Raunchy comedy gold
17 July 2022
It's vulgar, it's raunchy, it's "Movers Ultimate."

Had the opportunity to attend the Pittsburgh premiere and I had a great time watching this flick.

Great chemistry among the cast, laugh out loud moments throughout, and has that sweet spot of a runtime where it wasn't too short and wasn't too long.

Really impressed with this independent comedy!

Unrelenting terror done well
3 September 2017
"Annabelle: Creation" is an unreal improvement from the 2014 Annabelle film. It delivers near constant horror sequences throughout the film on top of a well done story that connects to the '14 film. So many Hollywood Horror films goes over the top with their jump scares and some may claim that other films are "constant" with their jump scares but I genuinely feel that 'Annabelle: Creation' does its jump scares cleverly and are very well-done.

Sitting at the top of my list within the Wan-iverse, "Annabelle: Creation" is my favorite installment and I highly recommend it.

Beautifully devastating
2 September 2017
Michael Wong delivers a short film that hits you right in the feels. With such a limited time to deliver a story so impactful as this one, it is truly quite marvelous. The emotion felt within the last five minutes of this short is heart-wrenching and is something that many people may connect with around the world.

In my opinion, I think this is a story that could be stretched to a feature film length and I would pay money to see it.

Production is what saves this film.
17 July 2017
How beautifully well done this film was is what saves the film from being rated any lower and also what feels like the right ending to such an immaculate story does a good bit of saving as well. But certain plot points within the film just are far too glaring for me to excuse them and praise this film as so many people have been doing. Again, this is a fine finishing touch on the trilogy, I just felt it could have been done way better and without such reckless unexcused moments and actions. Production wise: It is simply gorgeous and well made. Structure wise: far too scattered with questionable motives and actions. Overall, the "meh" of the trilogy.

Unique and different for the genre of horror
5 July 2017
Overall, 'A Cure for Wellness' is a fantastically done film from a multitude of different perspectives. The images portrayed, the cinematography, the performances, the overall eerie atmosphere created, among many different elements. Surely to be considered cult- classic status, the film, from my perspective, is a refreshing and extremely well-done horror film. While having a few petty plot-holes and an ending that in my opinion did not fit well for the type of product made for what is about 90% of the film, 'A Cure for Wellness' is a different type of horror that prides itself on the eerie atmosphere and off-the-wall elements it presents to its audience. These elements have the possibility to make them feel as uncomfortable and curious as the main character feels while inside the film. Highly worth the watch for the fans of horror and worth the watch for the audience that enjoys mysterious films that keep you wondering til the very end.

Just when you thought Age of Extinction was bad...
21 June 2017
'Transformers: The Last Knight' is a prime example of people mindlessly buying tickets to see this trainwreck and being "entertained" by the robot action and explosions. Age of Extinction was considered a "box office success" due to its overall international sales but by no means was it a good film. Maybe this time around people will look past the explosions and "cool scenes" and see what this film truly is because even the cool looking scenes did absolutely nothing for me. This film is a mess of absolute crap. The studio, the film, whoever, they continue to throw whatever they want at their audience regardless of how pointless or out of nowhere it is. Right when I thought that it could not get any worse than Age of Extinction, The Last Knight arrives. With a two hour and twenty-nine minute long run time that felt like four hours, as of June 25th, 2017, this is the worst film of 2017.

Super fun for all ages
20 June 2017
'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie' was an overall funny and entertaining experience. Not only is this a fun film for kids but it is fun for any age demographic. There are plenty jokes for the youngsters and plenty jokes for the adults and ultimately, it is fun for all ages. For a movie titled Captain Underpants, it is impressively done well from its humor, to its animation, as well as its production. To be completely honest, I hope this is the start of a fun series that has a plethora of possible sequels in its arsenal. Take your kids, take your partner, take your dog. 'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie' is a fun and mindless ride from start to finish.

