Bad Words (2013)
Vulgar and Hilarious
Quite a basic story, an adult is able to compete in the national spelling bee championships due to a loophole in the rules. The real joy of the movie is Jason Bateman's relationship with little Rohan Chand, teaching him swear words, giving him his first ever look at a real pair of titties and generally teaching the little spelling master to have fun! It's pretty bad, an adult trying to psych out 10 year olds during the contest is hilarious, he even moves on to abusing the parents too. There is a point to the whole thing which was good but if you wanna watch a grown man swearing at and insulting 10 year old's this is for you! Pure fun, real funny!
Boys of Abu Ghraib (2014)
Showers, Portaloos and Prison Bars...
This could have been a full on, disturbing account of the horrors and inhumanities that went on in the US 'prisons' in Iraq. Instead it's an account of one young man's tour posted at Abu Ghraib. Working in the motor pool he gets bored and volunteers to work in the 'Hard Site' with all of the hardcore detainees. He starts off upset at the way these men are treated and befriends one of them. His tour is extended, he gets upset at a piece of wood, has another shower, uses a portaloo, eats crap food....and then finds out his insurgent friend killed 18 people in a bomb attack. Surprised? He is an insurgent after all....he gets even more upset, has his leave cancelled, has a shower, uses a portaloo, you get the picture. He ends up becoming a nasty piece of work, screaming at the prisoners and playing White Zombie to them very loud. Then he goes home. I really wouldn't bother with this film, it's like an even more boring Jarhead set in a prison.
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
Waiting for something to happen...
Well, this movie starts off really well, drawing you into the character of a depressed musical vampire, (boo hoo) and his fast-reading girlfriend who lives on the other side of the planet. I was just waiting for this to turn into a blood-fest, or, well anything to happen really. But it didn't. The first hour seemed to be building up to something... Then the second hour drags on and the film ends. An interesting view of the long, boring life of a vampire, it certainly doesn't make being an undead blood-lover look appealing, they are more like junkies than the exciting, romantic view of vampires seen (almost) everywhere else. It certainly doesn't make a second viewing appealing either. If you like slow films which are basically all about the characters with no real events then this is for you! Pretty dull.
