The Rental (2020)
Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this thriller, and always appreciate a bit of dark humour thrown into tense movies like this.
I think overall review rating may be low due to how the film ends: the film builds really well, and everything that happens is relatable, but it feels like the writer/director needed to somehow bring the film to a close and tie all the threads together. I don't think the last ten minutes were necessary - you'll still have a complaining audience, but it's better to leave viewers guessing than to leave them with an unsatisfying end.
This could easily have been the beginning of a franchise.
The Hunt (2020)
Clever!
Excellent film showing the stupidity of stereotyping and self-righteousness.
Watchmen: It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice (2019)
Boring and disjointed
I got bored after 40 minutes - by then I was no closer to understanding how the opening scene relates to anything that occurs 98 years later. And, as you've probably gathered from other reviews, the Race Card is used to the extreme. The early traffic stop scene is just sickening, and tries to "role reverse" in order to show current injustices - yet, it causes viewers to sympathise with the "wrong" person!
Trying to tackle bigoted views by displaying one-dimensional narrow right/wrong view of the world isn't going to change anything: those that hate injustice will learn nothing from this, and those who still choose to lump whole sections of society as one homogeneous group are not going to learn anything.
This sort of show fits perfectly into the echo chamber world of twitter and facebook, where a desire to understand why others have different views is never explored and, as such, will never be deliberated.
The beauty of the original watchmen comics was the exploration of universal right - can any nation claim to be the saviour of all others? Can any person be trusted to be utterly selfless and immune from mistakes?
There is no depth here. Watch "The Boys" if you want some depth. Re-read the original comics if you want something to think about.
