Civil War (2024)
Meaningless and pointless
Dont know where to start and that is because the story has no begining no middle and no end. A civil war is going on but we dont know why and which side is doing what for what reason. A group of people are reporters and that seems to be the only thing in their lives. To whom they are reporting we dont know and what significance it has if any. They go on a journey to Washington to interview the president and risk their lives for it. We dont get to understand why is that so important. We do get a dose of lesbian relationship, badass women in main roles, diversity cast which are good and the bad guys who are, you guessed it, all white males. In the end the group (mostly) reaches the president together with a rebel front team of the rebel army and enter the White House where everyone inside is shot at site as if in a death squad raid. Finally, the president is captured and also shot at site by a group of plain soldiers which doesnt make any sense just like the whole boring movie. The only good part is an episode with Jesse Plemons that reminded me a bit of "Come and See" and the only moment moment in the movie when you felt the horror of civil war (or any war). Dont understand why he took this episodic role. He was great though.
Cuvari formule (2023)
This is a big theme movie
This is a big theme movie and a big movie in itself. These kind of movies are difficult to make, particularly for smaller countries and cinematographies. I live in Croatia and our cinematography doesnt seem to capable produce a movie at this level. As I lived in Yugoslavia I had a special interest to go see it considering the thematic. But regardless of that, this is a movie worth seeing for anyone and congratulations to the team that did it. The acting was good, and Alexis Manenti playing dr. Mate was great. The costumes and scenography were great too. The environment of a hospital in the 50s was recreated exceptionally well. The rooms are basically empty, no equipment, and the doctors have little to work with and very limited possibilities. Everything that will be done will require the patient to endure a lot of pain. There were some moments that went a bit overboard though. Like the death of the young scientist Zivota. I also felt that the ending needed a bit more of...something.
Dopesick (2021)
Very good show
Unlike most, I watched Dopesick after watching Painkiller. The comments drove me to that as most commentators claimed Dopesick was much better. I wouldnt say much better, both shows are very good, Dopesick somewhat better thow. Although knowing the basic story already, I watched with great interest. What especially hit home was the part showing how FDA staff are benevolent towards Big Pharma as they look at them as potential employers. This is a problem in all state institutions that regulate private businesses. Financial regulators are typically in bed with the banks. One thing that wasnt though addressed enough in my opinion by the series is the role of the doctors. They are I would say at least equally guilty as Purdue pharma by prescribing such large quantities of a dangerously addictive substance. One commentator had the personal misfortune to be prescribed Oxycontine by his doctor. When he started feeling unwell and went back to his doctor he was just brushed away. This is also tyoical for doctors and should have had more emphasis. What was also great is showing how difficult addiction can be and that its not a thing of the weak minded. Its a very difficult problem where an individual needs help from multiple sides to get out: partner, family, psychiatry, medication. If one is missing, recovery may easily fail. Acting was overall very good. Michael Keaton is excellent, and this is coming from someone who generally finds Michael Keaton pretentious and irritating. Who was pretentious and irritating though was Rosario Dawson and her role. The only thing that I really, really didnt like in this series was the timeline going back and forth. This has for a while now, become a fad that is very common. I dont know what the directors and screenplayers think they are achieving with this. To me it spoils what Im watching in 90% of cases.