Quite the tense slow-burn horror
14 June 2017
A24 continues to impress me each time with their films. As soon as one is even announced, whether I know its true intention or not, I want to see and (try to) understand it. I want to know the film's purpose. 'It Comes at Night' puts on a high tensity slow-burning horror show that keeps you on the edge of your seat with every spoken word and/or action that is taken. It is a film that shows human nature's most basic instinct; survival. However, here is yet another disclaimer; this is a slow-burn horror film. It is not 'The Conjuring', it is not a carbon copy of every Hollywood Horror film that spoon feeds jump scares like every PG-13 horror film does. It is a psychological slow-burn horror film. A24 delivers yet another Indie horror film that is a gem within the horror genre.

David Lynch is a beautiful mad-man.
5 June 2017
'Mulholland Drive' goes beyond the conventional film. Mystery thrillers typically challenge their viewers but this one takes it way farther. As one timeline seems to become clear, another one is presented and causes viewers to attempt to piece what they knew previously into what they are newly learning. Not only is it a whole new set of events, it is a constant barrage of twists and turns. With this said, not only is this already a challenging concept, the first story already is strange and confusing to start. Adding in a new series of events only throws its audience another curve-ball. The film challenges its audience from the very start and demands to be thought of well after the film ends. David Lynch created a challenging piece of film in the form of 'Mulholland Drive' and good luck trying to figure his madness out during the film or even after the viewing is over.

Wonder Woman (2017)

Finally!
2 June 2017
Finally, my eyes have seen a DC Extended Universe film that has truly blown me away. As I have stated in the past, I look at films from two different perspectives simultaneously as I watch them: One, from an entertainment perspective. Two, from a complete and whole film perspective, Oscar-worthy, if you will. While there is always a heavy debate about Oscars, no matter the opinion, 'Wonder Woman' entertained me from the very start to the very end. With an excellent blend of story, action, comedy, and so on, it truly has become one of my favorite superhero films. Gal Gadot hits a home-run playing WW. She owns this role and I truly hope there is a deep future for her in this role. The action thoroughly blew me away with the acceptance of some silly CG at times. I desperately hope Patty Jenkins will continue to have ties to the DC Universe because she led this film to greatness. As I sit and wonder where this ranks among comic book films; I can confidently say it sits among the top. Just under 'Logan' and resides among Marvel's best and clearly is the DC Extended Universe's best.

A strong outing for Amanda Stenberg.. Much better than a typical teen drama.
30 May 2017
'Everything, Everything' gives off every vibe of just another 'Fault in Our Stars' but impressively enough, it somehow does something just a little differently. Whether it was the clear chemistry and/or the fantastic acting ability given off by Amanda Stenberg, it ultimately results in a product that is pure and genuine that shows a young love as innocent and honest as it could be. Besides minor petty things, there is not much to complain about. Being a typical young adult drama, I can not give a stronger rating but all things considered, this is a glowing thumbs up for 'Everything, Everything'.

The Circle (I) (2017)

High potential, disappointing result
28 April 2017
'The Circle' is a film that tries to be more intelligent than it actually is. While possessing a quality message and material to potentially make a gripping and mysterious film, it falls short with hollow and forgetful characters/performances, wildly off-the-wall concepts, and many plot holes and questions that can be formed with no answer to them. While I have no knowledge of the novel, I would imagine it being significantly better than this film-adaptation. A nod for the message 'The Circle' intends to convey but a disappointed walk-out by the time the credits roll.

Yoga Hosers (2016)
4/10
It was definitely... something
25 April 2017
After viewing this film, to expand on my previous comment of "does Kevin Smith even care?", it truly seems like Kevin Smith is throwing hands with the critics and he is going to continue to make what he wants, whether it is necessarily "good or bad" in the eyes of the public. His dialogue in this film, specifically delivered by Ralph Garman playing villain Andonicus Arcane, refers to "critics of art" saying terrible things about his work. Which can be seen as a parallel to how critics have received Smith's most recent films... Sorry Kevin, I am mostly going to agree with them on this. 'Yoga Hosers' was not entirely a horrible film but it was no where near a good one. Kudos to Kevin's slam at critics though.

