Soulless...
5 December 2021
We've come to expect high standards of children's movies lately, with films aimed at young people regularly having stunning animation and plenty of heart and soul. This has nothing. It doesn't capture the humour or themes of the book, the animation is uninspired and the pace is flat. The characters aren't brought to life effectively and there doesn't feel like any threat as they adapt to life in middle school. Unimpressed, my 8 year old daughter asked "Was that it?" as the credits rolled.

Beneath (I) (2013)

I only watched to the end in the hope they'd all be devoured!

This film was bad. Really bad. I can deal with poor effects; in fact, I often find them quite amusing. The acting is appalling, as you may expect; again, this can sometimes make the film all the more enjoyable. I really quite like movies that are so bad, they're brilliant. This definitely isn't one of those films. It's just bad.

What I couldn't get passed was the most unlikeable set of characters that have ever been put together on a boat. I wanted each one of those characters to have the most brutal demise that a spiny fish can muster. Never before have I wanted the creature to win as much. Was that the point? Perhaps. However, it just doesn't work. I can't believe I made it through to the end. Horrible.

Dreadful... but the kids love it.
9 April 2020
The characters are vile. Two of the girls especially are spoilt, uncontrolled brats who are horrible to watch. The parents should be ashamed of their parenting skills, and the awkward situation they put their children in. The CGI is really poor by today's expectations. A puppet would have been far more convincing than Caine's uncharismatic Psammead. It's a really poorly made movie which does the original story no justice.

And yet, my children love it (aged between 3-6). They've got the choice of masses of movies from various streaming services and they keep coming back to this. All of the greatest family friendly movies from the last thirty years, and they choose Four Kids and It. I'm not sure whether this is because my children have dreadful taste in films or whether it is genuinely engaging for a younger crowd. Either way, it clearly appeals to its target audience.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha... Hilarious Superhero Parody!
24 March 2018
Oh... what? It's not a comedy? It's supposed to be serious? I'm supposed to feel stirring emotions? The acting isn't supposed to be overly exaggerated in a comical, Will Ferrell style? The script isn't supposed to be so bad it's funny... if in bad taste? In that case this is dreadful. Shockingly bad! How on earth does it have such high reviews???
