The Bad Nun (2018)
It's like it was made specifically for Mystery Science Theater 3000
It's pretty bad. Bad writing, mid acting, absent story, pitiful continuity (door is locked with keys in it, then unlocked with no keys, then locked with keys in it again?). Shovelware of movies. Mystery Science Theater 3000 might be able to make it entertaining, but that's a tall order. Like other reviewers said it feels like a project for an undergrad film class, and one that would get a B- since it seems to only have a basic grasp of horror film elements.
Characters are written by someone who has never interacted with or talked to a human being. Effects are laughable. Gratuitous drone shots that reminded me of the first time I flew a drone and thought I was a film maker.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Historically Dense and Very Rewarding
A very well executed historical piece. It seems like every part worked: the writing, pacing, soundtrack, acting, visuals, everything. It's a very dense 3 hour movie that stays true to the history and source material. While you can probably enjoy the movie without knowing much history of the subject, it's very rewarding if you learn some background on the Manhattan Project, Los Alamos, Oppenheimer, and Strauss as there isn't much handholding done by Nolan.
The tension building was excellent and the pacing was great, considering it made an hour of government bueracracy actually engaging.
The practical effects used worked well to give us insight into Oppenheimer's brewing internal conflict and sense of regret. And all the actors present their roles well, seeing as all of those people were complex historical characters.
Lastly Matt Damon brings his own charm to his portrayal of Groves and does not disappoint.
This is definitely one of the best movies I've seen and is a must watch for scientists, engineers, and world war 2 history enthusiasts.
Barbie (2023)
Fun but occasionally confused with itself.
I'll start with the issues, because overall this movie was enjoyable if you don't take it too seriously.
The majority of the movie is a lighthearted comedy. The biggest tool a comedy has to use for conveying societal criticisms is satire. The beauty of satire is that you can make some really good points. When the movie used satire to make it's points it was great. But the 5% of the time that it forgot about the comedy altogether and tried to take itself too seriously (I'm not saying the subject itself matter wasn't serious) conflicted with it's own tone. You can make all the points you want to make with a biting satire without stomping on your own tone.
The ending for Barbie was felt misguided. Without spoiling it, there's a point between when the final conflict is resolved and the very last scene of the movie where barbie experiences something. It looks like the scene is supposed to be deep and insightful, but it honestly felt like the writers got to that point in the movie and didn't know how to end it, so they just kinda piled on some abstract feelings and vague phrases for a transition. Sort of like a high schooler writing an essay and not knowing how to write a concluding paragraph.
The middle school girl character is a 1 dimensional character, but writing young children characters seems to be a challenge for Hollywood so you can't blame them too much. And lastly the whole car chase scene was a blatant Chevy ad to the point that it was almost funny itself.
Now the good:
The visuals and characters were all done really well, and not just Robbie and Reynolds but the rest of the cast. The movie itself was really entertaining and worth a watch.
Neo Yokio (2017)
Enjoyable but polarizing
I unironically enjoyed it when it came out. And I was right there on the internet mocking Jaden Smith with his iam14andthisisdeep Twitter posts. The show is actually enjoyable though if you don't take it seriously (which I believe Jaden didn't). Now, I'm saying it's enjoyable to watch, not that it's ground breaking or technically impressive. But it's a fun parody with a nice aesthetic and vibe, and personally I was never into anime so the whole unrealistic story line that makes no sense actually seems pretty on par with my understanding of this style of anime. My only problem with this show is that they stopped making it.
Obviously this show has been very polarizing if you've read the reviews here. People either love it or hate it. Personally I think it has great potential for a cult following if they'd give it a try. I'm still holding out hope that one day Jaden and the rest of the creators and VAs will come back and finish it.
Out There (2013)
Pretty niche and polarizing
Apparently you either enjoy this show or hate it. I personally enjoyed it, but I like my humor to be on the dryer, bleaker side. Although idk if I would like this show as much without Roiland in it. Roiland's character very much has that Roilandesque feel to it. I'd watch more of it if they made more.
