The Resident (2018–2023)

Always/Sometimes

I don't know why or how I missed this show when it was active, so I am catching up and almost through Season 3. All of the actors do a great job and their characters are developed and unique enough that they don't all blend together.

I have finally decided what it is that the characters do well and don't do well. I love the interaction between Dr. Austin and Okafor - Theo is all grown up and brings an edge to the part as well as growing into a more compassionate peer and friend. Okafor is beautifully acted - I have enjoyed watching her sense of humor and comaderie emerge. Dr. Bell was really one of the docs not to be trusted but has slowly become much more dependably honest and forthcoming.

The weakest characters to me are Dr. Hawkins and Nurse Nic. They stand alone very well but as a couple there seems to be absolutely no chemistry between them. There is no magic spark, and the romantic scenes are offputting because of it.

I enjoyed Corbin Benson as Nic's father and it was nice to see him again.

So, overall, I like the medical portion better than the character portion. Some of the story lines are a bit cliche but then they'd have to be, I guess. There are only so many ways to have plots based on illness or emergencies. And, some of the story lines are just too long to involve a whole season.

I also think watching too many episodes via streaming is the problem. This show is probably better viewed with at least a few days apart.

The First Lady: Rift (2022)

Oh, Viola
14 June 2022
I am really disappointed in Viola's portrayal of Michelle Obama. A dynamic and vibrant First Lady is being portrayed as a sourpuss and a very belligerent woman. I'd skip over her parts but it's like a train wreck, I just have to watch to see how bad it's going to be. This episode was especially notable in the lip-pursing department - just awful and comical at the same time. I just don' t understand how an Oscar winner and normally a terrific actress can make such a mess of this role. I'm almost embarrassed for her.

Anderson and Pfeiffer are excellent and making their First Ladies very interesting. I can't say I've learned anything new about the women but that's the writing not the actors.

As for the men, the only one worth singling out is Sutherland who is going a great job of showing the dynamic personality of FDR as well as he and Eleanor's relationship.

Ugh
7 May 2022
No characters that I cared about.

No sun, just dreariness.

Mush-mouthed dialog.

Sad use of good actors.

Pointless gory violence at times. Enough is enough.

Too long.

Should I just say that the 4 of us who went to see this were sadly disappointed? That we felt we should have just walked out and spent our valuable time in another way?

This movie needed a character, at least one, that made us care about them in one way or another. Didn't get that, at all!

Save yourself time and money and see something else.

Excellent!

If you enjoyed "Broadcast News" of many years ago, this show reminds me of it. And, that's a good thing! Torv and Reid have great chemistry and the other supporting actors are all enjoyable. I laughed out loud a couple of times but it also brings the drama. Only watched the first episode but am looking forward to the remaining ones. Check it out!

Oh my, this was bad.
9 March 2015
I watched this late at night and I was surprised I didn't fall asleep. But you know how sometimes a movie is so bad you just have to keep watching it? That would be this movie. Wooden acting by all the actors involved. Bad plot, with none of the relationships worth paying any attention to. Hyenas showing up at the oddest, yet most convenient, times. Hmmm, and they are in Africa and unprotected from the elements and the only animal that they ever run into is a hyena? OK, one snake. And I hate snakes, but that wasn't even frightening. Totally unreal.

Did this even show in the theaters? I can't imagine it lasting more than a week before word got out how awful it was. Bah.
