Razzle Dazzle: A Journey Into Dance (2007)
Full of Razzle, Not Much Dazzle
I was eager to see this new Australian film, as I am for all Aussie films, as I love just about everything that the industry comes up with. I have to say though, I was disappointed with the movie on the whole and found it very tedious and at times wanted to leave the cinema.
I found myself shifting around in my seat, spacing in and out every now and then and pretty much wanting to leave.
Now, that's not to say I didn't find parts of the movie bearable - witty and funny bits were splashed about everywhere. When it came to piecing the whole movie together, however, it just fell flat.
Kerry Armstrong is the exception. I found myself sitting up in my seat and smiling every time she came on screen because each scene she was in was hilarious and bright. Jane Hall also gave a very good performance. The five-second appearance by one of my favourite actresses Rachel Gordon was a little more than a blink-and-you'd-miss-it scene which was disappointing because she deserves so much more than what she is given.
All in all, Razzle Dazzle gave it a fair go but with the majority of the adult audience it didn't match the hype it received before the movie came out. Young kids would enjoy it for the singing and dancing routines, and I'm sure many adults could find something they liked about it as well.
I couldn't help but picture Chris Lilley (King of the Australian Mockumentary) playing Mr Jonathon and wondering if he might have been just the thing to spruce it up a bit.
Second Chance (2005)
Good but left you wondering...
"Second Chance" was hard to get into at first, but then as it progressed it was easier to connect with the characters and gain a sense of progression. The story itself lacked anything significant but was a pleasant telemovie, well directed and well casted. Rhys Muldoon and Tara Morice being the two that stood out with the rest of the cast either too overacted or their characters too unstructured.
The movie didn't have much romance, comedy or drama...all the things one normally looks for in a movie. That being said, it still told a story of the main character Alec - a hotshot lawyer forced to move to the country town of Broome and take up a job there. It then tells of Alec and his connection between various people and in turn their relationships with one another.
All in all this telemovie isn't one of Australia's finest, but had numerous moments that stood out and a number of actors and actresses that deserve commendations.
One line summary -- Good but left you wondering what it was about and left you wanting more explained!
Rove Live (2000)
Rove kicks Conan, Jay and Lettermans butt when it comes to funny
What is wrong with some people?? Seriously, why are so many people here comparing Rove to Jay Leno, Conan OBrien and David Letterman?? OK..these three are late night chat-show hosts, but a) their shows and their segments are not funny AT ALL..b) they are American and c)They are lame and the people that laugh at their jokes need to get a life! Oh my god..Rove is sooo copying..he has a monologue at the start..and has a "funny photo" segment and roving interviews with the public.. Um OK..that doesn't mean he "stole" from any of the American chat show hosts! The ones overseas seem so repetitive and boring each time, but Rove at least is original and hilarious! Rove is the best thing thats on television at the moment..amidst the crap reality shows, the American canned-laughter garbage and celebrity gossip shows that are around..Every week his show has awesome celebrities from both overseas and the cream of the crop of Aussie TV. It guarantees laughs all the time..whether its through the various segments like the fake interviews with Pete (loved the pope and sylvester stallone!!), the spontaneous things he comes out with during interviews or when he's just amusing himself! Rove is an awesome show, he deserves all the praise (and the logies) he gets and I hope he stays on our screens for a LONG time! In the meantime, stop comparing him to Conan, Jay and Letterman; stop scrutinizing the parts of the show apparently "stolen" from other shows - AND START ACTUALLY WATCHING THE SHOW - I guarantee you will enjoy it!!
