I Care a Lot (2020)
When you root for the Mafia to kill the protagonist, then something is wrong with your script
The problem with this movie is that it tries to make you root for the protagonist, a greedy psychopath lesbian exploiter of the elderly.
Maybe if you are a film critic for the New York Times you might enjoy this movie because you see yourself in the protagonist. But every sane human wants to see her taken down, not cheer her on in her superhuman exploits.
You quickly begin to root for the low lifes of the Russian Mafia. And when their attempts to free the enslaved elderly woman and later their assassination attempts on the protagonist and her equally psycho girlfriend fail you moan, because the female Hitler won again.
I expected the movie to turn around halfway through and see the protagonist taken apart piece by piece, but that does not happen. She turns into Jason Bourne and takes down the Mafia single-handedly and makes the Mafia boss do her bidding. Missed chance.
So it is an alright movie. It is well made. Well acted. But I hate it. Good job!
Clinton Cash (2016)
Shocking tale of corruption and cronyism
If only half of the presented facts in this documentary are true, then the USA will have a bleak future ahead of it.
This film is based on the New York Times bestselling book with the same name by Peter Schweizer from 2015. The movie was financed by the executive chairman of Breitbart News, a right wing media organization which prominently and enthusiastically supported Donald Trump from the very beginning of his campaign. Take this as you will.
The main topic of the documentary is the Clinton Foundation, a nonprofit corporation founded by Bill Clinton in 1997 and run by both Hillary and Bill Clinton. Supposedly dedicated to helping people in need, but only 10% of the money flowing into the foundation is actually used for charity work.
Weirdly enough the foundation receives large donations from foreign donors whenever the Clinton's work out deals and contracts in these foreign nations in the name of the State Department. Plus exorbitant speaking fees in the tens of millions of dollars range, also paid by said foreign donors and their associates. Cases ranging from atom weapon deals with India to misappropriated development aids for Haiti and environmentally irresponsible Canadian oil pipelines.
The documentary presents these cases in a somewhat dramatized fashion, with background images of burning money next to photos of the Clintons shaking hands with 3rd world despots, including dramatic music in the background.
Overall is the documentary an eye-opening experience. Definitely a must-see movie for people interested in the coming election.
Suisei no Gargantia (2013)
Enjoyable short anime
A quite entertaining anime with 13 episodes (plus two OVA side story episodes) about individuality, duty, compassion, the nature of humanity and laser throwing flying mecha of course.
Ledo is a soldier of the Galactic Alliance of Humankind. Born, raised and bred to fight Hideauze, a race of space- faring octopi and the greatest threat to the survival of the human kind in the galaxy. He lives in a quasi- symbiotic relationship with his mecha Chamber. The height of human engineering in the fields of artificial intelligence and warfare.
Ledo and Chamber end up stranded on our earth, the long lost birth place of humanity, after they get separated from their fleet during a flight through an artificial wormhole. They very soon have to notice that the humans left on earth are different than their space warrior descendants. They love freedom, good food, entertainment and most shockingly: they help the weak and old people instead of killing them for the greater good.
The strong side of this anime are the two main characters Ledo and Chamber. Their character development and attempts to cope with the unfamiliar environment make up for most of the weak points of the show. Another strong side of the show are it's art style and ship designs.
What annoyed me the most were the side characters. The three young girls Amy, Saaya and Melty are carbon copies of each other. They seem to have identical personalities, look similar, act the same way and do the same things. Which is especially annoying since one of them is the love interest of the main character Ledo. You could switch them out mid-scene and I probably wouldn't have noticed. Also the elders (or whatever they are called) of Gargantia have severe cases of brain farts every time they show up, they constantly make absolutely irrational decisions and seem to be destined to lead every single one of their subjects into certain doom whenever they have the chance.
Overall Suisei no Gargantia ("Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet" in the English dub) is an enjoyable mecha anime. It's nothing special, but it is worth your time if you like science fiction stories about the human condition and a good portion of mecha battles now and then.
