The Dark Knight (2008)
Must see for all comic book movie fans
Before I saw this two days ago, people were telling me it was the best Batman movie ever. After I watched it, however, I found myself in disagreement with them - this was more than just the best Batman movie, this could be the best movie that DC studios has ever, or will ever produce.
Heath Ledger as the Joker is truly terrifying, much scarier than Loki or Ultron from the Avengers movies. Christian Bale exceeds as Batman, once again, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are also their usual brilliant selves.
This is a very dark film, and often scary, so watching it with children younger than twelve is not a good idea (though if they have seen Batman Begins and any of the recent Marvel movies, they should be okay). I will never get tired of Nolan's style (well....in the near future anyway) as the lighting and music also plays a part in how the movie comes across.
In conclusion, if you haven't seen this yet, then please do, you won't regret it.
Mr. Holmes (2015)
One of the best movies I have seen in a while
No spoilers, I promise The first thing that struck me about this movie was how different it is to other adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. It is very far from Robert Downey Jr's interpretation, which I thought was very good. It is so similar to Conan Doyle's books (even with Watson's romanticised twists on things) that I would advise fans of the BBC's Sherlock to steer clear, as it is a very different Holmes to the one they love.
I would recommend this for a 10+ age group, as anyone younger may not understand the complex messages that are being conveyed - they also might find two scenes in particular too frightening.
Ian McKellen is an outstanding actor, and this performance shows it. He is engaging throughout the entire run time and provides us with some very touching moments that leave us thinking long and hard. The story is very intriguing, and the ending very satisfying, even if it is a little heart-breaking.
I conclusion, I suggest you go and see this film if you are a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
I loved this movie - still not sure if it is better than the first though
I will try to keep spoilers to a minimum.
Yeah, this movie is great. I try to go into every movie with an open mind - this time was no different. I could tell from the first scene what kind of movie this was going to be, and I loved it. There is great drama, great action (of course) and amazing characters (including two new ones). There seems to be a lot more of our heroes using their individual abilities than in the first movie, which was nice to see. I wasn't really a fan of Hawkeye's story, nor the romance between Natasha and Bruce, but in no way did that ruin the experience. I have to say though, Ultron was built up to be this menacing horror movie type villain, but actually, he made me laugh. He is just as funny and even light-hearted (sometimes) as Stark (obviously, being created by Stark) and his voice didn't scare me at all - it didn't quite seem to fit. Plus, Loki was better.
But anyway - great movie and I would definitely recommend it.
