The Little Mermaid (2023)
Excruciatingly Average
The magic of the animated original is lost in a wave of mediocre CGI and frustrating camera work. The "Under the sea" musical number looked so empty in the background and foreground which just emphasised how lacklustre the CGI in this movie truly is. This movie should have been about fluid movement, colour and gleam under the ocean but instead it felt empty and lime the steady cam was broken throughout production.
Melissa Mc was surprisingly good in this film and Javier Bardem controlled every scene he was in but there was no magic surrounding them in scenery which again takes you out of the magic this is supposed to be.
HB was an ok Ariel but sounded too much like AB from the original but without that childlike wonder. Awkwafina screeched her way through yet another performance and I wonder how long it will take studio's to realise her voice is irritating, or is that the point?
With all the musical numbers in the film and scenery, it just didn't gel well together and in the end I've come away feeling quite flat, compared to how I still feel watching the original.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Whose Show Is This? (2022)
Awful waste of time
What were they thinking?
This was the most pointless, unfunny, unnecessary episode of the entire MCU.
Breaking the 4th wall has been done so well in other franchises and shows but this was just ridiculous. Did we really need her to jump out of the menu and go to speak to K. E. V. I. N?
All this build up for Jen to go and change it to what she wants? The writers should be ashamed of themselves as this is pitiful.
I'm running out of ways to describe how awful this episode was. Every character has been misused, the star deserves better than being a pretentious, cocky whinge bag. If this is supposed to be a role model to young girls then they have given the world someone who exudes arrogance and is not someone I would hold as a role model.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
It's just not good
Excluding the cameos, there is really nothing exciting about this show. Even with the cameos, they feel forced in.
Jen/She-Hulk is not a likable character and the supporting cast are just demographic fillers with no personality. The suit maker is just an Edna Mode rip off and there really isn't anything exciting about the rest of the supporting cast.
The CGI and SFX are of a poor standard too.
I really am struggling to find anything positive about this show but its just poorly written, directed and edited.
I feel for the lead as she is better than this and deserves to be given a character with a better core than the "Bridget Jones" of the MCU.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: The People vs. Emil Blonsky (2022)
Was it necessary?
For a court room drama it was weak and had no suspense. Emily Blonsky is a character no one truly cares about and were the design changes for him needed? He was more menacing in the Film and I feel he will be used as Canon fodder in Thunderbolts.
I'm starting to feel Jen Walters is just a cocky character who is losing stock. The whole show is a mismatch of cameos and poor CGI which is evident in this episode. It's extremely clunky and feels like it would be suited to an early 2000's action movie.
Finally, was the twerking scene necessary? I get Marvel and Disney are progressive but is showing a professional lawyer Twerk in her office the best way to show how amazing she is?
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: A Normal Amount of Rage (2022)
Ok start
Not a bad way to kick off a new series. The build up to the transformation did feel rushed and its difficult to believe Bruce Banner would go on holiday but I guess we're going to be getting a bigger insight into Bruce's life.
Jen seems cocky and impulsive, everything Bruce isn't so there will be a lot of soul searching and decision making.
The CGI looks better than the trailer showed so no complaints there.
Not a bad start to a show so I don't understand all the negativity.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
A nothing series
Whilst Mando had a decent enough story and pay offs for the fans, this series feels like it was leading up to an amazing story but never really delivered anything worthy of its predecessor.
Episodes 5 and 6 aside, I was left deflated.
Maybe this show is just a filler for Mando season 3, Ashoka and a New Republic show.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Thank you.
It had a decent enough story with the young actors strong enough to carry the story through. The supporting cast was ok, Rudd is the standout with his fanboy awkwardness.
It had modern humour mixed with jokes thrown in from the original and the way they created the special effects to resemble the effects of the 1980's was a good touch.
Most of all, it had the pay off for fans like myself who grew up loving the originals which is all you can ask for.
It does enough to remove the bitter after taste of the abomination that came a in the shape of a dreadful reboot.
Massive hats off to Jason Reitman for giving fans new and old a decent entry in to a much loved franchise.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Not bad, not great
Overall its an OK horror film. The best part is obviously the bread slicer scene.
Feels as though they are saving the best bits for the next two installments.
Army of the Dead (2021)
The Zombie Heist Movie No One Asked For
I love a good zombie film. Slow moving, fast moving or even pumped up on rage! The scarier the better. I even like a fun tongue in cheek Zombie movie.
From Shaun of the Dead, to Zombieland, to Snyders Dawn, I love them all.
This however was neither fun nor scary.
The characters were neither likeable or relatable. The zombies were poor imitations of the vampires from 30 days of night.
The plot was patchy, the camera work was OTT with the light flares and blurred background, foreground, playground.
The only thing that it had going for it was some of the deaths were original and gruesome.
Such a shame ad it had the ingredients to be a classic but it just fell flat.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
We've seen it all before.
Unfortunately, there is nothing new from this entry in the Star Wars lore.
You can tell that the writers were trying to undo the mess that was TLJ. After building up the return of Luke and the mysterious Snoke, and then losing them so pointlessly, it seems that the story of ROS is just a patch up job with little pay off.
It's frustrating as there was so much anticipation for this film and bringing back Palpatin just comes across lazy with the two previous trilogies meaning nothing in terms of the prophecies and to make Rey a descendant of his just ruins the character development.
Darth Maul: Apprentice (2016)
Enjoyable from start to finish.
In the world of corporate board members aiming to get as much merchandise from an iconic saga, this Short film gives the fans something to celebrate and enjoy.
The choreography is great and the premise within Star Wars is believable.
The Walking Dead: What Comes After (2018)
I'm Done
Now I am one of those who has watched this from the very first episode when it was aired.
I endured the first mid-season break in season 2 with the shocking "Barn" incident.
I went through the Governor terrorising the prison and poor old Andrea.
I suffered with the rest of you as the survivors trapsed along the railway tracks.
I went through the meltdown of Mr Grimes and I even took the baseball bat lineup with Negan in my stride.
The thing that hurt was Carl. That was hard to stomach. Now, with Rick going of in the sky with that annoying junkyard dog, I feel I'm done.
My reason for being done with TWD is that it started with Rick and for me, it should end with Rick.
It's been fun but now, I'm bowing away from this show.
