Elle (2016)
Do not waste your time or money on Elle
I have had this on my watch list for about 10 days...Even with the ratings slowly declining it was the Trailer that captured my attention, and it being a foreign film too and, as of lately foreign films are catching up to Hollywood. Much better film quality, actors etc...I had seen A Street Cat Named Bob two nights ago and it was one of the best films I have seen in several months. That is a huge compliment as I watch one a day...But Elle, if it had stayed true to the trailer it could have been so much better. The story-line does not make any sense as it drifts off onto superfluous filming...The trailer and some of the high rating reviews talk of spine tingling surprises. It was easy to figure out who the mad man was. A good thriller will always keep you guessing, but this film, no guessing...But I stuck it out to the end and was disgusted with the end... So many ways this could have been one of the top new thrillers but bad writing ruined it...A travesty as the actors/Actresses were all very good. They all deserve a better script...I blame the writers simply put, they tried to put a new spin on a thriller and failed miserably..
Enemy (2013)
What a Tangled Web we weave....SPOILERS!!!
This film has too many fruitless clues, from the ring finger to the scar. It could mean anything from Deception and second chances, a Man leading a double life, to a mad man that killed his wife in a car accident and is in denial...I kept waiting for some clever writing. The acting was great!!! Excellent talent gone to waste on this one though. The only reason I watched it was because of the movie Prisoner. I was hoping for some more of the same fantastic writing and plot twist.
I got the feeling the main character lived alone from the start. Most of the talking between the character and his wife/girlfriend seemed more like he was talking to himself. Yet the writer gave off the impression some sinister plot or mind boggling event was about to take place. It never transpires. So one felt cheated at the end, and the funky 70's type credit format was a fail.
The spider was lame and like I said it could mean so many different things and was a terrible ending to an already boring movie that had about 30 minutes of good writing but the rest, well, it is a just a tangled web to deceive...He was his own worst enemy...Pretty simple in the end yet could have been a fantastic movie.
Seven Pounds (2008)
I was Shocked, Surprised, I Cried, laughed, Fell in Love, 7 Lbs Is Worth Every Ounce!!!
Will Smith delivers yet again in a film about a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and his crusade to right his wrongs in a way that will touch even the most hardened of hearts!!! Writer Grant Nieporte and Italian Director Gabriele Muccino come together and created a masterpiece that I highly recommend to purchase and keep in your movie collection as you will never grow tired of watching/feeling this film!!! I have the Highest Respects for Will Smith as he is not only a brilliant Actor but one can tell he has a genuine love for people and life which no doubt made him perfect for the character (IRS Agent Ben Thomas) he played in this film. You will find yourself feeling his pain and anger, the frustrations over his love for Emily, played by Rosario Dawson, who by the way was Fantastic as usual. I found myself falling in love with the fact their characters were falling in love. Woody Harrelson also stars in this Top Notch film. I find it very difficult to write this review without giving away key plot points...All I can say is, Watch it and when you do make sure you have nothing to interrupt you, take the phone off the hook, sit back and get ready to start trying to unravel the mysterious life and past of IRS Agent Ben Thomas...I thank you Will Smith for another Great Film!!!
Soul Men (2008)
Soul Men Has Plenty Of Laughter And Warmth For The Soul
What a Brilliant way for Bernie Mac to, ever so sadly, leave us to early...Samuel L Jackson and Bernie Mac team up for a hilarious duo on a road trip to pay final respects for their friend who was once the lead singer in their soul trio singing group and went solo leaving Bernie and Samuel in the dust to live off royalties the next 30 years. Its a heart ache to have lost Bernie at such a young age and at the height of his career. His talent shines in this movie brighter than ever before and to see Bernie and Samuel as a comedy team, how easily there would have been a Soul Men II as this movie will no doubt be a classic. Does contain plenty of harsh language and some sex scenes very brief nudity and some hilarious Viagra scenes. The movie wraps up at the famous Apollo theater with Isaac Hayes and Bernie on stage side by side. I give this film a 10 for having all the elements of a masterpiece film.
Cloverfield (2008)
Name That Storyline Please
This movie can't even be called a movie really. Whats the storyline??? Rob? His name is said over 200 times in the film , and in real life, would everyone still follow Rob after so many screw ups? I watched this with 3 of my teenage kids and at the end when it said Do not copy one said (Who would want to.) I seen many ideas from I am Legend, so many goofs, a couple, the Statue of Liberty's head is 5 times bigger in real life and when Hud gets chomped by a creature that just grabbed their chopper from 1,500 feet up, this creature reaches down and chomps him??? That would be like a man reaching down to chomp an ant. The ending sucked!!! I mean good grief I expected at the very least maybe a kid 10 years from now discovering the tape or a foreign Army team watching it to give the affect the monster was a war weapon... The first 30 minutes is dull, very little action in relation to applying common sense to how people would really react and the first scene of the Monster attack was a sickening copycat of 911 when the Towers dropped... As my daughter also pointed out, Hud sure kept a steady hand, I have seen footage in life death scenarios and the cameraman is always shaking... Very well deserving of a one rating, I have seen much better on You tube...
