The Greatest Night in Pop (2024)
Absolute Garbage
A very very poor rip off of Band Aid 'Do they know it's Christmas'
Self gratifying nonsense where a bunch of American singers praise themselves for coming up with an idea.
This film highlights the fact that they weren't motivated to help with famine aid at all, they were annoyed because the UK thought of the idea first and they wanted a piece of the pie.
If you want to watch American artists congratulating themselves for quite frankly a substandard song then this may be the film for you.
If Lionel Ritchie name drops Quincy Jones once, he must do it a thousand times and that basically sums it all up.
Arrogant performers name dropping one another and wanting pats on the back.
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)
What was the point
Being a lover of the story, I watched with excitement but was left disappointed. There are that many versions of this great tale now that anything new, needs something out of the ordinary, this didn't. They changed characters names needlessly and added characters in that didn't need to be there including a dog that served no purpose. The songs were boring and I was left thinking, what was the point in that? The animation had a makeshift Disney feel about it and the characters had nothing you felt you could connect with, Scrooge himself was almost neutral throughout so there was no great transformation as per the story. Wouldn't recommend.
The Sister (2020)
Bit of a let down
It's a shame really that this wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I liked the idea and the overall plot but it was a really weak cast or just the wrong cast. I never felt sorry for Nathan at all, in fact I was routing for him to fail in the end which I'm not sure was the writers idea. Unfortunately you could not empathise at all with anyone. Good idea, poorly executed.
Onward (2020)
Right Up My Street
From reading other reviews, it's become pretty clear that this movie has split opinion(as many movies do). I have two sons and this fantasy genre is something I've always enjoyed so maybe that's why I enjoyed the film so much, as did my sons. Perhaps if the genre isn't your cup of tea, then you won't be so keen.
I felt it was funny in all the right moments and heartfelt in all the right moments too, it hit the balance between the two pretty well in my eyes.
This movie was right up my street hence the high rating but I totally understand those who aren't so sure!!
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Just Awful
Do you remember all the things that made Black Mirror so good? The clever twists, the fantastic acting and thought provoking plots? Well unfortunately they're all gone in this latest series but mainly this episode. There was nothing about it that ticked any of those boxes. My thinking is that the general theme was something along the lines of pop stars being under the control of their agents/management team and not having enough creative control themselves?? It played out like a child's film and should be avoided at all costs.
After Life (2019)
Inspiring
At the risk of seeming over dramatic, I found this massively inspiring! As someone who has struggled with depression, I can honestly say, this series helped me like no book, website or medication ever has. If nothing else it taught me to be kind again to myself and others and to do it for no reason at all other than to make that person feel better. Kindness for kindness sake is underrated and under used. Lovely series, one of the best Gervais has written.
The Meg (2018)
Avoid
My expectation of this movie was pretty low it must be said but with that in mind, I thought it may be an easy watch which I wouldn't have to concentrate too much on. It turned out to be painful to watch and poorly acted. Unfortunately the main issue was Jason Statham, his performance was terrible, he is far more suited to London gangster type movies, I couldn't figure out what accent he was supposed to have, as far as I could tell he was from either London, USA, South Africa or Australia!!! The rest of the acting was awful, it had the usual shark jumps but other than that I'd advise that this film is avoided.
