Carrie (2002)
Hidden gem, better than the '76 version
I watched this movie out of curiosity, as I loved the book and had read it for about the third time recently. Having seen the 76 version and being a bit disappointed, I was curious to see what this was like.
The movie is completely faithful to the book and all the better for it....with the exception of the very end which looks like it was intended to promote a spin off series.
I can only recommend that people see it, I know there is another remake due in 2013, but that looks like it is financially driven in terms of making good box office returns. The 2002 version is as near to the book as I guess you are going to get. Recommended.
Angela Bettis was excellent in the lead role.
9/10
Modern Family (2009)
Funny, warm and engaging
This really is one of the best comedies to come out of the States for years. The multi-faceted family are characterised in a realistic, believable and best of all very funny manner.
From the dysfunctional Clare, Phil and kids, through Grandpa, his new wife and son to Mitchell and Cameron with their newly adopted baby, every scene is well acted and nuanced. The acting is all first rate and congratulations to whoever cast the show, as they are all perfect for their role.
I sincerely hope a second and third series follow.
Ed O'Neill is excellent as the grumpy head of the family and he has created another much more likable character than his role in Married with Children. He really is funny, sincere and touchingly warm through to grouchy and bad tempered. He is hilariously homophobic around Mitchell and Cameron, creating some of the best laughs of the show.
All in all a great series and my family was hooked from the pilot episode.
Watch it!!
100 Feet (2008)
Not a good use of my time!
I really wanted to enjoy this film, but try as I might I couldn't find anything to endear me to it. Wooden acting, lack of depth to all of the characters, gaping plot holes, poor special effects and laughable direction made this one of the poorest movies I have seen in ages.
Famke Janssen is a great actress who usually brings depth and enthusiasm to her roles but her performance throughout the movies seems to lack effort and she seems permanently embarrassed and uncomfortable.
The actor playing her dead husbands partner (Bobby Cannavale) looks the part, but also doesn't seem happy in the role, or committed to the part.
The movies relies on tried and tested means of scaring the audience, which unfortunately fail as we have seen them all before.
Not recommended.
The Pacifier (2005)
One of the worst movies I have ever seen.......................EVER!
It's not often that I don't persevere to the end of any movie, but this is the most grindingly awful dollop of rubbish ever served up as entertainment.
Vin Diesel is dreadful in most of his movies, but I could not bear to watch him in this drivel.
The plot is thin, and totally predictable.
All of the cast look uncomfortable and slightly embarrassed by the whole thing, except Diesel who woodenly performs throughout.
Vin Diesels only redeeming factor in any movie is that he looks the part in an action movie, however, this was a poorly though out attempt to get him into comedy roles.
Stick with the action movie's, Vin, and try and sign up for non speaking parts, like Arnie!
It didn't even keep my kids amused.
AVOID at all costs!
