The Chelsea Handler Show (2006)
Unconventional yet quality humor.
Don't expect run of the mill humor that's geared towards the masses. You need a bit of gray matter to get the humor on this show; pay attention and you'll be laughing hard. The writing is well-thought out and as such deserves an audience that who will appreciate it. Chelsea's humor is high on self-depreciation but not in a way that grates one's nerves. If anything, her humor is quite brave - recently she exposed her physical "flaws" in a great skit. An attractive woman, she actually downplays her physical beauty and relays on the quality of the show's writing. Watch her carefully and you'll see her dedication to her performance minus any cheap gimmicks. Her show is definitely a great replacement for "Taradise" which simply exploited the faults of a B-Actress as she stumbled her way through exotic locales. E!, please keep her show on the schedule, she doesn't deserve the "Taradise" fate.
Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber (2005)
She does the job!
JLH sheds her goody-two-shoes persona for a hard-driving character that makes this movie WORK! Katya is a non-naive ingénue to the workplace; she's a predator who understands what needs to be done in corporate America. She'll do what it takes to be successful in the world of fashion journalism. Especially delicious are the scenes wherein the in vogue bars change constantly...anyone who has lived in the city has gone through that. In this movie, we see Katya's great heart that is only covered up her desire to climb the corporate ladder. We see Katya's desire for the "perfect" man interfere with her career goals. Watch the movie to find out how she resolves the conflict. I hope JLH explores her full range of acting ability and singing ability both of which are proved in this film.
I have great hopes for the Ghost Whisperer on CBS this fall.
War of the Worlds (2005)
The aliens die due to the Earth's bacteria! How original!
All the special effects in the world can't justify keeping with H.G. Wells' original ending. I find it insulting that Spielberg would try to impress moviegoers with 21st Century techno-fluff minus an original ending. Think "The Natural" wherein the novel ended with a strikeout and the movies ended with a homerun. It is okay for a movie to change a novel's ending. I read H.G.'s story in Junior High; I didn't need to spend good money to see the same ending augmented by computer enhancements. I'm sure my own laptop could generate the same effects and save me the ticket price. Also Cruise seems to be going through the motions as "Ray"...I'm not convinced that his character really cares about mankind or Dakota Fanning. "Ray" just wants to save his own a**.
