Dominion: The Narrow Gate (2015)
Great TV that hits all the marks - DOMINION NAILED IT!
From heart-pounding to heart-breaking, this Dominion episode nailed it! I loved season 1, but it seriously pales in comparison to season 2. And this episode raised that bar yet again.
It goes from tight, dark halls in New Delphi to amazing outdoor vistas in Mallory. And, of course, we spend a decent amount of time with Claire in Vega. Having access to the larger Dominion world makes this season seem even more epic.
Alex's powers continue to evolve and it seems that he's perfected his eviction skills. He's tougher, more confident and very determined to protect Claire and Vega from Gabriel's army. Chris Egan (Alex) really owns the character now. It's such a pleasure to watch.
Mallory's secret is finally revealed; at least part of it. We learn why the people have to confess their secrets to Laurel, but are left in the dark about the identity of the prophet. Of course, Michael steps up at the moment of truth. I won't say what happens, except that my heart may have skipped a few beats out of anxiety. Tom Wisdom IS Michael. They could not have cast that part better.
Tensions in Vega continue to grow as Claire attempts to quash the V1 rebellion. She displays a new toughness and cold ruthlessness when a military mission is unsuccessful. On the upside, she has a new ally in Gates, but his motives and allegiances are unclear at this point. Roxanne McKee (Claire) and Nic Bishop (Gates) have great chemistry. Perhaps a new on-screen couple? Time will tell...
Speaking of time--We get a glimpse of ancient Gabriel (Carl Beukes) and Michael at a time when Michael was delivering Father's justice and Gabriel was a kind and caring soul. The flashback really sheds light on the twins' relationship. Their brotherly bond is one of the things that adds the most texture to the show. In fact, Gabriel's reactions in this episode nearly broke my heart. Carl Beukes really should take a bow for that outstanding performance.
Through the entire episode, the music adds so much! Bill Brown is simply a musical genius. His work adds layer upon layer to every scene. The acting is great, but the music makes you really "feel" what you're seeing.
Vaun Wilmott and his writing team (Becky Kirsch for this episode) continue to do a phenomenal job of building the Dominion world and characters. This episode answered just enough questions to make it satisfying, but left enough mystery to leave us begging for more of the story. I highly recommend this series.
Dominion: Heirs of Salvation (2015)
Sexy...Addictive...EPIC -- Great season opener!
The season 2 opener for Dominion is fantastic! Another reviewer gave a great plot summary, so I won't be repetitive. Instead, I'll just say this:
Dominion feels more like a big-screen blockbuster than a TV show. It has it all... an epic storyline (created by Vaun Wilmott), amazing visual effects (by SPIN VFX), a brilliant musical score (by Bill Brown), and beautiful & talented actors.
Tom Wisdom is magnetic and mesmerizing as the Archangel Michael. Don't even get me started on his sword-fighting skills, lovely British accent and that beach/ocean scene! Three months have passed since the terrible events of season 1 when he abandoned Vega and Alex. He's lost his faith and is desperate to find his way again. He stumbles upon Mallory, Alabama; a small town seemingly protected from the War of Extermination. But how, why, and at what cost, are questions that Michael is determined to unravel. You get the sense that Michael sincerely hopes his Father is there, but is afraid to trust that hope.
Chris Egan plays Alex, the Chosen One, with such charm that it's hard to imagine him in any other role. He's matured a lot since season 1. In this episode, he's confident and determined. He's also got some great humor, sarcasm and some newly developed bad-ass ninja skills. He and Noma (Kim Engelbrecht) make a great team. Gabriel (Carl Beukes) has held them prisoner in his aerie for three months, but a bomb dropped by Vega/Helena gives them the opportunity to escape.
Claire is played by the stunning & brilliant Roxanne McKee. In the start of season 2, we find her conspiring with the Arika (Shivani Ghai)in an effort to defend Vega and herself from the scheming and ruthless, David Whele (Anthony Stuart Head). The struggle for power in Vega is sure to be a riveting story this season.
All of the actors are simply gorgeous. Dominion has eye-candy aplenty. But in case that's not enough, there's just about everything else: action - check; fights - check; sex - check; political intrigue - check; touching moments - check; mystery - check; romance - check; humor - check; things blowing up - BIG CHECK.
