All About Steve (2009)
Eccentric, but lovely
The film starts with a crossword puzzler who reads a lot and, also, talks a lot. Appearing maniac, she's always upbeat, decent and loves sharing information which is, to most people, irrelevant, nonsense, and useless.
I think annoyance is the feeling everyone will have when watching the movie. This girl is paranoid, she can't shut her mouth up! But you gotta admit that she's very pure and smart. Because of what the cameraman tells her, she believes that he's sincere and keeps following him around.
The story goes to an extreme when because of him, and one of his colleagues, the girl suffers from an accident. But from this moment, we've come to an awareness of how great this girl is. She deserves respect, not antipathy.
This is a beautiful story, though I gotta admit the chance for her to find a boyfriend is very slim.
Sandra Bullock is very clever, her action is always smooth as ever. Bradley Cooper is very handsome, ha ha.
Myeong-wang-song (2012)
Gloomy enough
This should be considered a serious topic. Korean education system, which is similar with ones seen in other countries, is pushing students to their limits. Mental problems, even suicide, and unfair competition are mentioned in many films and TV series. The issue is more significant in Korea, where the gap between the rich and the poor is being extended.
The theme of the movie revolves around "Pluto", a small planet is not considered a planet owing to its small size and too far distance from the Sun. People will find June resembling the planet so much since he's poor and always sitting at the corner of the class. June is excellent, he's just not lucky enough to have a rich family.
I'm not the type enjoying too dark movies. Too much blood, too much tears, too much pain - that's not what I expect from a psychological thriller. Pluto is in a slow pace, capturing alternatively the present scenes and past scenes, and gradually reveals the dark curtain in education behind a famous high school. June, the central character, has been pushed to an extreme that he captures and threatens all the classmates who have killed Yujin.
The actors act very well, especially Da-wit Lee (Kim June). He must play both mental sides - weak and innocent, and dark and fearless. June possesses an abundant set of psychological features, and it's hard for a juvenile actor to play this role well; but Lee has successfully made it.
The crazy things in the movie will not make the audiences vomit. They don't haunt them, either. But as many Korean thrillers, they do leave a trace on people's mind.
Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho (2014)
Feeling beautiful
The movie has a familiar topic as seen in many recent LGBT movies, thanks to promotion campaigns for LGBT people and the more open social viewpoint. Thus, throughout the movie, people will experience a gentle feeling about life. No scandals, no climax, and just a lovely ending.
Stories about student's love often go this way. A new classmate of a boy falls in love with him, and they eventually get together. But it doesn't really mean that you only need to watch some beginning and some ending minutes.
The Way He Looks is more special because Leo is a juvenile blind boy who intensely seeks independence to prove that he's not inferior to those normal boys out there. Fate brings Gabriel close to him. No need for special events, just some daily activities at school, and they start to feel for each other. People will enjoy watching Gabriel accompanying his cute friend all the time, to find out that there are chances for them to express their feelings but nothing has been made.
The last scene when the boys stay together in Leo's room is so romantic. As mentioned, there are no special things put into the movie, but people will still love the way Gabriel asks Leo, the way Leo touches Gabriel's face and kisses him, the way the boys hug each other, and even their sounds of breathing. No sexual feelings, just a very pure sense of young love.
Neither of the boys are very handsome; however, their actions are extremely effective. They express no feminine behaviors, but people can still feel something distinguishable between the boys' roles in their relationship. The director has been so delicate that he deeply understands which kind of spices to mix into the film.
The remained feeling after the movie is a lightly impressive happiness. People will remember vaguely that this love is formed by a friendship, and the boys have overcome some small issues to reach to each other. They will love the boys' contribution to each other. Leo is blind, but his heart and his love are so bright.
Come non detto (2012)
A typical story but still lovely to watch
I've been watching some gay movies, some of them are about twink loves. Gay movies include no new topics but: a gay guy who (1) has a very close friend who is a girl desperately in love with the gay guy, (2) has a traditional family with conservative viewpoints about homosexual people, and (3) a desire to come out with the society yet remains skeptical about the outcome of this action.
In Come Non Detto, you see a young handsome funny enthusiastic responsible only son of an old-fashioned family in Italy who struggles with himself about telling their parents who he actually is. Among pieces of the present story, people are taken to past to understand how he was treated during high school, how he recognized himself as a gay guy, how he reached the secret gay community, how he met his first and also current Spanish lover, and how he has tried to inform his family. This guy is a good guy, for sure. But he has stood the pain for years.
The flavor in the film feels like a dish of Bolognese pasta. The characters are funny in an Italian way, the clothes are good, the scenes are beautiful and romantic, and eventually, when Mattia has taken all his courage to speak out, in several minutes of the scenes, people have been thrilled.
The actors and actresses are really nice, especially Josafat Vagni. Any gay guys would die to have such a lovely boyfriend with great virtues. His voice is attractive as well.
