Gyeongseong Keuricheo (2023)
Started interesting and ended...
What started as an interesting take on the horrors of the Japanese occupation of Joseon nee Korea was captivating. The set production was amazing, the emotions ran a little too high but was as sincere as possible.given the subject matter. And yet, the monster was over the top ridiculous, the music sentimental & trite, the over-head lighting was too much and the plot just went as expected. We were liked the first several presides and was glued to the tv, but towards the end it was just washed out and I didn't really care about the characters except the older woman amd man who worked in the pawnshop: they were great! One could look at rhis show and say there was a lot of hatred towards the Japanese and it's understandable given the horror they wrought but the script did alllow for a few redeeming Japanese. Again, the metaphorical element of the show was brilliant and the Montserrat was symbolic of the hell that was wrought by Japan was searing. Otherwise, I def won't watch a second season.
Californication (2007)
Skin Deep a big influence or THE influence on Californicationn
I recently happened upon a movie on Showtime, of all places, it starred the late great John Ritter as a hard partying writer, who easily beds women and was married to the love of his life, now divorced, who understood him better than anyone else. He also has a son who he's not been attending to but whom he loves. Change the boy to a girl and you have Californication. I swear Duchovny, whom I admire must've seen this film or the show-runner(Tom Kapinos) did and borrowed very heavily from this Blake Edwards movie called "Skin Deep." See it and tell me otherwise but it's too apparent and astonishing in all the coincidences for it not to have been a direct influence. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Californication and if you should see John Ritter in Skin Deep, he brings a complex performance in an otherwise cheesy comedy, that Duchovny as well, does the same. But in a less cheesy comedy.
Yellowstone (2018)
Broken Lances
Once in a while, you come across a movie that influenced or was an outright copy of maths how or movie and it's startling to ones view of the idea of originality. The origin is at the heart of my thoughts.
Watching TCM this evening I happens to come across Edward Dmytryk's "Broken Lance."
I was startled at the plots similarities to Yellowstone."
A word first of the director who had a successful and burnishing career was saddled by the studios via HUAC(House of UnAmerican Activities) led by alcoholic Joe McCarthy/Roy Cohn-Donald Trump's mentor)& destroyed by the paranoia of these two shamed men. A shame when you see these utterly American films of Dmytryks.
Let's just say this movie is the roadmap and even thinly disguised plot borrowings such as the government/land issue in the film. Even the son who just got out of jail mimics the character, Joe, played w/understated the sort by Robert Wagner who would latter be a suspect in his wife, Nataly Woods death.
But that's not the story. I would beg anyone who is a fan of Yellowstone-I watched and enjoyed the first season, will see stark similarities.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Obvious, tired & a sheer waste of time
This is such a preposterously absurd movie I'm surprised it was ever made. At least the audience had the wherewithal to stay away from this overly expensive claptrap.
Seriously, cities on wheels? Obviously, the sheer power that Peter Jackson holds helped make this wasteful conceit.
Where does one begin with the ridiculousness?
1-The acting: moderate to terrible. Does Hugo Weaving ever tired of playing the same bad-guy character all the time?
All the actors were mediocre at best.
2-the directing- I know it's hard to hold a big mixture like this together but the direction was w/out merit but if I were a producer I'd seriously reconsider this director for a major project unless he was hobbled
by the producers and studio which is probable seeing the facile gripes in this stale work.
3-Script- sorry but the three writers wee def asleep on this one as there was nothing memorable in the script and clear laziness was at work here
4-cinematography- was visually ata dard w/lots of greys etc but again, standard work
5- music- was decent so that was a plus in a sea of negativity.
Overall, I'd not waste your time as this is t so bad it's fun or good it's just bad and your time is better spent elsewhere.
Terminator Genisys (2015)
Seriously? Hasta la vista fools.
I'm stunned this over-priced piece of junk was made and it made money!!!
This was the most unimaginative mess I've seen in quite a long time and there's many out there.
It wasn't even "so bad," it was entertaining. This junk is a masterclass in how to make a terrible movie, if one could call it that. The tongue-in-cheek lines have grown idiotic and tiring. Everything in this movie is a complete mess from the over-acting, directing(really Alan Taylor?-the lucre must've been to big to pass up), the cliched and lazily written script just defies explanation. Did the studios get involved? The producers? How explain this drivel ever not just being made but released!
Oh, right, it's ALL about the money.
All I can say is this, "I won't be back."
Another Life (2019)
Netflix, We have a problem
What's w/the qualitative issue w/Netflix shows? They spend a lot for overlit shows that have terrible acting and even worst concepts, like a hologram robot, William, that is, of course, a POC, who appears all too there which is ridiculous and why does he have to appear human? The "holo-calls" somehow take a whole body picture and how? How is that physically possible? The acting is incredibly horrendous and where are Asian, African or other folks? It's all cliches all the way. And the super lazy sub-plot w/the daughter is soooo tired.
They spent nearly the same amount per show here that HBO does and yet, HBO shows are qualitatively so much better.
How?
Why?
Also, the main actress, who was in "Battlestar Galactica," lacks charisma and cannot act. I just find her unbelievable. And the over emoting is tiring.
I believe part of why people are leaving Netflixnisnprecisy this: Great advertising, interesting concepts but terrible execution.
Another Life needs more life.
NOS4A2: The Dark Tunnels (2019)
Actress Horribillus
Can the main character be the worst actress for a role? In this case; Affirmative. Can a tv show possibly be redundant and horrible partly due to terrible writing, bad acting, directing and concept? Totally!
This show is an utter waste of time. So many plot holes and too little investment in the character/s.
Quinto is the only thing worthwhile I'm this insipid and, I hate to say it, boring show and even he cannot save it.
How did this ever get released? AMC needs to be made aware that this show is horrible.
Roman Empire (2016)
This could've been great
I like the immersive element of these differing stories about power, greed, wealth and just wanton avariciousness. What annoyed me was the outdated method of the tired use of BC(Before Christ) and AD(Anno Domini-After Death). Whose, but Jesus's death and why? What's a/this shows insistemt I'm using these outmoded and tired terms?
We should be using BCE(Before Common Era) and CE(Common Era).
Otherwise, this show does well in constructing much of what we know historically but still need to be reminded; As in these troubled times w/our useful idiot wannabe Caligula, this show is instructive how greed, wild ambition and power corrupts absolutely.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: Legend (Part II) (2009)
Silly and Unbelievable
Watching a rerun of NCIS, I never watched it while on a major network. The show works as a whole w/some obvious cliches but t works most of the time. While watching this I couldn't help thinking of the leader of the intels character, Lara act is absurd how attractive she is. This show needs to get real w/these eye pleasing characters. Silly, sexist and stupid. Why is t she played by a Mexican-American or Asian-American actress? Ridiculous and not credible. It ruins an otherwise good show.
