I am not sure is this guy real athlete?
17 January 2017
Like I said in title, I am not sure that this guy is any kind of real athletete, nor he is doing anything special. But review Snow Leopard in his review said that '' The point of the movie was not the gymnastic routine, which in itself is neither difficult or interesting. Rather, this footage allowed W.K.L Dickson and the other Edison film-makers to gain experience in the studio'', if this is correct I understand point of this movie, but anyway, I can't give this movie more than rate 1. It is boring and you will not see any interesting. I think that his dog also thinks that he is boring. I also agree with Thomas, put bad athletic performance aside, but this guy deserve his name in movie title, like Annie Oakley.

Band Drill (1894)

Audio please
17 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie makes you to wonder yourself, in which year audio has became part of movies? Why? Because this movie shows band which are playing music, but you can't hear that music. I wondered, did they play real music or they are just pretending that they are playing music? This movie is better than movie where you can see athlete with wand, but still this is not on the level I expected. Movies from earlier years, 1892&1893 seems to be more interesting than movies from 1894...There are plenty of movies from 1894 I didn't watch yet, but the ones I looked already, didn't impress me. I hope that soon I will see progress because it becomes boring, but I really want to watch all which are available.

First author of animated movies
17 January 2017
Émile Reynaud is author of first few animated movies. His first animated movies is Pauvre Pierrot and this movie came after Pauvre Pierrot but I didn't see progress in animation, furthermore, this movie is far behind Pauvre Pierrot for several reasons. First, story is not interesting, second, it is difficult to follow characters in this movie. I watch 2 times and I didn't figure out that this are same persons in all scenes. I was thinking that these are different characters. Pauvre Pierrot has interesting story with few comic moments, but this movies doesn't have anything like that. But it is worth to see because it is one of earliest animated movies, and lasts for only 2 minutes, and anyone has 2 minutes to watch this.

First dance movie
12 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I am not fan of dance, but dance movies are often good. We can say that this is first dance movie ever and it is bad. I know, you will say to me, what do you expect, this is from 1894 ! But I watched all earlier movies and they are all some kind interesting, and this is first movie which was boring to me...dance is boring, girl is not pretty and dress looks like it is dirty.

I have read that Annabelle Moore acts in more movies, I hope that I will see progress in other movies... Now we live in time where when you more naked, you will have more money, unfortunately for Anabelle, she was born in wrong time, she wouldn't die peniless, or I am wrong?

Shooting star
11 December 2016
It is first film where someone is starring. And who is starring there? See title of movie. You don't know who is Annie Oakley? I did not know also, but Annie is interesting girl who made her career with gun.

Wikipedia says: ''Annie Oakley (born Phoebe Ann Mosey; August 13, 1860 – November 3, 1926) was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter. Her "amazing talent"[1] first came to light when the then-15-year-old won a shooting match with traveling-show marksman Frank E. Butler (whom she married). The couple joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show a few years later. Oakley became a renowned international star, performing before royalty and heads of state.''

I am curious, does USA people know who is Annie Oakley, is she recognized know or she is forgotten.

Wrong year?
11 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I thought that this movie is from 1893. Please check once more time is 1894 correct year.

This movie is fun movie which shows how the barber do his job. I have never been in barber shop, but it sounds interesting to me, and I am curious is it like a gossip shop for men, like hair salon for woman.

On YT you have version with music in background, although this is not original version (original version) has no any sounds, I suggest you to watch this sounded version because it is somehow more cheerful.

Did you notice that same scenes played two times? I am in group of people which doesn't notice this. I had to watch again to notice this.

First alcohol showed in movie
7 November 2016
I am chronologically watching movies from oldest to newest and I think that this is first movie which shows people drinking alcohol. I guess that this is beer, and I am glad that my favorite drink is first alcohol showed in movie. But I am not sure that drinking on job where you can hurt yourself in any moment.

I see in comments that this is earliest movie selected in USA national registry, but it is not correct, Newark athlete which is older is also included in this registry. I see that many comments said that this movie has better quality than movies which are recorded 20,30 years later, that is shame for guys which recorded this movies.

Oldest available cartoon
26 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Like I said in title of this review, this seems to be oldest available cartoon now. We have one which is older but it is lost film (Le Clown et ses chiens). This film was a part of Pantomimes Lumineuses which consist three movies created by Charles-Émile Reynaud. Film probably doesn't deserve this rate, but I increase my rate because of funny music. Sad thing is that inventor of animated movie die penniless, like many other inventors in history. And second sad thing is that before he dies, he throw away all of his work into river and that is a reason that 2 of 3 his movies from Pantomimes Lumineuses are considered as lost films.

Trivia for you :Do you know name of props used in film?
23 May 2016
In compare with other Edison (Dickson) installaments, this footage for me is poorest (eventually better than Monkeyshines). Quality is bad and in comparison with Men's Boxing it doesn't show any progress, quite to the contrary. Good things that film brings to me is increasing of my general knowledge. Until now I have no idea what Indian clubs are and what is their purpose. Second thing about that movie is that this movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It is currently the oldest film chosen to be in this Registry.

