Runner Runner (2013)
piece of garbage
yuck. absolutely terrible. don't fork over your hard earned cash on this dump.
so predictable. lines seemed forced. beginning too rushed. everyone was a fag.
how did he even get the money to go to costa rica??
didn't he waste his money with all his friends? so he could gain tuition to work at "wallstreet"?? OK.
so they could lazily and obnoxiously explain every other detail like we were five but they kind of left a few (important!!) things out?!?!?
character development?? LOL!!!!
why was the plot so convenient? oh, i know. lazy writing.
don't waste any time watching this crap movie. i rented it but i didn't even return it. i just tossed this crapper in right into the garbage.
You're Next (2011)
this was so bad
i don't mind giving it one star, though. that song they kept playing was really catchy and it was the only good thing about the whole entire movie.
it was irritating how stupid everyone was. and the girl with the short hair and bangs that smokes and was supposed to be "cool" even tried getting her weirdo boyfriend to bang her next to his moms dead body. but of course he isn't up for it because it's not like it earns him money or anything.
the ending was just bad. the last survivor gets shot (shock) by a cop. she doesn't die. then the cop comes in (through the front door where there was a booby trap)...but instead of a gore scene, some crappy animated blood comes on the screen with the title of the movie and then the catchy song starts playing.
don't watch it.
Selena (1997)
watched it in Spanish class, too
disclaimer: my movie rating scale is not based on technicalities but based on how it made me feel.
really good movie. i would have to say this is probably the only good movie jennifer lopez has ever done, and while that isn't saying much, this is still worth the watch. you get to see selena grow up and start performing (even though when the child actress "sings", it's sorta unrealistic and can take away from the experience), and you also get to see her rise to fame, which is more hinted at rather than shown since all the major events of her performing just seem to sorta happen. and then you see it all end way too early.
the love story between the two characters is really sweet. selena was portrayed as really sweet and likable (as i'm sure she was due to the interviews that can be seen on youtube), and the ending will definitely make you cry if you're able to really get into the film.
kinda fast paced, still enjoyable. feel-good movie, even though the ending is really sad. has a lot of rewatch-ability to it, 10/10.
The Purge (2013)
semi-OK
started off very lame - very, very lame. "oh u got a promotion, sir" "yeah thanks!" they live in the suburbs and they have creepy neighbors. very Disney channel-esque but whatever. fast forward to that "purge" thing, and there's some alarm and the TV screens all go blue and they're like "this is not a test," blah, blah.
the movie started off taking itself too seriously, fast forward to the middle and it's more. the acting will make you want to turn it off but don't because the ending is different.
hidden message throughout. has to do with humanity.
for just entertainment, skip it. if you want something a little more (hidden in a crapfest), watch it.
La misma luna (2007)
cute movie
it's nice and all, but a lot of things were sorta cheesy. there was one scene where the "moon" (which is pretty significant considering it's in the title of the movie) looked like some poster covering the window. then before *spoiler alert* the grandma died, the boy had been crying because he missed his mom. apparently his last name is Reyes, so she tells him "don't cry. we are Reyes, and Reyes are strong." i'm not sure if any of this is even an accurate representation of like how Mexicans really talk to their grandchildren, but cringey things like this sorta take away from the whole viewing experience. i mean, it didn't really look like she was consoling him, she was just kinda telling him to stop crying because he had a certain last name. i'll admit i'm being petty on that part, but there was a scene where he was panting like crazy and he kept looking out of a peephole while they were trying to cross the border and he was locked away, and the cop just ignored him. and how did Carlitos exit the car? he just kinda popped out of nowhere into some place and expected to buy a ticket. and why were America Ferrera and her boy toy okay with letting some kid die in the extreme heat of the car? and lettuce not forget how a 9 year old kid could persuade a restaurant manager in under 2 minutes to hire 2 people. this wouldn't happen. and somehow in those 2 minutes, he *alone* had also persuaded the manager to lend them a place to stay. wtf ever that's just dumb and lazy writing. not to mention whoever played that manager thing was the *worst* actor in this movie.
Edit: I'm watching this in class so I saw it piece by piece and let me say how p'd off I am that Carlitos and that one dude hung out a lot and he was even a father figure at some point and got arrested for dumb Carlitos but the credits roll after that stupid reunion and we never hear of him again? He got arrested and probably sent back to Mexico for that kid and that's it. That's really it? I did not like this movie. From 7 to a 5. It would have made up for it if the mom had been ran over or something and it changed the feeling entirely but nope it still remained a "sweet" movie without caring about *major* characters
