (2005)
an inspiring, warm, touching, FUN movie
"Mad Hot Ballroom" is wonderful. It makes you laugh and cry. You are instantly drawn to the children in this movie and inspired by them. The movie makes you laugh - you can't help but love these kids (and root for them). The film takes the dance sequences and interweaves them with the children's lives outside of school but in a way that demonstrates why the dancing is so important. The movie never preaches. The movie shows NYC in a very positive life - it finds beauty in every neighborhood. And the comments by one of the principals while the dance competition appears on-screen embodies the significance of the arts in children's (and all our) lives. And the kids are kids - whether they are dancing or chatting. You will just love this movie!!!
The Thing About My Folks (2005)
a terrific movie
I saw this movie at a special preview at the Jacob Burns Film Center and found it heartwarming, genuine and funny. The casting is excellent; though most of the female cast members were unknown to me, I admired their skills and found their contributions to be very well done. All of the characters are very real. Having recently lost my father, I thought I might find the movie hard to watch but it is so true to life, it was easy to enjoy. Peter Falk is wonderful. Paul Reiser does a terrific job. His facial expressions in reaction to Falk's character are priceless. And his writing reflects his true enjoyment of family. I hope it gets a distributor so many more people can see and enjoy it. I wouldn't want the film to be compared to "Sideways" as another 'buddy' movie as I think it is much more a movie about father/son relationships as well as a movie about love/life partnerships. Well done!!
