Oppenheimer (2023)
Must see instant classic
It belongs on the top 20 of most movie lovers. Pure story telling brilliancy in editing, dialogue, acting (in particular by Robert Downey Jr. And Cillian Murphy, the latter one being an almost guaranteed academy award), musical score, and directing.
There's a lot of characters and it can be confusing if you are not a nerd who kind of knows the background already. But that also adds to the replay value. I don't remember having this vivid immediate feeling that I need to rewatch a movie soonish, ever since I first watched T2.
The characters are deep and relatable, without being boring or overwhelming.
It's a masterpiece. Not wanting to offer any spoilers, the greatest disservice goes to the villain - a complicated man who also had plenty of qualities, not mentioned in the movie. The villain serves the story well, in Hollywood fashion, and remains mostly loyal to the facts.
I saw it in IMAX, in the middle of the room. And let me tell you - that's how you should see it!
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Low expectations resulted in a good experience
I rarely see movies with such terrible reviews. Occasionally I open exceptions, and I almost always regret it. Lucy is a good example.
But occasionally, a movie or TV show is hammered by negative reviews it doesn't deserve. Jurassic World came out to terrible reviews and ended up being quite enjoyable. And the same is true for Matrix Resurrections. It's not as fresh as the original, but it's a decent return to the story.
It could be a bit better if it had:
* A smarter/tighter narrative. The core is solid, but it feels occasionally clumsy.
* Less plot holes.
* Better actors in the supporting cast. Especially Smith and Bugs. NPH was great. Keanu and Carrie Ann were good as expected.
* Respectable antagonists (there's enough grunts with horrible aim to remind you of Star Wars).
Even with those flaws, it's still a very solid 7 / 10. Almost an 8.
If I was a betting man, I'd say the low ratings may be connected to the movie being a little "woke". But it's fine and not done in a way that really detracts from the story.
People need to chill. The director is a trans woman. If you weren't expecting the movie to be at least a little woke, then you weren't thinking it through.
Solid 7. Almost an 8..
The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
Very pleasant Sunday afternoon movie
It's the sort of pleasant Disney family movie for the whole family. Some laughs, and plenty of tears. Filled with clichés, and pretty much no unexpected turns in the plot.
Great photography, good acting all around, ok story.
Eskiya (1996)
Overrated (due to nationalism?)
It's the second Turkish movie I see that completely fails to live up to it's very high IMDB rating.
Most of the reviews here are about how this is a masterpiece of Turkish cinema. For an international audience that is completely irrelevant.
If you really want to see a Turkish movie, Kis Uykusu is very slow but significantly better. This movie is too slow, the effects are terrible, the plot is average and the acting is subpar, especially in violent/death scenes. By international standards it's not a good movie.
Carrie Pilby (2016)
Festival of clichés
Cringy, poorly written dialogues. All the ridiculous hollywood clichés of what smart people should act/talk like (80% rubbish). Overall entertaining Sunday afternoon movie, to watch with good company and completely forget you've ever seen it.
The Grand Tour (2016)
Dumbed down to the extreme...!
First the good parts:
Beautiful cars, beautiful sceneries, technical perfect presentation. Clearly the budget for this show is quite big.
Having said that... The shows tries very hard to create a good chemistry between the characters - and fails miserably!
I very much wanted to like it! But the heavily scripted dialogues and scenes scream FAKE at every single second. The humor hardly ever works - it's entertaining at its best but mostly so childish that even my immature mind cringes at the stupidity.
I've finished the third episode hoping it would get better. I'm giving up now. The only solace I can take from having wasted 3 hours of my life is that I saw someone who is generally considered to be an asshole fall flat on his face.
I really couldn't care less about celebrity gossip but the first episode makes it obvious that Jeremy Clarkson is sending a huge "up yours" to the BBC. Google quickly told me he was fired for being a terrible human being too often.
MILD SPOILERS AHEAD Apparently the lesson he took from that was to show BBC that he could "fall up" and that he was happier than ever! The entire thing seems convoluted, childish and sad... "I'm so happy now! Look at how much better the weather is in California!"
In conclusion, the three stars are for the beautiful cars and the technical part of the show. The execution is flawless, the plot and characters are terrible.
Up (2009)
A great movie - very funny.
Pixar brings us another blockbuster and, as always, their quality is UP.
The movie is preceded by the typical Pixar short, this one called "Partly Cloudy" which is one of the best ever. Oscar stuff! As for the movie, it is not only funny but also quite heavy on emotions. It deals with life as a hole and many small children will make some hard questions to their parents after watching this.
However, these subjects are dealt with gracefully and those question would need answers eventually. Pixar's just doing you a favor! I found two flaws in it that take the perfect 10 away (like WALLE deserved):
1 - Not Pixar's fault, but the Portuguese distributor decided that the 3D version would be in Portuguese only. Most "grown-ups" I know wanted to see the subbed one with the English voices (as we usually see movies in Portugal) but instead we had to miss out on the original voice work to get 3D. VERY disappointing.
2 - The movie is a little unbalanced. The first 15 minutes of the movie brought the hole theater close to tears (it's that good! - lots of grown man crying). The rest of the movie could never recapture the emotional weight of those first few minutes... loads of laughs though! Definitely worth viewing independently of your age.
