Carlito's Way: Rise to Power (2005)
A million times better than some people would have you believe
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the appalling average rating here on IMDb for this movie, someone somewhere must have given this movie a real low rating based on the trailer or on someone else's word rather than watching the whole thing themselves.
Anyone with an I.Q. over 50 would have seen this film what it is, an intelligent well acted prequel to a modern day classic, yes it doesn't have a blockbuster cast or a huge budget BUT it is still very well done and had me hooked for the full duration. All I want now is a follow-up which covers Carlito's years running drugs through the Caribbean and into Florida and I can die a happy man. For those that have seen Carlito's Way but are unsure about watching the prequel all I can say is that you will be losing out if you give this movie a miss based on a lack-lustre trailer. Watch and enjoy!
Constantine (2005)
Very underrated
Watched this movie tonight and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised, after reading reviews I was expecting another disaster like 'Hell Boy'. My word, how wrong some people can be, Constantine was an intelligent and thought provoking take on the whole heaven v's hell scenario. Sure Keanu Reeves is fairly wooden he still delivers one of his best performances so far and the work of a strong supporting cast helped drag this film to a very good standing in my opinion. My one criticism would be the length of the movie, at times it felt like more dialogue was needed but was cast aside in favour of more special effects scenes. That said though the cgi was very good, understated as all good cgi is, far too many movies are spoilt by overuse of glaringly obvious cgi work these days so it was nice to see a major movie that knew how far to push the envelope.
All in all this movie is well worth the entrance fee, don't be put off by the critics and a few poor reviews on IMDb, anything with Keanu Reeves in gets slammed regardless and it is mostly justified, however I can happily recommend Constantine as one of the best films at the cinema right now. If you don't catch this one on the big screen then make sure you grab the DVD on rental, then you will see that the critics aren't always right or fair.