Painkiller (2023)
Good TV
I watched this mini series after watching the forth season of Manifest 828. In case you dont know, Manifest 828 is a series whose quality of filming, scenario and acting is at soap opera level. But it has a rating of 7.1 on Imdb. Surprisingly, Painkiller is just 7.5 despite being a way better piece of work. Well directed, well shot, keeps you interested. The acting is excellent, with a standout role from Matthew Broderick. There are some downsides like the ending that somehow seems to lack another episode or more explanation. The main downside though is the incredibly irritating character of investigator Edie Flowers. (Uzo Aduba). Constantly rude and in "Im pissed off" mode. The kind of person you do not answer the door to. Disclaimer: I didnt watch Dopesick so I cannot be disappointed as others who watched it first seem to be.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
This has nothing to do with Dahls fabolous novel
I could nrver feel anything close to the feelings I had when reading the novel to this movie. Tottaly off. Mr. Fox was sincerely taking care of his family in the given circumstances. Goerge Clooney is showboating. The whole thing is of the novel totally. I was looking forward to it as it was the book I probanly read the most times in my life. Seven if not more. But I just cant stand watching more than half an hour of the movie. Unlovable deviation from the plot. If you hvent read the book yet, dont watch the movie. I am open for every persons chance.. I have yet to see a Wes Anderson movie with substance.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Brainless entertainment
Well thats what john wick movies are. If you find it fun to watch a lot of shooting and fighting these are your movies. I watched it with my teenage son. Went out of the theater twice during the movie to get some popcorn and a go to the toilet. Did it deliberatley during the fight scenes. Didnt feel like I missed anything. Wick rolling down the stairs reminded me of Neymar. How dumb and boring was that. Before that, he fell from a 5th floor to the street and got up without problem. Even my son found that to be too much. The New York Russians appear to be in a Catholic church. Baba Jaga they keep refering to is not the bogeyman. Its an old woman, thats what baba means. Something like a witch. But whatever. The good thing in the movie are some colorful protagonists. I cannot but think these people giving 10 stars have a vested interest to do so.
The Last of Us (2023)
Interesting watch but not excellent
Disclaimer: Never played the game.
I kept reading how great this series is and looked forward to it. I watched all of the episodes and I do not share the enthusiasm. It is an interesting watch, but its not top notch. Definitely not the 8.9 it currently has. It is great in terms of scenery and music. The events and plot though are lacking. In every episode I was annoyed by things that dont make sense. It starts with the infection spreading out but appears noone knows whats going on although helicopters are flying around, there is police and military. Cmon, wouldnt it be in the news? The infected "zombies" get shot and stabbed and sometimes they die and sometimes they dont. But we cant tell why, what hurts and kills them and what doesnt. Everyone has flashlights with fresh working batteries. Where do they get the batteries after 20 years? How do the infected stay alive since they are mindless? Shouldnt they all be dead after 20 years? Episode 9, the part where Joel shoots his way through the hospital was so unrealistic it really did look like a video game. Why do they keep going into towns and climbing on buildings? They know where they are heading, why not just pass through. So yeah, the series is an OK watch but no way is it 8.9.
Away (2020)
Space soap woke opera
Who was this show made for? People who like space stuff wanna see space stuff, not drama, people who like drama dont want space stuff. Then the woke cringy cliche stuff with Strong Woman, bad old white male, multi culti crew, the lgbt component, the British guy from Ghana that was so unreal with his accent, jewish faith, manirisms etc. Then the secret private cell phone calls from space.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Great moviw, but misunderstood
Fascinating to watch, camera, music, absolutely an experience that goes through you and absorbs you.
Most, who watched, and lauded the film, were fans of the Peter character.
In the end he watches his mom and father in law as they kiss and it seems like a happy end.
It is a moment of happiness, but what will happen later is far from that.
Without Phil, the ranch will be taken over, his brother will not be able to manage it.
They will have to sold out.
After solding out, the connection between Rose and George will wither, because for Rose he was a safe haven, not the man of her dreams.
Peter will go on in life with his personal ambiguity, but also with the conscience of driving a man to death. Will he be able to live with that, and be OK? Unlikely.
So whats my conclusion? This is a tough story, and like in life, its questionable who wins.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
No way is this more than 7,5 in any home
A few good periods, but a lot of boring ones as well as well as some silly, illogical plot moments. Benedict Cumberbatch a level above the others in acting. Zendaya her usual pretentious poser act.
Underwater (2020)
Dissapointing. No story.
