Romeo 3000 (2018)
Interesting take on the bard
I saw this movie at the premier. It's always nice to see the Capitol Theater in Rome being used especially by a local production company. I have a great deal of respect for all people associated with this latest project.
I really thought the movie was a bit too long and seemed to drag on in parts. The sound seemed to fade in and out too much for me as I was struggling to understand the dialogue. Some of the background music was drowning out the dialogue of the actors.
The thing that made me laugh was during the scene where Lord Capulet was being shown the body of Mercutio. The dead actor blinked 3 times. I would have thought that scene should have either been cut or reshot.
The last half of the movie seemed to flow better as there was a little more action.
Overall, I did enjoy this movie and wish nothing but the best on this production company's future projects. May the dead never blink!
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Fast and Furious in space
I have watched every single episode of Star Trek TOS, Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager and Enterprise. I enjoyed each series for various reasons. I have seen all the movies several times over. The reboot of Star Trek is a disappointment. Here is a summary for them- mad Romulan disrupts the timeline, mad former dictator kills people, mad left behind former officer wages a private war with the federation. I'm detecting a pattern. The action scenes in the latest movie are so shaky as to make watching almost uncomfortable. I have always liked action movies, but it just gets taken too far. The plots of all the movies could use more of what made Star Trek a great franchise, the human condition. The only positive about the reboot is the banter between McCoy and Spock. They bicker like an old married couple. I do like the character of Jaylah. She kind of reminds me of Denise Crosby's Tasha Yar character. Hopefully, she won't be forgotten if and when there might be another movie in the series. All I can say so far is meh for the reboot.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Overall good fun
I really can't believe all the negative comments on this movie. I enjoyed it because, as usual, I suspend my real life beliefs and just want some entertainment. I got that and I wish everyone else would too! It does bog down in a few places but overall, I enjoyed most of the movie. How can you not help but root for Earthlings fighting to save the planet from the aliens? Most of the reviews criticize character development, but what I took from the movie is that there will be much more development as there will probably have to be at least 2 more movies so Earth can help the planet of refugees survive. My advice to everyone is take a chill pill and make your own movie if you are not happy with the Hollywood machine.
Star Trek: Horizon (2016)
Nice job!
I am so amazed at all the work that goes into making a fan film. This is one of the best I've seen. This film was made to tie up some loose ends caused by the cancellation of Enterprise. It was very well done and made to look very professional. The special effects and story line complemented each other and it seemed like most of the characters played off each other very nicely. Some people seem to go above and beyond to critique the acting, story, cgi, etc... for those of you who do, why bother watching at all? Me, I am happy to no end that people give their time, talent and money to put together a quality film that could have actually been made into an episode.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Disappointing
I looked forward to this movie and was disappointed. All it turned out to be was a rehash of Episode IV A New Hope.
The movie was slow to get the action going. I thought I was going to fall asleep.
There is no background information on what has happened since the Empire ceased to exist.
It seems the only background we get is that Finn was raised to be a storm trooper and apparently, taken from his family.
We are told throughout the movies that there are always 2 Sith lords.
Where did this Snoke guy come from and how did he make Kylo turn to the darkside and is he a Sith Lord or the new emperor of the empire holdouts? How did Rey become a scavenger and who the heck is she? If she ends being Han and Leia's daughter, how does Kylo not know he has a sister? This movie could have been much better if Luke was in it from the beginning training new Jedi knights to face the menace of the Empire holdouts.
The big problem I have is when Luke is the last of the Jedi wouldn't he have trained more than one pupil in the ways of the Force since it's been 30 years since the Empire was defeated and Kylo seems to be younger than that? Was Luke on a sabbatical from teaching? I was around the first time Star Wars was in the theaters and it was magical because there had never been so much attention to detail in a sci fi movie before. This time, there was no magic because you've seen the trick before and know how it works.
I am sure the next movie/movies will be just as disappointing.
I actually preferred all 6 previous movies to this one and would have been glad to see JarJar again. At least he was entertaining to watch and reminded me of Gilligan from Gilligan's Island!
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Great Flick!
I didn't know what to expect with this movie but was pleasantly surprised. The action scenes were fantastic and the banter between all the characters was spot on, especially Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, DeForest Kelley would be proud. I have been a big Trek fan since I was about 10 when the original series went into syndication, I am now 53. The first movie(09) was disappointing when the timeline was changed as I am a real stickler for Trek history. This iteration of the next movie in the franchise made up for the first movie. JJ Abrams and the other writers included homage to the original series without being too overt. We get to see more interaction and the basis of the friendship between Kirk and Spock, we learn more about Uhura and Spock's relationship, we get to see Uhura as an woman of action and we get to see a new incarnation of a villain. I really liked this movie and hope any others in the future will be just as good.
Star Trek (2009)
Entertained and disappointed at the same time
Okay, I have to say that I have been watching Star Trek since syndication put TOS on after school every day in the early 70's and couldn't wait to hopefully have another series start with the same characters I loved. I was excited when the movies came out and TNG started in the late 80's. Each movie and all the series that followed had the same basic theme, exploration of the universe that also explored the inner working of any society, righting wrongs and sticking to a moral and ethical code, with a little action by the bad guys thrown in. There was no moral or ethical dilemma in this movie, just a mad alien with a large ship who wanted to destroy Vulcan...shades of Star Wars! I liked this movie for the action but I just could not believe the change in the time line by a miner holding a grudge. And of all the other unbelievable things, Kirk steps into the captain's chair almost after leaving Starfleet Academy. Kirk should have been an officer for about 10 years before getting promoted to Captain. Having been in the military, no matter how competent you are, you are not going to be promoted that quickly. And Chekov was not assigned to the Enterprise for at least a year after Kirk was given the assignment. But I figure that gives Paramount at least 2 more movies to restore the time line to what it was. Here's hoping.
Seinfeld (1989)
Not funny at all
I tried to watch this show when it was on and just could not stand watching a bunch of whiny, selfish, dysfunctional 30 somethings complain about the happenings or not of their pathetic lives(I had enough of that in my life). I have since caught a few episodes in reruns, unfortunately. This was never a funny show. The comedy club spot at the beginning was weak with jokes being delivered as if Jerry was practicing in front of a mirror, instead of speaking to a supposedly educated audience and the situations were improbable with everyone having no type of common sense at all. The show was poorly written and each episode was about nothing at all. I just don't understand the appeal.
Under the Rainbow (1981)
Corny spoof
Realize that this is not a factual representation of the making of the Wizard of Oz. You know Hollywood and the phrase dramatic license? I thought this movie was hilarious because I love corny stuff. This movie is a spoof on Hollywood itself. Only a spoof would include a Nazi plot, inept secret agents, a quirky romance, a dimwitted assassin, lots of little people and, of course, the making of a movie within the movie. The big chase scene is too funny and the movie ends as it should. Did I say a good chase scene? I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. This would be a good movie for family night. So if you enjoy corny stuff, rent this and judge for yourself.
'Gung Ho!': The Story of Carlson's Makin Island Raiders (1943)
Patriotic
I watch this movie every time it's on. I have a family connection to it. Somewhere in this movie my uncle was an extra while he was in the USMC. I think it's in one of the group scenes while they are training. One day I want to get a DVD copy and do some searching. I do love the patriotism this movie invokes in me, having been active duty for several years myself in the USAF. The language in the movie is what it is for the time period. We were at war and you were in it for survival. There was no time for niceties until the shooting was over. And realize that this was a movie made to bolster morale at home, to let people know that if we worked together, this conflict would eventually come to an end. A good history lesson for any time.