'Yoga Hosers' had plenty going well for it like its pop-culture references and the ever-standard crude humor. Early on in the film, it seemed to be on the right track to be a cult-classic stud but that steam would quickly run out as the introduction of the Bratzis came to fruition, and that only took about ten minutes or so. I like to think I have a good tolerance for ridiculousness but 'Yoga Hosers' became a bit too much with its concepts and especially effects. Low budget or not, I can only handle so much cringe-worthy moments and be able find myself entertained.

However, I can not say 'Yoga Hosers' is a complete abomination and I have not hinted at that in the least bit. Again, Kevin Smith will always have hidden innuendos to his films and I always have found an appreciation of this. Also, I think Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith (Playing the leads Colleen Collette and Colleen McKenzie) were quite charismatic and engaging in their roles. If anything, this film was a presentation of their talents no matter the platform they were given. I hope to see the two young ladies excel in Hollywood in the nearby future. Lastly, as most would know, Kevin Smith has a trademark style of delivering his comedy. I found it hit-and-miss for me but I can not deny that he made me laugh out loud a couple of times throughout my viewing of the film.

Another outrageous outing by the Fast crew
15 April 2017
I've over being excited for these films and expecting to be blown away or at least thoroughly enjoying the film in its entirety. It has gone to a point where its juvenile antics and over-the-top story lines are for pure entertainment and nothing else.

With that being said, as expected, "The Fate of the Furious" delivers more outrageous story lines, mega unrealistic sequences like old school taxis and soccer mom vans being hijacked through hacked computer systems, and a street racing team that somehow has the skills and capabilities to combat government trained personnel and international crime syndicates.

Granted, the film does what it intends to do and I can't deny it wasn't entertaining. I caught myself laughing at multiple points of the film. Especially with the likes of The Rock, Ludicrous, and Tyrese Gibson.

With outrageous action scenes, the standard crazy car stunts, and personalities most people love; "The Fate of the Furious" is sure to do well in the box office regardless of how extreme this series has gotten from the early days.

Another home-run for Disney's live-action re-imagining
4 April 2017
Disney continues to knock home-runs out of the park with their plan of re-imagining their animated classics and this time they have done so again with "Beauty and the Beast".

Headed by the beauty herself, Emma Watson, the film has a star-studded cast of rising stars and legends of Hollywood. The entire cast does such a phenomenal job at each of their own respective characters. Making the audience fall in love with virtually every character on screen. Personally, I had a strong liking for Belle (Emma Watson), Lumière (Ewan McGregor), and LeFou (Josh Gad).

Visually, the film is beautiful and eye-popping. From the visuals of the live environment surrounding the castle or village to the animation involved in the music numbers. Everything was quite beautiful.

My only gripe with any form of animation was with Beast. There has been criticism about his animation which I can half agree with. In some scenes, he was great and his animation wasn't distracting but in other scenes, his movement was choppy and evidently off.

Ultimately, "Beauty and the Beast" was a great live-action film. Disney continues to work its magic re-imagining their classics and continues to work their fool-proof formula.

The Hours (2002)
8/10
Deeply moving and powerfully performed
28 March 2017
'The Hours' is a story concerning subject matter that deserves to be known. It may not be something that many people experience firsthand or even secondhand but it is a very real story that happens among many people, whether light or severe.

The performances by this entire cast were spot on. There was not one performance I did not enjoy whether it came from main characters or supporting. I incredibly enjoyed the three powerhouse leading ladies in Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore but beyond those three, Ed Harris as Richard Brown and Jack Rovello as Richie were by far my favorites.

This film is definitely worth the watch but be sure to find something pleasant to watch afterward!