If you were to miss the intro minutes to this film you would think you missed at least 30 minutes. Their is no story and character development. Immediately the underwater station starts collapsing and the protagonists go into survival mode. Nothing that happens from then on therefore has no meaning to the viewer and is therefore boring despite the thriller horror events. Many technical things are inconsistent with deep water pressure. Why do they walk around instead of be pulled through water by those machines that divers usually use? At the finale, she overloads the core to a quick explosion by three clicks, no safety mechanisms to override. Did the film really need the creatures? Why? It could have been a disaster survival movie. A dissapointing film that picked of Alien, Abyss and probably other movies. Kristen Stewart was the only good thing in the movie.
The Empty Man (2020)
Too long and boring
Blowing in a bottle conjures a supernatural entity, mass death doesnt alarm police and media, slow pace, protracted predictable scenes. Acting is okish.
The Intern (2015)
She is the centre of the universe
Thats what the film is about. And everyone should adapt their lives for her hapiness and success and be happy to do so. And thats what they do in the film. Its a 100% chick movie pampering to present female fantasies about life full of unrealistic characters. De Niro was interesting in the beginning but than he becomes the daddy who supports his special princess girl.
Old (2021)
Interesting idea gets worse as film progresses
In typical MNS style, an intriguing idea ends up as an not so great movie as the film progresses. The film has some thought provoking qualities. My favorite is when the group comes up with the hypothesis that slowly moving through the passage would get them out but they would age twenty years. They all decide not to. In life we often dont want to invest our time into something that is valuable. We rather continue our daily routine hoping for something better that never comes and life passes by.
But the bad in the film are plenty. Some are so bad they are funny. The "famous rapper" with a stage name Mid-Sized Sedan had me chuckling all the time. He isnt old when they arrive at the beach.
The kids grow in a day but also become wiser as if they experienced life.
One daughter has blue eyes as a child & teenager but brown as an adult.
The scene in the cave with Crystal going berserk is wtf. So is the operation of a melon sized tumor with a flip knife. If that can be survived, than why does anyone die from wounds? They take away the knife from the doctor but he later has it again while tje lady kills him with a rusty knife. Why does he have the knife? Why is one rusty and the other isnt?
And so on, and so on. The film lasts 1h 48 min. While it is interesting in the begining, the failed attempts to leave the beach, histeria and dialogue become repetitive and boring. At 1h 20min I was looking at my watch wondering how much more is left. In the end, the revelation is its a pharma company that uses the concept of fast time to find cures for illnesses faster. OK, intriguing idea, but again, testing on one subject? You can test nothing medical like that. 73 families disappear on holiday.
Some good camera work, some good and some bad acting, poor character build up. I gave it seven stars more than anything because of its originality. I like a good mystery and some fantasy as well.
Unknown (2011)
A mystery, very good acting, glaring plot holes
I liked the mystery of Liams lost identity but not how he went about it, or others. Many illogical actions and events. The plot finally unfolds as the uni professor Bressler being the assasination target. To kill a university professor you really would not need the whole very complicated scheme. Good acting from all mostly, particularly Bruno Ganz. Whose character again commits suicide against all reason.
Beforeigners (2019)
10 stars this show is not
The premise is interesting but there are often slow parts and there is also an annoying ideological agenda present (as one commentator put it, obviously a delighted follower of the ideology, the main female character is "a feminist icon").
The Irishman (2019)
Epic with some shortcomings
The movie takes us through a 40 year period in which the life of the mafia intertwines with major historical events. In the begining it seems like a patchwork of previous famous movies of the genre, but that feeling gradually goes away and it becomes a great epic and thats how you feel after watching it. I didnt mind it being long because I watched it on Netflix in sequels. It does have some shortcomings though. The de-aging cgi is not convincing and you constantly have a feeling the characters are too old for who they represent. Especially when Pescis character calls DeNiros character "kid".
