The Nevers (2021)
I feel like I've seen this before...
Someone told me I would like this show. I am only an episode and a half in and already bored.
I have no problem with the era and place. I am even okay with the "girl power" type theme for the show. What I am having an issue with are the two main characters.
These women are boring me to death. They are written like over the top Mary Sue Clichés. Especially the one with the black hair. She has special powers to get glimpses into the future AND can leap off of tall buildings and beat everyone up like some superhero? She's written as this tough and clever character, but she's completely reckless with no afterthought. Like everything she does is written to always be in her favor.
I am going to keep trying in hopes it gets better.
Titans (2018)
I love it, but..
I came in to the show with zero expectations. I didn't want to try and compare it to Teen Titans and I know a lot of these DC shows change the story up a little so it doesn't always follow along with the original story. Taking all that away, it allowed me to enjoy it for what it was. I love all the characters, Starfire being my favorite. Though, the actress who plays Dove/Dawn should be replaced. The baby whispering she does along with the mary sue type personality (Which I figure they add that since everyone else has that conflicting personalities) it gets annoying and boring. I ended up skipping all of her scenes. The CGI could be a little better. Was a little horrified when Trigon showed up. There's still a lot of character development to be done so I didn't expect them to throw everything at us in the first season. I wish they hadn't cast Bruce Wayne/Batman and let him stay a shadow character like some of the others. Otherwise, i'm excited for Season 3
Ratched (2020)
It was confusing, but still enjoyed watching it
I actually loved the show. I liked the characters and how colorful the visuals were. I was not a fan of the love story. It was like they made nurse Ratched to be an evil/bad character in the beginning, but then smoothed her out and gave her a love story in the end. For me, the love story wasn't necessary. I watched the show for entertainment and not to be too critical and point out every flaw and I was entertained.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
It was still good.
I started watching the show expecting horror because that's what the ads suggested? And a lot of the actors in this were also in the haunting of hill house. It did have it's creepy moments, but all that went away once the stories of the ghosts were told. Plus, I'm not a fan of child actors. The boy was great, but the girl was a little annoying for me. I suggest not starting this show with high expectations of a horror movie, but the story is pretty enjoyable.
Lovecraft Country (2020)
This show isn't for everyone.
I absolutely love the show. I'm debating if a second season would be worth it because it could really either be as great or a major let down. I love sci-fi and black history and to have them both together was such a dream. I'm also upset that books like these exist and I've never been introduced to them or not given a hint that they exist. I admit it gets hard to follow in the beginning because there's so much to take in, but it all comes together in the end. There are no filler episodes and every episode has a meaning. The bad reviews seem to be the same and the show probably just wasn't for them. But, it was definitely for me.
S.W.A.T. (2017)
Its okay except...
I love cop/crime/detective shows and I can tolerate this, but its the SWAT doing the investigating like they were detectives that gets me. I know there are other elements in the show that they put in for drama and eye candy, but thats the one thing that bothers me. Yes, there's bad acting. Yes, Shemar Moore has never been a good actor. If they mixed it with SWAT and detectives, that I can tolerate more... but having the brute force run around solving crimes doesn't make sense.
Nip/Tuck (2003)
Love this show!!!! Except...
Binge watching it on Hulu. I remember as a kid seeing the commercials for it, but it never really caught my interest. Now, I've been binge watching it and completely hooked on the show. I love the dramas. I love the characters. The clichés I can tolerate... I cannot tolerate the bad acting. Not all of them have bad acting but a few stand out like a tall tree in a field of dead grass. The facial expressions are over exaggerated. But, the stories have hooked me in enough that I push through it.
Home by Christmas (2006)
Lacking realism for a "drama" movie
A very light light LIGHT LIGHT fan service fantasy type story.
The main character continues to make stupid decisions and moves through life as if she has no experience in ANYTHING even for a woman her age. Doesn't know how life works outside of a book club. Only accepting 25k and the car, letting her husband keep everything AFTER HE CHEATED and not taking advantage of the ALIMONY SHE IS OWED.. The daughter is nothing but a brat, making things worse. They make light of homelessness as if it's easy and carefree. If homeless people can just walk in a open house for the food, there'd be a big problem. The realtor would have picked up on that really fast. Has the typical token black friend who helps the white friend more than she helps her own sorry situation. A VERY unrealistic love at first sight meeting. I was hoping more for Linda's character's personality that she wasn't so damn passive and forgiving. The only drama was her finding out her husband cheated.
Linda's acting felt forced and unrealistic.
Whoever wrote this story has no sense of reality.
Steven Universe (2013)
A good show, but still waiting.
It's a very good show. I like some of the characters and the lore with the Gems. I admit when it does come on, I can get glued to the TV and watch with excitement... but there's a lot about the show that is very problematic for me.
The scheduling is horrible. It isn't a daily or weekly show like we are all used to. The episodes come I guess whenever the creators feel like doing it. So hard to keep up with a show that randomly puts out episodes.
Filler episodes. There are more filler episodes than story progression episodes. I can understand why if they are trying to stretch it out to keep the show going longer, but the filler episodes aren't even that good with each episode only being 11 minutes long. AND new episodes don't pop up enough FOR there to be filler episodes. I love learning more about the Gems and their history and Steven and what may happen to him.
Women are superior to men concept. All of the women on the show seem to have a higher intelligence, stronger, independent and full of common sense than the men. Not just the Gems, but the humans also. The men seem to be lesser than in every aspect which bothers me. It's like watching those cartoons or commercials where the dad is clumsy or an idiot and the mom is perfect and poise with wisdom. The men aren't taken seriously and they should be just as much as the women. Steven is the only male that anyone can take serious, but he's more feminine and way more sentimental than someone who's supposed to help save the planet from an alien invasion.
The hinted lesbian relationships don't bother me at all especially since I see more male/male relationships in other TV shows (yes I know it's for children) With the shows I grew up watching as a child, this cartoon doesn't really force feed the taboo subject to kids. I think it's children seeing everyone love each other no matter who they are. It does give positive messages and can be very light hearted and funny.
Despite my issues with the show, I'll still be watching whenever a new episodes finally airs.
