Hysterical Blindness (2002 TV Movie)

Hardly...

A played-down, but still gritty and mostly honest look at how women 'survive' our male oriented, female knee-bending society. Gena Rowlands is the light in this film as the matriarch figure to 3 girls. Her own, Deby (Thurman) and Deby's best friend, Beth (Lewis) and her daughter, Amber. Gena finds love late in life only to discover she waited too long for Nick (played tenderly by Ben Gazarra), nice guy, Deby can't stand. (Read jealous) Beth becomes attracted to and sort of involved with the bartender at the local (read dead) bar. Deby picks up reluctant Rick at same bar and invents a possible future with him to all her girlfriends, whose constant pressure of questions concerning their imminent "engagement" threatens Deby's sanity and self esteem. It seems her Dad left her and her Mom early on and took with him her budding confidence. As the girls struggle with Life issues they discover their greatest strength lay in their own closeness, no matter how vulnerable that also makes them to each other.

Languid and haunting...

Slow, moody, harsh, honest, beautiful, brilliant. I wanted to stop at these words, but the guidelines insist on being a bit more verbose which I personally feel will take away from the original drama meant by my first lines. But to satisfy the "rules" I go on. I think our man Pete here did a bang up job directing this period piece of a time in American history when we lived close to the land and even closer to people we bond to, (wives vs. best buds). Enuf said!

Warning: Spoilers
horribly acted, mess of of a film. SPOILER ALERT: the so-called twist is more of a trick then anything else, that the orphan (Frances) and the Mother (Maddy) had lust for each other from the get go, which is poorly drawn at best in the beginnings of the movie so that the ending (and I mean the last 5 minutes of the movie) finally comes to a morally disgusting head with the two leads dancing in front of the townsfolk at a wedding and then getting married themselves. And suddenly this town who hated on Frances from the start now accepts the two as a couple.(?) When a 6 year old child is raised by a 20 year old Mother, even though not related, it is still incest, I don't care how old you get. Marriage does not change that.

Warning: Spoilers
so, this may seem to some a biased review, but the theme of the movie and its' execution was brilliant to me. Never been a fan of Josh Brolin, but now I am blown away by his acting chops in this. His Dad should be proud. This movie is totally unique and given the fact that the original is of Asian extraction I can say a "thank you" to the makers for this English remake so that I may watch (and appreciate) such amazing content and "get it". This films unique character has left me breathless and I know that no other film will come close to satisfying me in the same way for a long, long time. KUDOS! Job well done!!
