Pacific Rim (2013)
Pro Wrestling at it's worst...
Part way through this film, I realized that it was basically just a rip off of the WWF. All of the fighting is like a pro wresting match in the water. The fighting makes no sense, with little thought to how fights would actually take place.
Then there are the little 'drama' moments. The big inspirational speech by Alba that is just a rip off of the one from Independence Day. Just without the heart. The drama moment between father and son, all while the world is burning and monsters are attacking. The 'alpha males' stopping to smell the roses you could say.
I used to think that Battlefield Earth was the worst movie I had ever seen. Well, Travolta just might be giving some slack and lose that top spot to this atrocity.
Foundation (2021)
I hoped for a good season two....
....yet I find myself just not caring about any of the characters. Season One was alright, perhaps a 6 or 6.5, but I am half way through season two and I realized that I am hoping they all die so things can just end. I am not sure I can make it to the end of two, but I will try.......hoping that they all just get sent out an airlock.
Why is this season so boring? Is it the source material, which I haven't read, or are the scripts just that bad? The acting is fine to a point, but the story is so convoluted and did I mention boring?
Please just kill the Foundation off, let Empire win, and end the mess.
FBI: God Complex (2023)
So many errors and just silly dialog
Where to begin. The talk of inducing labor when a baby's heart rate is too slow is so bad. They would do a C-Section, which they mentioned, but in conjunction with 'inducing labor'. Please do at least a little research if you are going to write for television. The manufactured drama is just so tiresome.
Now lets talk a little about how firearms work. When a semi-auto handgun fires the last round, the slide locks back. The trigger is at that point no used for anything. It makes no noise and has no function. Yet writers and directors don't seem to comprehend this well known fact. Instead they want the drama of the dry fire noise from a revolver. Click, click, click. That is the sound a revolver makes when it is fired on either an empty chamber or a round that has already been fired. In this episode, the 'bad guy' shoots off a bunch or rounds then the gun makes clicking noises, yet the slide does not lock open. The outright stupidity of the writing / directing is so apparent. There are actual books you can buy that discuss how guns, rifles, shotguns, etc. Work written just for screenwriters. Please use them so you don't come off as being completely stupid.
Fire Country (2022)
Enough manufactured drama to last a life time
I have watched all episodes that have aired and I find the show to be so cliched and at time just silly. I love watching them dig a fire line that is 3' wide and just about as long, all while the main characters stand around talking. So much talk about 'leaders' and how to lead, yet they again stand around talking about personal stuff, and not paying attention to what is going on around them. Then bad things happen and they are so surprised.
At times I have to just about cry out loud due to the unrealistic things happening in the show. Why do I watch it? Because my wife enjoys it so I watch and try to keep my mouth shut.
Last Seen Alive (2022)
Typical Gerard Butler Movie.....so predictable
The plot is so predictable. Angry guy cannot converse with anyone without blowing up. Calm police detective thinks the guy likely did it so there is an immediate chasm between them. Both ignore the evidence.
I have now watched the last four movies that Butler has done in the past few years. Seems like they are all the same, and he is tired of doing them, so just phones in his performance. Pretty much like other actors who are one trick ponies.
I watched this one because I thought it might be a little different and it could have been. Yet the writing was bad, so the actors, all of them, just read their lines with little thought and cashed their checks. This is the kind of movie that gives 'action' movies a bad name.
There was a similar movie 25 years ago with Kurt Russel that was so much better. The actors gave it their best and the results were much better. Go watch Breakdown instead of this road kill.
Bosch (2014)
Did not like it at first...
I tried Bosch when it first started to air and didn't care for it. I recently gave it another try and was hooked. It is one of the finest TV shows I have ever watched. The cast is simply amazing. Of course Welliver makes the perfect Bosch. I have read all the books and he does about a perfect job. What makes it a great series is that the rest of the cast is just as good. Crate and Barrel provide so much fun to the show. Hector is a perfect fit for J Edger. I cannot say that Reddick is my.favorite cast member, but he is so good in the role of Irving that I would watch the show simply for his performances. Aquino adds so much realism and support. I do miss Calderon as Jimmy though.
Perhaps the best part is that they don't try and solve every case in 20 minutes. Never been a cop, but it seems like the show is one of the most honest about the work they do. No simple solutions, no simple answers.
My only complaint is that 70 episodes is too few. The quality never dips and they should have done another five or six seasons. Not to have done so was a crime.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
I was underwhelmed but...
So much anticipation for this series to begin, and yet after watching just the first episode, I am disappointed. I fell asleep the first time I watched it, but tried again and made it through.
I found the dialog mediocre and the acting was meh. The worst part was the awe they tried to instill was so overblown. For all feeling of 'high elves' and how great they are, I was left thinking they were mostly clueless. While I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Jackson, there was much in the movies I disliked. Yet I thought the tone of the movies, regarding elves, men, dwarfs, etc. Was pretty good. Jackson seemed to have caught the various races in the books well and mostly did them justice. In this new series, I found the elves so full of themselves they were not enjoyable to watch. Men seemed inherently one dimensional and don't get me started on the Harfoot. They seemed like a mockery of any real race or people.
