The Brothers Bloom (2008)
Almost a Classic
This is one of the most original films I've ever seen. The wit, the humor, the style all contribute to this lasting impression. Rachel Weisz character is to die for and Brody is as charming as ever. However, to some viewers, this film may just seem silly and dumb, but give it a chance, lose yourself in the picture and you'll have a lot of fun. But, what separates it from being just one step away from serious greatness is when it gets all iffy in the end. I don't want to completely spoil it, but the concept of whether or not a con is really taking place, or who's conning who ruined it for me. It was a nice concept at first, but when it is overused it loses its power. Still, so clever, so much laugher. Highly Recommend.
Adult World (2013)
Cutie Patootie
This was just an adorable little independent film. Cusack gives his best Cusack-esque performance. Emma Roberts is also enchanting. Is the film perfect, or near? Not really, but there are some nice, actually very funny scenes sprinkled throughout. The idea is unique one. While is structure has been done, the coming of age straight out of college story, and also seems to be hot right now in most youth culture films. I believe that with some quirky, interesting scenes, the picture is very entertaining and very funny. I always encourage Emma Roberts to keep working because she really does have some talent and just needs to break out of the teen star typecast. Overall I enjoyed it and thought it was great for what it was.
12 Monkeys (1995)
A thought-provoker
I really, really enjoyed twelve monkeys. Actually more than Brazil, even though Brazil is held higher and consider the better film, or at least more important. I just loved the whole madness of it, and the question of madness and who's sane and who isn't. I was really enthralled by that entire concept. I also loved he inevitable approach to the future, that there really is nothing we can do. I found that interesting. The set design, because this is Gilliam we're talking about, was also very, very beautiful, descriptive, gritty, and raw. I don't want to get into the details of the plot but all i can say is that it has its twists. Definitely one of GIlliam's best and one of the most entrapping films I've seen in quite some time.
Awakened (2013)
An Empowering Film
Compared to Cinema's past, Women definitely have a much stronger and more serious presence in movies today. But it isn't completely equal from men and women yet. That's why films like this are important. Me, as a woman, definitely felt very emotionally inspired by this picture. To, for a change, not picture the female protagonist as some helpless ditsy girl was truly refreshing. The higher message is what really attracted me to this movie. But that still does not get rid of the fact that the rest of the cast, besides Julianne Michelle's outstanding performance, were really fantastic too. Well written and thoughtful, this film I think is great to augment hope for women everywhere
Brazil (1985)
A valuable experience
Despite many negative reviews, even Ebert didn't like it too much at the time, I think this is the type of film that really stands the test of time. I feel that, while pleasant the story, the message is so much higher than just a dystopian warning. beuaraucratic oppression is staring you right in the face during the entire picture. You cannot ignore it. The atmosphere, set, and costumes are much more important than the story itself. While well acted and thought out, Gilliam is really trying talk about what is wrong with society at the present, and predict what will happen at this rate. It can be compared to 1984, but I believe that any story can be transcribed to film, but that does not mean that they are the same entities, these are two person's views and ideas. Was Gilliam influences by 1984? Possibly, but that isn't the point, its the experience taken from this picture that is what's important. I really left the picture with the idea to treat every human as an individual as oppose to a number like the film. What a lovely experience
