Midsomer Murders: Death of the Small Coppers (2018)
Decent fare as expected from Midsomer Murders
I know there are some poor reviews here but I quite enjoyed the episode, was it a classic? probably not, the ending seemed quite rushed and ended akin to what we get from Lewis whereby everyone seems to simultaneously realise at the very last minute who the killer is and converge at the place the killer is attempting one last killing...
The motives for the killer were a bit ridiculous, i mean, come on, who kills people just because of a girl your dad broke it off with...
There were two backgrounds to the killing, circulous and the butterfly's yet in the end neither had anything to do with the killings...
also in terms of the ending, how did barnaby know that Winters was in danger, he would have initially assumed he was with the Danish officer at the old womans house... I also didnt see the value of bringing back in the Danish Officer, didnt really fit with the episode in my view. It looks like the writers were a little short on content so decided to push in a load of different bits and pieces to cover the holes in the plot.
In all, I am being a bit persnickety here, it was a decent episode and I enjoyed it.
On a wider scale, I am really really missing Kam, the new lady pathologist, for me, just doesnt fit, i mean why in the heck would Winter want to hang around with his boss and his wife on his time off, unless there was a pretty lady his own age to be around. This was particularly evident in the Ghost of Causton Abbey, Winter spending his day off walking around the ruins of an old monastery with Barnaby, Mrs. Barnaby and the pathologist who is twice his age, I know reality is suspended but this is just a bit ridiculous.

I have to say this is the most enjoyable episode I've watched in ages. They really got this one spot on, it was a hark back to the early days of Tom Barnaby and Troy, a good solid cast, viable murders, a good setting, solid characters and beautiful countryside. The episode was certainly helped by the welcome return of Jones who is now a DI and working undercover. I would like to declare here now that Jason Hughes (Jones) should be the next James Bond, a brilliant actor with a great screen presence. He certainly adds a lot to this episode and works well with the current DS, Winter to whom he bares a lot of resemblance. I found it very difficult to spot the killer although I had my suspicions... a couple of story lines ran parallel and intertwined nicely to give a solid ending. It would actually add so much to the show if Jones could have the odd appearance as it adds a total new dimension to the Barnaby and sidekick element. Not many negatives apart from how a frail old lady could have carried out the second killing (Barnaby even referenced it would have taken strength to carry it out) or how she could have the athletic ability to carry Jones in a wheel barrow, they also alluded to the old characteristics of Jones showing him to not exactly be the sharpest tool in the shed as he never noticed he was living under the same roof as the killer to the killers great surprise! Also when Jones dropped his phone the incoming call said "Barnaby" but having also worked under Tom Barnaby whom he would also have had his number, the name on the phone screen should have read "John Barnaby" however i'm just being pedantic. A magnificent episode wrapped up nicely, well done to the team, Winter is settling in nicely, plenty of scenes including Kam, (eye candy for the guys!) and Paddy is a great addition after the sad demise of Skykes (I was glad it was mentioned by Jones). I am really enjoying this new series.
Midsomer Murders: The Village That Rose from the Dead (2016)
Murder and Plotting in an army abandoned village
I rather enjoyed this recent installment of Midsomer. A new DS in town and I think he fits in well with the show, unfortunately Sykes is with us no longer. The new DS gets sharply brought into line by Barnaby who likes to maintain the hierarchy but you sense the two will get along just fine. The new DS is known to Kam the pathologist, despite the fact that its a bit odd the local pathologist and a DS hanging around the Inspectors house outside of work, nonetheless its shaping up to be a good gang! The plot was good old fashioned Midsomer, a bunch of locals all intertwined, however in this instance it take a bit of figuring out trying to decipher who is related to whom, sometimes a little close for comfort... Some well known faces in this one and its virtually impossible to figure out the culprit but a plausible motive all the same. An enjoyable episode.
Midsomer Murders: Dark Secrets (2011)
A little too close for comfort

I think the new DCI Barnaby has settled in marvelously and Jones is brilliant as ever, funny. I love the addition of Sykes the dog!
Regarding this episode, it was decent, but there seems to be a bit of an obsession with incent among the midsommer writers, its not the first time it has popped up, is it a way of depicting what really goes on among these recluse dysfunctional toffs or just pure fantasy?
With these people, from the outside, it always seems rosey, wealth, success property etc however deep beneath it all, there are always dark secrets...
Aside from that, I always enjoy the scenery and the interactions between barnaby and jones, an enjoyable two hours spent
Midsomer Murders: Let Us Prey (2014)
Let us Prey...and enjoy
May contain spoilers...Another enjoyable episode with the new Barnaby, testament to great writing and acting that the new Inspector has fitted in flawlessly into the whole Midsomer murders thing. I like the fact that he is different from his predecessor in manner but very similar in his work, his new sergeant is good and well played by the actor but i still miss jones, plus i don't think his casual attire fits in well with the series. In terms of this episode, it was good, enjoyable but the motive behind killing 3 people is a little bit beyond even a phsyco let alone the eventual killer... also i've noticed that midsomer murders go out of their way to vilify the religious and something i found disappointing in this episode was that there were two opposing religious people in this episode, you would be rooting for the obvious but as it turns out neither are good decent people as you would expect from religious types, then again maybe midsomer murders are only projecting the reality of what these religious types are, money hungry, think they are above the law, preach one thing, do the complete opposite, hide behind the collar... but how can you not like midsomer murders, the lovely scenery, the great acting and I love the addition of Sykes the dog! I hope it lasts for many more years
