ThunderCats Roar (2020)
Uh...
Let me just say this.
This is one of the best modern reboots. The art style, animation and character designs shows justice to the original series. The characters are two-dimensional and likable. It focuses more on action and less on comedy.
I was referring to the 2011 reboot. Roar is none of them.
It's the beginning of another new decade, and Cartoon Network is STILL doing it. Although nothing can top The Problem Solverz's visuals, ThunderCats Roar is incredibly boring, hopelessly unfunny, and highly unnecessary at the same time.
I was disgusted at the designs, the shift to comedy...the flanderization.... Although I don't the 1985 and 2011 incarnations (yet) I watched a few episodes of this show but not the two-part premiere. I thought it would have an equal focus on action and comedy (like Rise of the TMNT and DuckTales).
I was wrong.
Being an unnecessary Cartoon Network reboot, it really doesn't give itself, let alone its two predecessors, any justice. The characters are dumbed down, being one-dimensional and far from being their original 1985/2011 molds; Lion-O is a happy-go-lucky dude who constantly annoys us viewers. The plots are lackluster and cliched -- one such episode involved Lion-O searching for juice in a swamp...so that he could open a jar of cookies, despite his buffness! Dude, you could just call this ToddlerKittens Meow! And the jokes and humor are really, really lackluster, dated, uninspirired and even forced. I never once smiled or laughed out loud during the whole ordeal. Jesus, this makes the ThunderLOLCats skit from Mad look tolerable.
I feel totally bad for the voice actors. The show wasted talented anime voice actors such as Max Mittleman and Patrick Seitz, and it would've been amazing if they would've done voice work on the 2011 revival.
And the animation and art style? Mediocre and average, with the character designs feeling like they don't belong to the ThunderCats universe and more like they're discounts on O.K. K.O.
That's all there is to this show that somewhat exists. There's nothing good, let alone redeemable, about it, and it isn't even worth not a single watch. You're better off watching the original 1985 series, and/or the 2011 revival, rather than this trainwreck of a reboot.
Cupcake & Dino: General Services (2018)
Nonsensical but also funny to watch.
Wow. This is actually pretty funny. The plots may be nonsensical but this is a show I reccomend you watch this show on Netflix if you have an account. It's basically Pickle and Peanut and Breadwinners done right. The jokes are good in quality and actually funny, the animation is creative, and the characters are tolerable, adorable and hilarious. The title characters are SwaySway & Buhdeuce and Pickle & Peanut if they aren't one-dimensional or being loud and obnoxious or even having to rely on toilet humor for cheap comedy. It's a weird cartoon from Canada, but weird is better than boring. If I made a weird and funny cartoon, it would be about a happy-go-lucky magical 13-year-old named Cheese and his normal 10-year-old cousin Mac, who would deliver packages in wacky and strange situations, with lots of creativity. Again, give this show more love by watching this show on Netflix (or, if you live in Canada, Teletoon).
It's Pony (2020)
Sure hope Nickelodeon doesn't screw this one up...
After a decade where new Nicktoons range from memorable (Korra, Harvey Beaks, The Loud House, TMNT) to good (T.U.F.F Puppy, Penguins of Madagascar, Welcome to the Wayne, Rise of the TMNT) to meh (Robot and Monster, Bunsen Is a Beast) to just plain stale (Breadwinners, Sanjay and Craig, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Pig Goat Banana Cricket, Planet Sheen), Nickelodeon has made a show that feels like nostalgia. It feels like one of those Saturday morning cartoons from the 1990s and early 2000s -- you wake up, still in your PJs, and eat sugary cereal while you watch cartoons all morning. It also has that fresh, old Nicktoon smell.
And that show would be It's Pony. It's a hilarious thrillride and an adorable cartoon. I loved the titular Pony: he's unpredictable, gives me a chuckle and got me smiling. And you gotta root for Annie; she's an adorable girl who helps Pony with his problems. I laughed when that episode on plants was uploaded to YouTube. It's like Hey Arnold and Doug mixed with Big City Greens. It's not the next My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, but it is visually fun and easy on the eyes.
While there are two other cartoons that would rival It's Pony (there's also one more, but we don't talk about reboots), this is a show that I recommend to watch.
Sure hope Nickelodeon would give this show more love, effort and high ratings put into it. I'm worried this show would be banished to the Nicktoons network, like those other poor shows, but still, with Brian Robbins in charge at Nick, the show will never be plagued by stuff like that. Anyway, I'm giving this show praise for having good jokes and cute, fun visuals. And after airing nothing but SpongeBob SquarePants and The Loud House, this is a new show I think Nickelodeon can't reject...a nice breath of fresh air.
Good to see a show that's not either one. Support by watching new episodes of this awesome show to earn better ratings!