F9 (2021)
Mostly boring and dumb, occasionaly funny
Pile after pile of unrealistic action scenes and cliche dialogs for over two hours. Moment I enjoyed most was the space car and the diver astronaut suits. Because it was ridiculous like the rest of the movie but without the cringy/boring serious tone.
Ex Machina (2014)
Clever movie with an excellent brave ending
Yes, there are many questions one could ask about the story and events in this movie where things dont make sense. Yes, the tech mogul genius Jay is over the top. But the overall story, tone and idea of the movie are excellent. My favourite parts:
1) The psychological strangeness of the situation starts having an effect on Caleb. He suspects he might be a robot. He then tries to take off part of his skin to see whats underneath. Turns out he is just human. That was a good outcome for the story, if he did turn out to be AI it would be a "meh" moment.
2) Best part of the movie, the ending. Jay wanted to create an AI that truly behaves like a real human, in this case a human female. And she exactly does behave like a real life female. She sees Caleb has the hots for her. She then uses her sexual appeal to get him doing things she needs, making him believe they are in this together. Once she got what she needed, she doesnt care for him anymore, goes away and leaves him to rot.
Most authors would not have the bravery to tell such a story and would instead go for some some apologetic "women are great" ending in line with the current political agenda (women are good, men are bad).
The Tomorrow War (2021)
I like SF, but this is just too dumb
No logic, no charachter. Plus the standard nowdays ideological propaganda. I rarely dont watch a movie till the end, but this was just rubbish. So I stopped watching it but couldnt sleep. So I decided to continue and it just went from bad to worse. Strang to see some A level actors in this C level movie.
Apocalypto (2006)
Great movie despite some questions
Unique film with surreal atmosphere at times. What I didnt like were some moments from Jaguars Paw chase. How can he outrun a black panther? How can they find him in the woods at night? How does he do iron man performances despit an arrow going through his body?
Predator (1987)
Still great entertainment
Every five years I end up watching this movie and its always fun. A classic.
Nomadland (2020)
Not for young people and not for an Oscar
This is a nice movie with some touching moments. But it cannot be comprehended by people who have most of their life still ahead of them. I would say you have to be at least 45 years old to understand it, or better yet, feel it.
The movie is somewhat slow, of an artistic kind, and I would expect it to win best film award on various festivals but not to win the Oscar for best film despite its Americana theme. Frances McDormand got a lot of praise for the role but I would say its a kind of generic role for her. In a way similar to Three Billboards.
What I didnt like is that its not realistic. Mostly everyone and everything is nice and philosophical while in reality the world is filled with greedy, selfish, cruel, violent, shallow, addicted, unhappy, etc. People all around us. Also, the life of someone without means is difficult and unpleasant in many aspects.
The Expanse: Oyedeng (2021)
The Naomi part is annoying plus boring
Gave it 4 stars for the non-Naomi part. The Naomi part is the missing 6. Annoying plus boring. No consistency, you dont know which relationship and character is worse (from a film point of view). Marco Inaros with his pretty face and prettier hair is beyond belief. Naomi jumping through space ship to ship with no suit is the grand finale of nonsense. Avarsavala and her fake cursing was the most annoying thing in the series but this episodes boredom topped it.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
A SF with a personal story
Hi, if you havent seen this film, dont waste your time. If you like a survival story, its ridiculous. You have a man swimming in Arctic seas as if he is in the Mediterranean, mind you he was barely alive dying from some illness (cancer?) before. If you are into drama, you have a man seeing visions of his wife although they had no meaningful relationship. If youre into SF, you have people communicating across space in 2049 like radio amateurs from the 70s. There is a specially trained women and captain, on a planet saving mission who conceive a child (cmon, even teens can avoid that most of the time) and talk casually about it in her high pregnancy. In terms of imposing "diversity" standards, he is black and she is white. But thats the least of the problems with that, its just so artificial. There is so much more but this movie is a waste of time so I dont wont to waste any of mine as well. Steer clear.
