The Toad (2019)
Surprisingly effective
This low budget, dreams as nightmares as premonitions entry played recently at The Southwest Ohio Film Festival. All anyone wanted to talk about was the budget, however I think the story with it's, at times depressing, exciting and overall fun twists is worth mentioning as well. Is this a perfect film? No but the story is fun, always fast paced at times overly melancholy for me but that's just my two cents. I have a feeling that this will make the run through festival circuits for the rest of 2019 and if it happens to play near you I'd recommend it. The cast is surprisingly good, and the soundtrack is makes good use of a actual songs with lyrics rather than the usual background tones. Overall 7 out of 10 from me.
Greta (2018)
Jordan's best in many years
The trailer made this look like a creepy if dry thriller but in all honesty it's tense and keeps up a fast pace. I've long been a fan of Jordan's films and in my opinion this is his best since In Dreams. The cast is stellar I've been hearing raves for Huppert and Moretz but Maika Monroe also elevates every scene she's in. The strength of these three performances really made it worthwhile and I think overall Greta is an underrated fun film.
Tonight I Strike (2013)
Wow
I missed this entry at a few film festivals I attended but had some interest so caught it on YouTube. Wow am I glad I did this is an incredible short it seems nearly impossible that the budget was only $15,000. I look forward to any future project by Daniel Gaudreau. Magnificent work.
I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016)
Surprising gem
This is a fun and at times incredibly tense film from beginning to end. All the performances are spectacular especially Lloyd and the young lead who is perpetually watchable. I highly recommend this to any and all horror fans but especially fans of indie horror.
Close Calls (2017)
Perfectly fun little thriller
This low budget entry screamed horror film cliche at first and then as I continued watching I found myself pleasantly surprised. It becomes a smart and rather effective mind game sure some of the scenes could benefit from a larger budget but given what they had this is actually quite good not to mention lead actress Jordan Phipps is a fantastic actress who keeps the whole film moving forward.