Power Rangers (2017)
7/10
Good fun entertainment, flaws can not be unseen though.
25 March 2017
I was hyped to see this movie. My childhood was going to be relived with this new take on the original series and to be honest, I was pretty satisfied with what I saw by the time the movie came to an end. Characters I loved in new form, a dope new style of armor (which has been hotly debated but how is that a turning point for a movie being bad or not? P*** off), and quite an entertaining bit of material throughout the film in regards to comedy and action. So no doubt, 'Power Rangers' was an entertaining film from my perspective. However, everything was not all rainbows and butterflies. The story progression was sporadic throughout the film. I felt as if the film had a hard time balancing the whole serious tone and the imminent Earth's destruction between the OhEmGee teen drama that was supposed to instill a deep emotional heart-string pluck (although I did feel for Zack (Ludi Lin) the Black Ranger because I'm a mommas boy). Let us also not forget the music video film constantly blaring out mainstream tunes at inopportune moments. Sorry, the last thing I want to listen to is Kanye West's "Power" while an intense battle scene is going on.

So beyond all that and other personal gripes I had with the film, I do want to bring focus to the characters. I had no previous knowledge of any of the actors and actresses besides Becky G (Trini/Yellow Ranger) being a musician and me loving RJ Cyler (Billy/Blue Ranger) in the film 'Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl'. RJ Cyler easily stole the show. From the moment he entered the screen, I loved every moment of his screen time... Discount Zac Efron aka Dacre Montgomery (Jason/Red Ranger) was a solid player in the film. I was not entirely thrilled with his role of the leader but I hope to see better from him with the expected coming sequels... Naomi Scott and Ludi Lin (Kimberly/Pink Ranger and Zack/Yellow Ranger) were average for me. I was not a fan of Kimberly's story and Zack was a bit of annoyance but they were nothing perspective altering for me... Lastly, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa was actually impressive for me. I enjoyed her quirky persona and was actually shocked by the way they presented her at times through almost a horror type way. Very cool for me... Again, overall, solid cast choice and performance for an intro film.

Passengers (I) (2016)
8/10
Another win for recent films within the Sci-Fi genre
21 March 2017
I happened to miss this film when it had its theatrical run in theaters but a friend recently brought my attention to it and I am happy he did.

"Passengers" is fueled with impressive performances given the small cast consisting primarily of Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Sheen, and Lawrence Fishburne. While Pratt and Lawrence, once again, presented their strong range of skill within their acting expertise, Michael Sheen was a standout and very memorable to me. Regardless, everyone did such a strong job and kept me very immersed in an ever- changing complex story of survival given it was a small cast.

As I said previously, the story, although seeming like a simple ABS story, changes frequently and throws a wide range of emotions at you throughout its entire run time. Every emotion from positive to negative, "Passengers" is a film to remember.

Definitely worth a watch.

The Invitation (I) (2015)
7/10
A hidden gem within the horrid land of Netflix horror movies
12 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"The Invitation" definitely did a lot of things well versus the typical horror movie on Netflix or even just within the genre itself comparing to "Hollywood" horror movies released in theaters.

I was especially fond of the mystery that lasted throughout the entire film. It was honestly scene after scene where I found myself wondering wtf was going on. On top of the mystery feel of the film, I especially appreciate films that make it seem like the "good guy" may not actually be the good guy. A film that can do that well often splits its audience in two until the reveal finally hits if a certain person or party is the villain of a film.

However, although I enjoyed the film, I was a bit bothered by some plot points and lack of common sense (that we all too often witness in these kinds of horror/thrillers). Certain points were clearly missed in regards to being explained and some were simply just holes, never to be visited again. Another thing I was not fond of what the characters beyond the three main ones. Everyone else was pointless and simply a part of the herd to slaughter. No development, no point, just meatshields for the movie.

But otherwise, definitely not a terrible flick. I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated.

A superb spark to the Monsterverse
10 March 2017
"Kong: Skull Island" is great entertaining fun. The action is packed on and you can see that the backlash against the 2014 "Godzilla" was heard in regards to the minimal exposure to the monster and the lack of action until the very end. Kong is featured plenty in this film and the action, both human and monster, is constant and adrenaline inducing.

