Noruwei no mori (2010)
If you loved the book, you'll hate this movie.
Norwegian Wood is one of my favorite novels but i held out watching the movie because i never like film adaptations except for a few ones like fight club, perks of being a wallflower etc. This movie was pretty bad, it looked like it was made a bunch of high school students. The acting was bad, the pacing was bad and everything just felt off. The only thing they got right were the outfits and how the characters looked like, it's how i visualized them in the book as well. It also had some nice shots of the locations. I know this book so much by heart and they left out some critical parts like Reiko's experience of rape as a child, while spending too long on the sex scenes and meaningless dialogue. I read most of of the positive reviews of this movie came from the ones who didn't read the book, if i were you please read the book. It was a hell of an experience.
Through Night and Day (2018)
I don't get the hype.
"Through Night and Day" is a love story with a very predictable ending. The movie was well made and had good shots of Iceland but the plot and script didn't do it for me and were way too shallow. At just 1 hour and 40 mins, i still felt kinda bored and just started using my phone but i still predicted what would happen. Netflix's recent local releases: "Untrue" and "Sunod" are better than this.
Sunod (2019)
how local films should be made
Watched this on netflix, didnt expect much but wow. this movie doesn't use much jump scares but the cinematography and music are amazing which give the movie a creepy vibe all through out. the story is pretty ordinary compared to other horror movies but the last 30 minutes was very well done. the ending left me shocked in a good way, this is what philippine cinema can be if given the chance.
Itaewon Keullasseu (2020)
Great start, build up, plot, and values but falls flat in the end
This show was really good i'd say for the first ten episodes, even up until the episode where they won the cooking show. The show then started to go south when it went from that to 4 years later, it got predictable and the storyline felt old and re-used. It had been 4 years yet they were still talking about the same issues, especially the love triangle with the boss. Episode 15 in particular was a snooze fest showing flashback after flashback and too much scenes of him in heaven with his dad. Overall, i'd still give this a 7 because the ending episode wasn't bad and i was highly entertained especially at the start and middle portions of the show, i also like the values and beliefs they were showing such as discrimination and sticking to one's principles.
Marley & Me (2008)
heartwarming and touching: not a simple "man and his dog" film
First off, i know this review is very very late as this movie came out during Christmas Eve of 2008, but i heard a lot of good reviews of this movie in the past and i never really gave it a chance as i thought the plot wasn't interesting at all, or at least that's how they showed it in the trailer, But knowing this movie had A-list actors in Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, i knew i was wrong.
It actually had a very simple plot with newly wed couple John (Wilson) and Jennifer (Aniston) are wanting to start a family, so in order to prepare themselves they get a puppy who will then become "the world's worst dog" in "Marley" although, no matter the hardships Marley has given the Grogans, the film still captures this in a very sweet way. The film spans 15 years until the time John and Jen already have 3 kids and Marley grows from a puppy to a really big dog, as time flies Marley gets more and more mature, Marley was there when Jen needed her while John wasn't, Marley was always there when the kids came home from school. The film shows that even if pets can be a drag with their barking and all, they will leave a deep mark in your life and the sorrow you will get when it passes away is unsustainable.
Wilson added a different spin to his role making him a very down to earth husband and plays it well, his acting in the last few scenes maybe some of his best work. On the other hand Aniston was beautiful as expected, but in my opinion she really stepped it up in this movie. I've been a big fan of her since "Friends" and her previous movies but she nailed her emotions on this one.
Overall, this film had comedy, drama, romance making it a quality family movie with great acting. I recommend this movie to anyone but especially to the dog lovers and newly weds, you will get a lot from this movie, but also don't forget to have your tissue as you will probably need it.
