A Star Is Born (2018)
A good but depressing movie
A struggling restaurant worker who moonlights at drag night clubs gets a big break when a country music singing star unexpectedly ends up in a night club where she is performing. As her rise to stardom , riches and fame ,ascends quicker than a rocket, her partner, who discovered her, sinks into and gets destroyed by alcoholism and drug addiction.
Bradley Cooper's performance is somewhat annoying because his scruffy, ugly facial hair never changes (he is actually a handsome man dressed up to look like Kris Kristofferson in this movie...ewww ;/), and he often mumbles through his lines. But hey, that's the way substance abusers are.
Lady Gaga's timing and expressions, singing are freaking amazing.
The motto of this movie is: There is nothing cool about alcohol/ drug addiction. Apparently, many in real life refuse to get the memo.
Before Lady Gaga appeared in any movies, I already knew she could act based on her appearance in one of her music videos with Beyonce a long time ago. What may be a pleasant surprise for some is the display of her musical singing versatility here. She is quite the skilled entertainer who has the whole package, similar to Madonna. Here she sings country ballads, country rock, pop and French cabaret showtunes with such conviction it might surprise some people.
Mystery Diners (2011)
It's f---ing fake!
Quit scamming people Hollywood. It's why I no longer pay to see your SHI*T!!!
What legal implications are involved with producers who offer no disclaimer and charade their programs as pretending to be real. It is ridiculous they are not held accountable.
I don't understand why the producer can't be sued considering he does not offer a disclaimer that the program has faked scenarios.
Just know something people ---You can't make a "reality" show without making it fake. It's impossible, because what you see takes careful planning and organization. Scenes have to be edited, actors have to know what to say (scripts), scenes have to be re-shot, they use make-up artists, caterers and times of events have to be arranged and scheduled FOR EVERY PRODUCTION, whether it charades as a "reality" TV show or it's a feature film
Idiocracy (2006)
You won't be able to stop laughing
This movie is so freakin' funny and flies right in the face of corporatism, bad education culture, looming popularity of stupidity in society, and blind patriotic hubris. That's probably why 20th Century Fox Studio execs didn't like the film. Who died and made them God? Although it wouldn't be the first time people that think they know better were wrong about what the public wanted. Jurassic Park was panned by every critic, yet it was huge success at the box office and beyond. That one went right over the critics head -- sad.
Not promoting this movie was a bad move on the studio's part, because this film could have been a huge success had it not gotten such paltry promotion and release I felt like I was looking into the scary future of the USA when watching this film, but somehow it was so hilarious
Behind the Candelabra (2013)
Stunning and Tragic
Seems strange to me that huge studios would pass up on a film like this considering its big line-up of A-list male screen actors; but I guess I'm more open minded than most of the motion picture viewing audiences. This film wasn't anymore gay than "ShowGirls" was misogynist, objectifying and offensive, and it had far more depth and was way more interesting.
Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, Dan Ackroyd, and Rob Lowe give absolutely stunning and brilliant performances in this movie. I mean wow...what talent...Until this film, I hadn't realized what incredible range Michael Douglas.
What may be surprising to most is that being so wealthy and not all that good looking really, Liberace had no shortage of boy toys at his disposal. Not all of them were prostitutes.
The film dramatically chronicles the dramatic twists, nightmares and pleasures he ran into when he got into a relationship with a 16 year old known by the name of Scott Thorson. The film does not spend that much time talking about the LIberace's grueling lucrative career and famous persona
Poseidon (2006)
A wet mess of a remake
I suppose the producers and casting agents thought $120million, big names like Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss would save the day with this stinker - but there wasn't a chance in hell any of that could have saved this wet mess. The people that produced and directed it must have been on coke and bourbon
There are several obvious mistakes 1. If they were supposed to be sailing in the North Atlantic, it is well know that water that cold will put you in shock and hypothermia in minutes.
2. In one scene we see the ship totally capsized but still floating, then when it finally starts to sink, it is seen in an upright position. Hmm, really? What were the people that made this movie thinking?
The acting is mediocre at best and cheesy. Strangely enough I could barely tell the difference between either one of the female characters with the exception of Emmy Rossum. Mike Vogel might as well have been a hologram or robot his presence was so insignificant and banal. It didn't help any that he was given some of the most corny and whiny lines. Another problem - unlike the 1972 original, you never get attached to any of the main characters with this terrible remake.
The only thing great about this movie perhaps is the special effects. It's the kind of movie you'll want to play at a house party New Year's beer bust so all your friends can get a good laugh, otherwise I don't see what the point is, because it's pretty awful.
Kill Your Darlings (2013)
Disturbing but Intriguing
I found this movie quite disturbing, and it had nothing to do with seeing "Harry Potter" spread his tender young legs for another man. However the fervent iconoclastic pace was surprising and mentally stimulating. I didn't like how the movie started with clips of the epilogue. Why give hints of what happens before the story is told? I don't get it. I also didn't like flashbacks and dream sequences. I can never tell what I'm watching when I see those types of things - whether it's supposed to be happening in the present, or whether they are just thinking about those events or what.
There are other things going on in the movie I found unbelievable and didn't understand. One of them, was how everyone seemed to make mountains out of mole hills, but I guess that was just the 1940s The main thing I got out of this movie is that feeling like an outsider and mental illness is nothing new. You either get lucky with it, or you don't.