All performers did great. To be honest, I didn't feel anyone was a standout performance but they were all notable and entertaining. If I could choose any standouts it would be John C. Reilly, Sam Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston, but again, they were nothing mind-blowing. All decent performances all-around.

Lastly, the images produced by this film were stunning. I found myself sitting in my seat mouthing "wow" on multiple occasions with what I was seeing unfold on screen. Most images of Kong were superb and the action sequences were incredible to watch. There was a terrifying beauty to every scene.

Big recommendation here purely for how entertaining this action film was.

Hard Candy (2005)
8/10
An uncomfortably great film
1 March 2017
Taking on this request by my friend, Mike, I honestly had no idea what to expect from this film besides what I saw in the trailer and the small teases he fed me about the film. I remember we got on to the topic of 'Hard Candy' as we were talking about Patrick Wilson in 'The Conjuring' series. That conversation led to Patrick's acting and Mike making his claim that Patrick's performance in this is exceptional. Well, he is not wrong. Alongside of Patrick Wilson, Ellen Page does a fantastic job on her own as well. The two present themselves in equally creepy and mysterious characters that you may grow to despise or feel for. Two performances that are simply brilliant in regards to how the story plays out... Now speaking of story, my oh my did I not expect this. With no spoilers, all I can say is at the start, some may not expect the story to play out in the way it does but regardless of expecting or not, it is phenomenally done and quite a gripping story to get its viewers sunk into the film. Overall, as creative and brilliant as this film plays out to be, it was so uncomfortable for me to watch at times and that saying so in the best way possible. Thrillers or even horror films that can enact a sense of discomfort in its viewers and/or me is a film I like to see and enjoy...as odd as that sounds.

'Hard Candy' is a great film given the small cast and limited setting. Patrick and Ellen can keep you invested in this film's entirety through uncomfortable curiosity. This is another Oberrated requested review that passes the test. Definitely a recommendation here.

Get Out (I) (2017)
9/10
Simply excellent, Jordan Peele is something special.
25 February 2017
"...I take devilish glee in making people uncomfortable" - Jordan Peele

Sir, you succeed. No room for sugar coating, as Jordan Peele did not do so in the slightest in 'Get Out'. This film may be one of my favorite films in the past decade and maybe ever. Again, one of my favorites, not all time favorite, calm down. This film was so brilliantly done from performance, to story, to the meaning behind it all, to the twists, just everything. I think what I truly loved about all of this is the originality behind it all. Jordan Peele wrote this and directed this. As it may have a few nods to past films (which, c'mon, what film does not take or at least nod to a past film?), it ultimately left me so satisfied to witness such a creative horror/thriller... Another thing this film did so brilliantly was keeping the audience curious until the very end. Although some things could be predicted, I personally still sat there thinking "what in the f*$# is going on, what are these people doing?". It is almost as if Jordan took his dark comedic skits from "Key & Peele" and eliminated the comedy and let the dark vibe of it run wild... Lastly, the performances. Applause all around to everyone involved. I hope to see some of these actors and actresses in more projects in the future. I received a very strong Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin in 'Gotham') vibe out of Caleb Landry Jones and could foresee him taking on more villainous roles in the future. Betty Gabriel has been a favorite of mine with her involvement in "The Purge" films and seeing her involvement and performance in this film just reinforced that favoritism ten-fold. Daniel Kaluuya is a star-in-the-making, absolutely loved him in his main role. Last but not least, LilRel Howery stole the show. No matter how dark 'Get Out' got, LilRel's scenes are when the film takes a breath in the form of laugh-out-loud comedy. Brilliant performances all around.

I had majorly high expectations for this film since I first saw a trailer for it and impressively they were exceeded. A horror flick from the mind of Jordan Peele. See this, folks, it is a good one.

