Shtisel (2013)
Awesome costumes but seriously unrealistic plot
I understand the rave reviews others have posted, I assume that if I was required (I wouldn't volunteer) to write a review for a series about the Amish this would have happened to me since I don't know enough about them (except how they dress). there's one things that binds them all they are not orthodox. I am. There's one thing they got perfect and for that I gotta give credit: The costumes. they are so spot on that they would pass even a close inspection and fool anyone in the street. as for the rest, well: The actors are decent (by Israeli standards not Hollywood's) their interactions would have been real anywhere outside of where they purport to portray. and here is the big problem: NONE; NOT EVEN A SINGLE ONE of the story lines and story arcs would actually cut it in the real world in the real religious community this couldn't possibly happen, none of it. they basically took a story from the secular world and inserted Ultra orthodox characters I was severely disappointed I expected them to have done better research being in Israel and in close proximity to the actual community.
so for all the people hoping to get a glimpse or an insight into the lives of a religious family you are sadly misled, just because they are dressed so does not make it so and the costume definitely does not make the clown in this case.
I only gave five stars because of the costumes, they're just phenomenal.
Colossal (2016)
Absolutely Magnificent
I'll start from the bottom: The special effects are beautiful, Jason Sudeikis gives his usual stellar performance, but on this one its Anne Hathaway that shines through. Her brilliant performance is what holds this movie together and gives it life. Her emotions are painfully real and her expressions are spot on.
I highly recommend it for all fans of Sci-Fi and absurd
Diablo (2015)
Great Cast and Premise Wasted
Don't get me wrong, I love me some Scott Eastwood.
And Danny Glover Walton Goggins and Camilla Belle don't hurt either. But, ant its a big but that's only if you know how to use them..... in this case unfortunately it was a waste.
The movie is so slow that watching it at 1.5 speed still feels like its not moving. some scenery shots (not geographically correct, mind you) are (very) slightly reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino but while his shots are just long enough to appreciate the scenery and just short enough so it doesn't get boring the ones here were endlessly dragging and seriously boring.
The plot is riddled with gaping holes the script is awful and what could have been a great plot device (see Fight Club) is utterly see- through and totally expected.
Scott, if you are reading this please know that you are a great actor and your potential is limitless and it shines through even in a film like this, so don't let this one setback hinder your career pick better projects and you will undoubtedly succeed.
