Interview with the Vampire (2022)
A beautifully crafted series for the 20th/21st century
I am the same age as Kirsten Dunst, so I wasn't born when the novel was released and was 11 when the original movie came out. I loved it instantly and ran out to buy the books. I devoured the entire series growing up, right up until recently. A huge fan of Anne's other work, so I'll passionately disagree with those claiming fans of the original will hate this series.
A direct remake of the movie isn't required. If you love that, read/watch it. If you like, perhaps you could see the characters as a deeper study, exploring other concepts, that only add to the experience of the Vampire Chronicles. They aren't how you would expect, but each actor has respected the characteristics of the original movie's actors. There are nods to each in their mannerisms.
Certain themes have been handled head-on here, where they were never considered, and almost completely ignored in the 90s. The relationship between Louis and Lestat, and for me, an interesting take on Claudia. Perhaps the change in Louis is the most surprising, but certainly the most interesting, and I'm glad they did because it allowed many further questions to be asked and explored.
This series takes absolutely nothing from the original. I find it short sighted if you do and as a fan, I feel the restrictions in the past were likely put right here.
I think this was beautifully made and thoroughly looking forward to series two. If you're a 'purist' then perhaps you shouldn't watch anything other than your beloved originals. I believe this has brought the wonderful Anne Rice a new generation of fans and for me, it's only right that she should live on for an eternity in her legacy.
Phoenix Rising (2022)
An animated, elaborate hit piece
Not only has it come to light that Ashley Morgan Smithline been coerced into lying for these people, but Esme Bianco, Illma Gore and Evan have managed to create a baseless story, pieced together with the help of the once-credible Amy Berg, to create a film that strongly relies on the audience's response to the #metoo movement.
There will be a strong percentage of survivors who watch this and believe it, based on emotion and personal experience. Some may remember the 90s and even fear Manson, based on his excessive stage presence and reputation, his ghostwritten book, and media campaigns to project him into superstardom. Stage presences aren't real, and neither is this. Phoenix Rising is designed to play with your emotions. I have been paying close attention since the accusations against this man were put against him and nothing ever made sense. It's only coming out now, with legal documentation to back up the falsehoods, proving there was never an FBI investigation. Everything you see is a lie.
Phoebe Bridgers was never at a party, but went with her friend's parents to see Manson, because she was a fan. The meeting was in regard to Manson being on Sons of Anarchy. The parents of her friend Jackson White are Katey Sagal & Kurt Sutter. His description of the specific room he is accused of talking about, would have been at a casual business meeting. This was the basis for a large part of this whole story.
More and more information is being released, and while Evan is ever the victim, the true target here, is a man who has long been used as a scapegoat. I am a balanced person, who doesn't take anything at face value.
As a woman and survivor of abuse, inflicted on my by my own narcissistic and violent mother, I would suggest any survivors view this with a sceptical eye. Women lie too and do it well.
I am so disappointed and disgusted to see Amy Berg behind this. I assumed she was someone she clearly isn't, and her part will forever change the way I see her work; unreliable, poorly researched and an elaborate hit piece. I'm deeply saddened to say this, but I could never trust her again.
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
This film gives me hope...
If this can be made, as tragic as it is, it gives me hope that all seasoned horror fans (or not) could write better. Someone was definitely drunk on the job when this was approved.
This was a turkey and a half. The 'tribute' to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a load of rubbish, the characters had no depth, there was little to no character development, what there was of a story fell apart at the beginning and it just had no substance whatsoever. I won't spoil it, just in case you are a glutton for punishment, but I don't tend to choose 10 star films. Most of the horror movies I've loved the most were low on score, but this doesn't even deserve one for effort. You'll watch it anyway, but don't say I, or the rest of the reviewers here didn't warn you.
Corbin Nash (2018)
So bad, it went past bad and went back to bad again.
Rebecca: "This party is so bad it's almost good."
Enid: "It's so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again."
This was never even remotely close to good and if there's ever a chance of it being a Cult classic, it will be the opinion of a very small group of misguided individuals, with a loose grasp of what it actually takes to be honoured with that title. The plot was painfully slow, with very little background or direction. The main character was as dull as dishwater and Corey Feldman's performance was so desperate, it was extremely embarrassing to witness. Half-baked Buffalo Bill, combined with a $2 drag queen and just a pinch of wannabe delusional is not exactly award-winning, but I respect the fact that nobody wants to win awards, here. That's admirable at least. What happened to that guy? The 80's are long gone, as are his chances of ever being a decent actor again. McDowel and Hauer must have been compensated heavily for this and it's bewildering as to how they were lured into this. I watched Butcher's Block with Hauer recently and loved it. You can't win them all, I guess.
If you like poorly written, cringeworthy, badly acted moves, with no direction, that bares a very poor resemblance to films you may have seen in the past, then go for it. I have forgiven some awful movies in my time and defended some serious turkeys, but this, my friend is not worth the bother. Do your taxes, cut your toenails, go and see that relative you hate - anything but this to pass the time. I challenge you to get to the 40 minute mark without falling asleep or turning to the person you're watching it with and not contort your face. If you do, take a shot each time one of you does and you'll be sorted (at least numb) until the end. Let's get something positive out of this.
- and to those who gave this trash 10 stars, I hope you did something nice with the cash. Your acting ability far ought-weighs anything seen here.
