Grandma's House (2016)
Engaging movie
It's a beautiful Christian movie. The grandmother (Loretta Devine) in this movie is tough, but filled with compassion and wisdom. She probably had enough experience to learn to protect her kids and grandkids from the dangers of this world.
Kimberly (Coco Jones) was a good MC in the movie. But she wasn't really a main character. More like the side character since her grandma's the star of the show.
The other characters were cool too. Maryland was one of them that stood out to me for some reason. She was mean at the beginning, but became more tolerable at the end. Overall, she's a likable enough character.
I'd recommend it to families with kids 12 and up. This movie tackles topics such as substance abuse, robbery, murder, sex and so on. Viewer discretion is advised!
Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets (2023)
My Overall Thoughts
So, the first time I heard about this show was on Instagram. I decided to check it out this week and was horrified for the victims in this documentary. They experienced so much abuse from the IBLP. Bill Gothard and the Duggar parents need to be held accountable for their actions. I'm glad that Josh, the oldest son, got what he deserved for molesting young women, especially a couple of his sisters. I'm glad this docuseries was made to expose the evils behind this cult. No one should have to grow up into that and I feel sorry for anyone that lost their childhood because of that.
Now on to the problem I had with this series. They bumped Christian influencers like Paul & Morgan, Girl Defined and many others with the Duggars. The people I just listed are not fundamentalists. Sure, from a nonbeliever's perspective, our views are radical and outlandish, but we just want to share the love of God and the sacrifice of Jesus. People like Paul and Morgan just want to live out their truth. And yet they still get hate from it. But Jesus did say that if you follow Him, the world's going to hate you just like it hated Him. And it does. People are calling Christianity a cult when in reality, it promotes freedom. Freedom from sin.
Like Morgan said in the documentary, yes "submit" is a scary word. When I saw that word in the Bible, I will be honest, it made me cringe. But it's not a misogynistic thing for the man to be the leader of the household. That's how God designed it. But that doesn't mean that a man should ever have a right to put his hands on his wife. Just like the Bible commands, the husband should LOVE his wife. And abusing your wife is not in any way, shape, or form, loving.
I believe that this docuseries had an agenda hidden there and I'm glad it's being called out by fellow believers. Other than that, the series did a great job exposing the evils of the IBLP cult.
P.O.V.: We Are the Radical Monarchs (2020)
Political indoctrination at its finest
I've never heard of this show until today. When I saw what this woman was teaching these girls, I was disgusted. She was talking to them about sex and other inappropriate things. I'm all for teaching kids about treating each other with respect, but putting a political agenda is different. Young students, no matter what grade level they're in, come to school to learn, not to be indoctrinated. Schools should be as neutral as possible. If students want to learn about sex, they can learn from their parents or wait until middle or high school. They should NOT be learning this in elementary school! They're too young. The modern education system is failing our kids right now! I'm glad i didn't learn all this trash when I was in school.
A Christmas Dance Reunion (2021)
I loved HSM, but
WARNING: I haven't watched the full movie yet!
I don't hate the movie. I liked the dancing in it, but the movie just seemed like your typical feel-good Christmas movie, which isn't a bad thing. One of my problems is how nice they make the characters. I'm only saying this because previously these two (Monique Coleman and Corbin Bleu) played the couple Taylor and Chad. The contrast is that Taylor and Chad had sass. Taylor always had snarky remarks and Chad always had witty ones. Nonetheless, they were good friends.
It was just kind of hard seeing the same actors play characters who were too nice and didn't seem to have a lot of personality or flaws. That's some of the things I would look for in a character. That's one of the reasons why I loved High School Musical so much. The characters had fun and distinctive personalities. I feel like Hallmark and Lifetime could do a bit more of that in their movies. I don't know why that would hurt, even though they like to keep their plots plain.
A Jazzman's Blues (2022)
Loved it!
I loved this movie! I saw it today with my family. At first I didn't want to see it because I wanted to focus on my own writing. And movies can distract me from that. But Tyler did a great job with the movie! He's made some pretty good movies, especially ones without Madea (who I love by the way). It was sad, yet admiring. I loved the two actors in this movie: the darker-skinned man and the lighter-skinned woman. I liked their chemistry, but some of my relatives say that the girl was selfish. I don't think she meant to be selfish, but her actions did seem that way. I did love her actress though. She's beautiful! She looks a bit too old to play a teenager. So does the other guy. All the teens look old here. They could pass off as twenty-something year-olds.
The movie was engaging and captivating, held most of my attention through it. Perry did a great job with this movie! 27 years in the making! Wow. It does have some plot holes and some things didn't make sense, but hey. It's not perfect. There's no such thing as a perfect movie, book, or any other kind of work. And there never will be. We're all imperfect humans. I don't think we can make perfect art with our imperfect hands. We can always try our best to make our work as great as possible. And Tyler did just that!
Monster (2018)
Good movie
Good movie as well as the book. However, I feel that the lead actor looks a bit too old in some angles for this role. There were some differences in names of the characters from the book. In the film, the redheaded lawyer was named Maureen, while her name in the book was Kathy (I think)? The lawyer against Steve was a female in the book while in the movie, it was a male. The book didn't add that Steve had siblings or a love life. But, in the movie, he did. At the very end of the book, instead of returning Steve's hug after he won the trial, his lawyer refused the hug and walked away. But in the movie, she offered him a handshake. I feel like the refusal of the hug offer has a more interesting twist. Personally, I'd prefer the book a little bit better because it goes more in depth to things. But I still enjoyed the movie. The atmosphere of it was great!
SpongeBob SquarePants: Atlantis SquarePantis (2007)
So overhated!
This is one of my favorite SpongeBob specials ever! I don't know why everyone hates it so much. I didn't think the songs and the singing was all that bad. In fact, I found them pretty entertaining. The animations were cool. I do agree that David Bowie, who played Your Royal Highness, should have done a singing part. Even though I'm not a fan of Bowie, it would have made sense that he sung a part. I also agree that they could have done more with this episode. Also, I didn't like the Patchy segment in this one. It was dragged on and boring. Other than all of that, the episode is awesome!
