The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)
Sunday night viewing with eccentric characters
Really enjoyable Sunday night viewing. The film felt dreamy and this worked well with the narrator recounting the memories of his life whilst writing and showing us how life itself the sole source for writing. The whole thing had a bit of a Wes Anderson feel but this may have been because Tilda Swinton was in the film and the characters were very eccentric! Definitely give it a go!
The Luminaries (2020)
Satisfying and detailed mystery
A rewarding and detailed mystery in, what feels like, a fresh backdrop of the (beautiful) New Zealand gold rush. The plot, which many complain of being too convoluted and the scenes too dark, portrays the gritty underlying themes of opium addiction and murder. The story might unravel itself too slowly for some but does so to a satisfying conclusion nevertheless with undercurrents of the ethereal and supernatural along the way.