Men Boxing (1891)

First sport in movie
17 February 2016
Boxing is first sport ever shown in movie history. This film is not long, nor have quality like Rocky. There are two mens who are boxing and feeling happy about that. They have smile on their faces and I think that they want to film 12 rounds, not just few seconds.

But purpose of this movie is not to make injuries one to another, or became professional boxer. Real purpose is to test camera and show to world that you can record sport events too, not just traffic which is crossing bridge's or people who are moving around their gardens.

Short question, did you notice that ring is fake one? I haven't.

And one fact, first real boxing match was filmed 3 years after this one.

First public movie
10 February 2016
It is wrong credited as a first movie filmed in United States. First movies filmed in US are Monkeyshines 1, Monkeyshines 2 and third part of Monkeyshines which is losted and you will not see it ever, unfortunately.

I read somewhere that is first film which is shown in public, and i think that this fact is true. Quality of this movie is lot better than quality of 2 parts of Monkeyshines and we have clear view on person standing in front of camera. We can clearly see his face and it is positive side of this movie. Negative side was a fact that we can't see anything interesting and it is pretty much boring.

Leeds,London...
9 February 2016
After Louise Le Prince shown us a Leeds, and traffic crossing bridge in Leeds, Wordsworth Donisthorpe and William Carr Crofts decided to show us a capital -> London.

This movie is 2 year younger, or we can say that on another way, film made in Leeds is 2 years older than this movie and we can see how quality of this movie improved compared to older movie, and when I say quality of movie, i primarily think about quality of picture.

I wondered why we see Trafalgar square through circle shaped frame and I think that i found reason - they filmed this with an oval or circular frame on celluloid film using their 'kinesigraph' camera.

First sequel ever
9 February 2016
First of all, and how I say in summary title, this movie is first sequel of any movie in history of movies. And that what is not a rule and it is unusual for modern times is that the movie is better that original/first part.

We can see a little improvement in camera quality compared to 'Monkeyshines no1'. We can see a more details, but some details are still not visible (contours of face, more face details...).

It is not clear to me, is that same person from Monkeyshines No2? This person looks like a woman and I can't fully agree that person in G.Sacco Albanese.

First US film
28 January 2016
Monkeyshines is believed to be the first film shot in the United States. First 4 movies are credited to French pioneer Louise Le Prince, and my opinion that all of Le Prince movies are better than that.

You cannot clearly see what is happening in this video.

It's only value it that this movie will be remembered as the first film shoted in America. And how I can see there is two more movies named Monkeyshines and I think this is first movie who have sequels.

You can find this movie on youtube/wikipedia.

First musical instrument in movie is - melodeon
15 January 2016
As i say in title, this is first movie where we can see musical instrument. And that musical instrument is melodeon, a kind a similar instrument to 'harmonika', very popular instrument in my country. And I am so proud that 'harmonika' is first instrument that is recorded in movie.

That is reason to me to give higher vote to this film in compare to other Le Prince movies. I wachted all four and I can divide his movies to 2 simple groups - good movies (Roundhay garden scene and Accordion player), and not so good movies (Traffic crossing Leeds bridge and Man walking around the corner).

This is not first film
15 January 2016
As I wrote in title, this is not first, nor it is second movie ever recorded.

First movie ever was 'Man walking around the corner', second is 'Roundhay garden scene'. This is third film by Louise le Prince, and third film overall.

But we can say that is first film in which we can see animal !

For me, this movie is not interesting like a 'Roundhay garden scene', because it is too simple, and have no piece of mystery like a mentioned film.

Lenght of this movie is like every other Le Prince movie, and don't take much time to watch it, just about 2-3 seconds.

It is not oldest movie
17 December 2015
First I must say that is not oldest movie ever. Oldest movie ever is 'Man walking around the corner', directed and recorded by the same person - Louise Le Prince.

Opposed to 'Man walking around the corner' movie, this movie has all frames in good condition, and you can see what is happening in the movie.

I do not agree with the fact that is oldest movie ever, but I can agree that is first movie which features more than one person, and that is first movie ever which shows - woman !

Louise Le Prince would be very happy if he can see what he developed.

Oldest movie ever
16 December 2015
First, I must admit that I never heard about Louise Le Prince before I went in search for a oldest movie ever recorded. I heard about many movie pioneers, but never for Le Prince.

Now, I am very happy that i saw oldest movie ever recorded and I must recommend all people who want see this movie to watch it in slow motion (you can find slow motion version on YT), and you can find a version with all 16 frames remastered there (some versions have only 13 frames - two lost, one bad quality). Also, my recommendation is to find and read on internet about this movie and Le Prince, and you will find very interesting story.