If Sci-Fi is your thing, you'll definitely love Dominion! If not, see above.
Season 1 is great, and it helps to start there, but I don't think that's a requirement to enjoy Season 2. Seriously...watch it!
Dominion: Mouth of the Damned (2015)
Another GREAT episode! DOMINION continues to THRILL!
I absolutely LOVE this show! I just finished watching episode 202 (Mouth of the Damned) for the
well, let's just say I've lost count of the number of times I've watched.
The first time through, I was so captivated by the storyline, beautiful actors and the action on screen that I missed a lot of details. Now, the first thing I notice is the music. It just adds so much to the intensity, suspense and emotion of what's happening on screen. Bill Brown (who wrote the score) is absolutely brilliant! The next thing I'm noticing more is the little drops of humor embedded in the script and the interplay of the characters. The dialog and looks between Chris Egan (Alex) and Kim Engelbrecht (Noma) make me chuckle. And that's saying something, considering that they're usually in dire straights. Speaking of Alex
what a great change this season! He's only a little older, but clearly wiser and much more bad-ass. His story arch is developing nicely and so is Chris Egan's portrayal of him.
This episode, we get to see New Delphi for the first time. What a great set! It's perfect as a post-apocalyptic trading center. And Simon Merrells, who plays New Delphi's leader, Julian, is absolutely wonderful! He manages to be deadly serious and funny at the same time. How he pulls that off is a mystery. All I know is that I can't wait to see what he says and does next! Michael's storyline continues to unfold in Mallory. His search for truth and faith are making him appear more "human." But somehow, that just makes him even more angelic. Tom Wisdom (Michael)and Olivia Mace (Laurel) have great on screen chemistry. But it's clear that Michael is hesitant to take steps in that direction. After what happened with Becca, who can blame him? The town of Mallory continues to be a mystery, and I have no doubts that Vaun Wilmott and his brilliant writing team have some surprises in store for us on that front.
Probably the biggest surprise in this episode, for me, was Arika. I won't say much, other than that woman must have ice in her veins! Just WOW! Shivani Ghai (Arika) and Roxanne McKee (Claire) work really well together. I was actually relieved that Claire has an ally against the devious David Whele - who, by the way, is played to perfection by the amazing Anthony Stewart Head. But I'm not sure how far Claire should trust Arika. Her motives are unclear at this point.
Creator, Vaun Wilmott, has done a stellar job of building the world of Dominion. And director/EP, Deran Sarafian, continues to brilliantly translate Vaun's vision into an amazing on-screen experience. I can't wait to see what's next!
Dominion (2014)
Excellent series - You don't have to like sci-fi to LOVE DOMINION
Dominion is the most exciting new series I've seen in years on Syfy! The storyline is rich and compelling and the acting superb.
Tom Wisdom as the archangel Michael and Chris Egan as Alex Lannon (aka the Chosen One) were brilliant casting choices. Both are incredible actors. And they're very well supported by the rest of the cast; especially Anthony Stewart Head who plays the conniving David Whele.
And let's not forget the production. The sets and effects are amazing! (Don't get me started about those fabulous angel wings!) The episodes so far (1-6) have been delightfully diverse in their content. They've included some great fight scenes, some racy sex scenes, some touching moments, and lots of political scheming and maneuvering. It's a great combination that really keeps your attention and keeps the storyline moving forward.
Series creator Vaun Wilmott has done an amazing job in writing rich characters that inspire strong emotions. At times we love the characters and at times we despise them; sometimes in the same scene.
The setting for the series is Vega (post-apocalyptic Las Vegas). It was a perfect choice; both because it makes sense relative to the original film, Legion, upon which it's based, and because it provides a rich and interesting backdrop. Although the location will definitely keep our interest for a long while to come, it will be nice to have some episodes that venture out to other locales.
I highly recommend this series and look forward to many more seasons as this wonderful storyline unfolds.
UPDATE: After watching the entire season, I am more excited than ever for this show! It just kept getting better and better. The season finale definitely left me wanting to know and see more! Outstanding!
