Happiness for Beginners (2023)
Unlikeable cringy female lead character
The premise sounded light and entertaining; I was hoping for cute and funny but instead the female lead character and the hiking guide are such unlikeable characters that the story line becomes secondary to the ick factor.
Unfortunately there is zero chemistry between the male and female lead. The male lead does a good job and is a sweet portrayal but in no world would he be hung up on the griping whiny unappealing female lead. Also it gets really stupid when serious issues are briefly touched on. This movie tries to reach and fails to attain. The casting of Ellie Kemper was a total misfit. Gus Burney is the standout and she's a pleasure to watch in her oddball role.
The scenery is beautiful. The script isn't.
You Again (2010)
Awful
How can you go wrong with this cast? With this script. You may consider watching it for the astonishment factor of "how bad can it be?", but I recommend you resist. It's really bad.
All Nighter (2017)
Cute, light viewing
Very pleasant movie. Fun enough to be worth watching. Nice cast. Clearly meant for Jack Black and it would've been a box office hit in that case, but enjoyable, light fare nonetheless.
Zero Effect (1998)
Bill Pullman is terrific in this, but....
The first half of the script needs a rewrite and the rest of it is engaging but not top shelf. I can't say that I can recommend this movie other than that Bill Pullman's acting is fantastic in it and the only thing that made the movie worth watching.
The Trip to Greece (2020)
Neither travel show nor comedy
Maybe I should have been expecting something else? The first 20 minutes were terrible and that's all I could stand. One man denigrating the other nonstop, barely any commentary on their amazing surroundings, and negative at that. I've been to Greece and would've been mortified to be anywhere near these rude visitors.
Interstellar (2014)
Mostly Slow, Confusing Jumble
I thought this movie would be great; the plot sounded fun and intriguing, but this movie falls far short of being fleshed out. Most of the movie was slow, with a lot of quiet dialogue on very complex concepts. It was also unclear how some characters fit in ... the female astronaut is in love with who back home? Have we been introduced to this guy? Do we care? Huge jumps in storyline were glossed over: daughter Murph invented the orbiting earthlike station which saved humanity? What? And the 2001: A Space Odyssey bent near the end is overwhelmingly derivative. Overall, it seems like there must be way too much of this screenplay that fell by the wayside somewhere.