Hell or High Water (II) (2016)
8/10
Performances that blew away what seems to be a dumb plot
22 February 2017
'Hell or High Water' was an interesting view for me. Simply because I have heard reviews all over the board for this film. Some saying that this is the greatest film of 2016 and one of the best for modern westerns. I heard some say it was an alright film, nothing great nothing terrible. I also heard some say that is was horrible, boring, pointless, dumb, etc. You name it, someone said it. Now, with a Best Picture nomination, 'Hell or High Water' had to do something right to get that credential. Well, Oberrated is here to breakdown all of your confusion. Just kidding, but I am breaking this down my way... 'Hell or High Water' was great. As far as performance, story-telling, and fantastic memorable moments, it was a well-done and great film. I can not say one person had a bad performance here, not Ben Foster, Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges, Gil Birmingham, not one. Even down to Margaret Bowman who played the T-Bone waitress! This was a performance heavy film that transcended a dumb story-line when written on paper into an Oscar contender. (and I only say this because when I typed that summary section I realized, this is a dumb as hell story when typed out, just IMO.)... Now I can not sit here and say it is an all-time great and side with some friends who have said this was a 2016 best, maybe a top ten but not best. But I also can not say that this was a worst, and to those who have said it was a worst and was boring, they probably are the casuals who want a shoot'em'up film. But hey, everyone has their tastes, some just are simpler than others.

So that is it. 'Hell or High Water' has tremendous re-watch value. It has incredibly memorable moments that I loved and simply fantastic performances that made this film what it is. Now, I can not say this has a chance at Best Picture, but that does not count it out as a great film. Highly recommended!

An exceptionally performed film. Casual movie-goers won't leave happy.
14 February 2017
Rightfully so, I am going to start this off with 'Manchester by the Sea' was one depressing as hell film. Fantastically delivered and performed but my lord, such a sad and tragic story. That is truly what fuels this film though, the performances of such tragically defeated characters just barely making it by but still continue to move forward with life, continuously taking punches, barring setback after setback, and still.moving.forward. Another thing I truly loved about this film was how honest and real it felt. There was nothing Hollywood about this film. It felt like real people with a tragic and believable pasts, experiencing life in an unfortunate series of events. Overall, this may be the most honest film among the Best Picture contenders, in my opinion... To reflect back, I wanted to bring focus to one scene in particular. There is a five minute exchange between Affleck's character and Williams' character, and to me, this scene was the absolute icing on the cake when it came to the grief and despair that both characters carry throughout the entirety of the film. This scene made the movie for me. I had chills running through my body and I felt what they were feeling. A truly moving and memorable moment that solidified how excellent of a performance these two had in 'Manchester by the Sea'.

So, there you have it. Boiled down, 'Manchester by the Sea' is a powerfully performed, honest, and true film. Nothing happy about it, no giddy and joyous feelings and if there are, it is only for a moment or two. Some humor is thrown in but it is as dry as the characters that are delivering them, which matches the personalities perfectly. A major recommendation from Oberrated but be cautious, you may need to give Pharrell's "Happy" a few plays after viewing this one.

Pulse-pounding non-stop action. Exactly what I wanted.
11 February 2017
I have heard many criticisms on 'John Wick: Chapter 2' in the time that it has been out. Most very positive, very few negative. Some criticism I heard was that this is the best action sequel that was seen in all time, that the action in this is unrivaled, or that this is some of the smartest gun-play presented in an action film, ever. Well that was other people, forget them, what about Oberrated? 'John Wick: Chapter 2' brought insane energy and picked up exactly where it left off from the first one. High-octane action, hilariously and purposefully short dialogue, and a plot that is simply fueled off of revenge and survival... The highlight of this film is without a doubt the action choreography that lasts almost quite literally, the entire duration of the film. My friend said himself and put quite well, "Normally I sit and wait for action scenes to begin but with this, I am sitting here waiting for a dialogue piece to begin." Yes my friends, there is that much action in this movie and I loved every moment of it... Honestly, there was very little I found a problem with in this film for the sheer fact I knew what I was getting into. It was an entertaining piece of action to be remembered just like the first one.

There is nothing much else to say about it. This is a pulse-pounding action film for the ages. I am excited to see how this John Wick series is revered in the future but as for now, check this one out if you love non-stop violent action.