I was disappointed, but am hopeful things will improve. After all, it has only been one epi.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
More disappointed than ever...
...in the three movies. I just reread The Hobbit and realized what I have known for a long time. The book is great, the movies lackluster to be kind. Mostly the three Hobbit movies stink.
Even cutting the movies to two, while helping, would have been bad but an improvement. They added so much material that did nothing for the story but drag things out. It was such a blatant money grab, all while ruining what could have been two very enjoyable movies. It is sad really how much Jackson and Hollywood destroys.
The book was a good read and straightforward. The movies were just, well, boring. I first read The Hobbit in 1973 and have reread it many times. If they had only stayed true to the book, with expansion in a few places where needed to flesh out some of the story lines. Nope, they add bad filler in so many places.
The Orville (2017)
Confused...
Not me, but the show, is confused. It cannot decide if it is a comedy or a serious Scifi. It fails at both badly. It is just not funny, in fact the characters are just so bad that I find myself hoping they will die.
If the intent is to be serious Scifi, well, it fails at that even worse. The decisions made, if it were actually happening, would result in death for the all and the ship repeatedly. The characters are more concerned about who is dating who then to actually do their job. I just finished the episode Majority Rule where the navigator gets arrested and almost given a lobotomy for dancing with a statue. The stupidity of his actions, when they are supposed to be not drawing attention to themselves, is unbelievable. I wanted him to under go the 'correction' just because he deserved it.
I am continuing to watch because it is like a slow motion train wreck. Still, how does any show become so dumb?
Outer Range (2022)
What????
Coming from the mountain west, I tend to try shows set in the area. Thought this would be interesting and sort of enjoyed the first episode or two. Then things took a weird turn and now I am just trying to understand the train wreck.
Does anyone really act the way these people do? I know people that own farms/ranches and they work incredibly hard and the idea of going out to have a beer most nights is beyond absurd.
I also cannot get my head around how any man would keep things secret like the Brolin character does. I suppose if he had been abducted as a kid perhaps, but beyond that, I just don't see it.
I have watched through ep4 now and the show makes no sense. The past few years, with all the streaming going on, all the new shows, I suspect that script writers are in short supply. Apparently anyone with a computer can sell a half-baked idea for lots of money.
The best shows are always rooted in some sort of actual reality. The best sci-fi follows physics. Things still need to make sense. Well, Outer Range quit making any sense about ep 3 or so.
I will likely complete watching because who can turn away from watching the cars jump the track and all the various freight go flying?
Black Summer (2019)
Should be called 'Stupid Human Tricks'
I am three episodes into this show. The acting is fair to good, but the script writers and possibly the director should be sent to a small island and left there.
In the early stages of a zombie apocalypse, is anyone really dumb enough to drink and drive, all while trying to get away from an ominous 'black truck'? Trying to escape the black truck and you don't pay much attention to the sides or behind you?
Searching a school and you don't bother to already have some sort of weapon, even a stick? You give up your only weapon to save someone you met 3 hours ago, then cry when they die?
Seriously, the only smart ones are the kids killing adults. The adults are just to stupid to leave alive.
If the writer's version of the world is accurate, kill off the Earth now with a meteor, or a plague or something. We don't deserve to live. If the writers are wrong with their little vision, just give them a spatula and let them flip burgers for the rest of their lives.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
It just kept getting dumber.
Seldom have I seen such a dumb movie. The bad guys are walking cliches and the US military officers aren't smart enough to be a cliche. So many plot holes, so much simply dumb dialog.
It simply isn't worth anyone's time to watch this movie. I was kind and gave it a 4 star rating. About the only movie I have seen that is worse is Battlefield Earth.
War of the Worlds (2019)
How did this ever get a second season?
This idea had merit, but like so many shows/movies, it turned out just bad. I don't blame poor acting for oh so slow motion train wreck but the writing. I forced myself to watch all 8 episodes but I will not watch any more. It might have actually made Battlefield Earth look good.
Away (2020)
Written by 14 year old girls and a...
I powered through the entire 10 episodes, but it was a slog. So much time devoted to silly stuff. Actual professionals would not spend their time on the kind of discussions and actions that they have these people doing. Makes NASA look like fools, gives females a bad name and pretty much looks like high school.
These scripts must have been written by 3 fourteen year old girls and 12 year old boy. Love how the back up water system is twitchy, but is used in a spacecraft traveling to Mars.
The acting was fine, the scripts were just bad, really bad.
Into the Dark: They Come Knocking (2019)
Are Writers Just Dumb?
Towards the beginning of the episode, the family pulls into a gas station in their pickup pulling a trailer. The first thing the father does is get out and check the oil on his truck. Why? You cannot get an accurate reading when you have been driving it. Checking the oil was just something to do so he could talk to his daughter. OK, why not clean the windshield? Writers think they know something but since they have never done it themselves they really don't. I hate stupid mistakes like this and they happen all the time.
Criminal Minds: The Bunker (2017)
Worst episode I have ever seen.
This is the worst CM I have seen. The show has been getting progressively worse, but this one episode was a giant step down in quality. Cancel the series now.