Grizzly Man (2005)
Grizzly Man: The Mysterious Timothy Treadwell
I was glued to the screen when we first watched Grizzly Man as I had never seen, nor heard of, a man walking and living among these magnificent beast! This is a documentary by both Werner Herzog and footage/Audio from/of Timothy Treadwell. Mr. Herzog clearly displays a mix of emotions from curious, shocked, respectful and the mystery about Timothy Treadwell that he was so eager to grasp, yet we will all never fully understand. Herzog masterfully incorporates 13 summers of filming Timothy did in The Great Bear Maze Of Alaska with interviews of Timothy's family and old friends, the Game Commission who was constantly at war with Treadwell and their remarks about Treadwell, are in a sense vengeful E.G. Getting the last word in and (I told you so.) Many people on the Internet poke fun at this man, but I invite those people to do as Timothy did,not only endure the extreme hardships of living in the wild but stand your ground against a full grown Male Grizzly that slams you with his head. Was it bravery, courage, stupidity? I don't think it was none. I believe it was having a knowledge of the Grizzly and knowing that if you show fear or run it is a natural response to attack or pursue. So perhaps Bravery does fit in there, and in retrospect I believe you will agree, when the film finishes up on the detailed events on the day of his death and that of his Girlfriend Amie Huguenard whom also showed courage beyond measure on that devastating morning. He carried no gun, not even mace, just his wits, a camera, and the knowledge that each encounter may be his last. In the end nothing could save him. As introduced in the beginning of the film, Timothy and his girlfriend are both killed in their thirteenth summer with the bears. A Rogue attacked them as they slept. You will see some fantastic bear footage like two male grizzlies in a fight for the alpha prestige. A Grizzly Adams character that becomes one with the animals around his camp and its all very real. The movie captures the spirit of a troubled man that sought a sense of belonging and self-worth by studying bears like no other man has ever done before. I have since watched it 5 times and every-time I do I love it more. Its a movie you will not regret watching. On a side note, It does include some crude language and a morbid talking coroner. I rate this Documentary a well deserved 10... -Dale Rhode
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Happiness Doesn't Elude Goodness
This film is great because it is so much like real life. If you have never been flat broke, a single parent, trying to work, and still hanging onto the goodness in ones heart, than maybe you can't relate to what this man went thru. I have been there and I know exactly what he went thru and the movie really brought out the human determination while facing hopeless situations. It reminded me of the many times I would tell myself (Don't Give Up!!!)I was impressed with the man who lived this movie and no matter how much Happiness was pursued his goodness never eluded him...Kudos to Will Smith for stepping into character, some of the best acting I have seen!!! I give this film a 10
You, Me and Dupree (2006)
A Genuine Feel Good Movie!!!
My teenage sons and I enjoyed this movie very much. I was somewhat concerned after reading the comments here on IMDb but being a big Owen Wilson fan I figured it can't be all that bad. I was glad I plugged it in as I would have missed out on a movie I now intend to buy. It focuses on Best friends and how marriage affects all those involved, In-Laws etc...So after the short honeymoon the couple (Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon) is surprised to find the grooms Best Friend (Olson) at their doorstep homeless. What follows is some brilliant script, acting, filming, lots of laughs and some touching moments as well. Michael Douglas proved again his acting genius in playing the part of the over-protective and vindictive Father-in-law. I gave this movie a 10 and its worth every bit of it!!!
The Brothers Grimm (2005)
The Brothers Grimm is just that Grim from beginning to end!
It took a lot to sit thru this movie. Had the typical dark cloudy day 16th century atmosphere with dirty faced people and all. The actual story line would have been good if it had stuck with it. But this movie was going in so many different directions that my teenage sons, who LOVE movies like this, had trouble following the story line. Then the kicking of the kitten into a fan where its pulverized and splatters all the onlookers to which the King licks the blood up-I mean come on. My daughter left the room in tears-that was one sick prop. My advice, stay away from this movie, its a waste of your time and only serves to entertain the morbid. I give this move a #1 Awful. Thats going easy on it...
Phil the Alien (2004)
A waste of film and my time
This movie has got to be one of the worst I have ever seen make it to DVD!!! The story line might have clicked if the film had more funding and writers that would have cut the nonsense and sickly scenes that I highly caution parents on.... But the story line is like a loose cannon. If there was such a thing as a drive thru movie maker-this one would have sprung from that.It reminded me a lot of the quickie films that were put out in the 1960's, poor script writing and filming.
The only sensible characters in the whole movie was the bartender and beaver. The rest of the film, could have easily been made by middle school children. I give this film a rating of 1 as it is truly awful and left my entire family with a sense of being cheated. My advice-Don't Watch It!!!
Broken Flowers (2005)
Don't waste your time on this one!!!!!!!
I have always been a big Bill Murray fan, and I still am. I mean his acting in this film was impeccable. I am very disappointed in Jim Jarmusch, the screenwriter and now after seeing the movie have no doubts that he wrote it in 2 and 1/2 weeks... Murray plays an over-aged bachelor named Don Johnston who gets a mysterious pink letter in the mail from a girlfriend twenty years past that claims she bore him a son. She doesn't sign the letter and tells him his son is on a road trip to perhaps look for his Dad. The post mark is unreadable...Sounds pretty clever, things get even more mysterious when his neighbor is obsessed with Don going in search of this un-named girl friend....Jarmusch puts just enough bait at each scene to gain the viewer enough curiosity to continue watching... Some of the parts are funny, but all in all it was a big disappointment. The ending was a bad joke that left us in shock that the writer would end 106 minutes of movie right there...To me, its a waste of 106 minutes of my life. Don't waste your time on this one, I give it a -1...
Black Cadillac (2003)
A Thrill Ride from Start To Finish, With Mysteries Around Every Corner
I gave this move a rating of 10 as it certainly kept myself and 4 teenage sons on the edge of our seats!!!! Three young men head south and cross the Iowa/Minnesota Border to party at a Roadhouse noted for hot girls.
After a typical bar fight they head home, soon to be terrorized by a 57 Black Cadillac. Its another mystery around every corner as the excitement builds when they pick up a police officer who's car is broke down....Side Notes: Also claims to be based on a true story...Very well written and produced, good camera work-well worth buckling up for the ride that will change your life!!!
