Bebe's Kids (1992)
8/10
Another fond memory of my childhood...
12 July 2005
As a child I loved this movie and couldn't stop watching. My friends and I made this movie part of our weekend routine. So I decided to watch it recently to see if it was as funny as I thought it was. It turned out it was even better. Now that I am older I can enjoy the more mature jokes rather than just the hilarious antics the kids get themselves into. I am curious though about all the African-American stereotypes in this film others have commented on. It certainly can't be the kids as all races have their "bad apples". I actually think it defies some myths about African-Americans. Such as the stereotype that black men don't care about kids. Here we see a black man not only taking care of children, but other people's children. This movie even depicts the real problem of racial profiling (The security officers paying close attention on one of the Bebe children just because of how he dresses. Even though he is only a child.) All in all I believe this movie and the experience along with it some of my best childhood memories.

Not your ordinary anime...or show period!
12 July 2005
I for one rather enjoy this show because it breaks the boundaries that America has placed on Anime. Such as all anime must be a fantasy with demons or magical playing cards or robots and super humans fighting each other. The point is that the Japanese are like any other race in the fact that they enjoy laughing to. So comedic anime (such as "Golden boy" or "Super Milk Chan") should be just as welcomed and appreciated as Fantasy, Sci-Fi, or Action.

The plot (if you would like to call it that) is silly and repetitive. Each episode is built in the same way, but every episode turns out to be individually funny. I also love that there is a show within a show (A mini soap-opera about a family of ants and their marital issues) with in the show. The characters are funny I love the president most of all.

I would also like to address the comparison between "Super Milk Chan" and "Power-puff girls". The only reasons that there are similarities between the two are because SMC is a parody of the Young Super Hero shows that seem to be sprouting up like weeds (Such as "Power Puff Girls" "Teen Titans" "Danny Phantom" "Totally Spies" and that "Max mystery" thing.) The mayor and The President make this even more apparent. But people are acting as though the PPG was the first show to have a Commander or Chief figure that sends his or her (In the case of "Captain Planet") force of superheroes or spies to solve a problem. This has been used since the days of "Charlie's Angels" or " The Justice League".

So if you are a person who likes silly, repetitive, and bizarre humor make sure you check out this anime. User rating 7/10

Rocket Power (1998–2004)
What happened to all the good Nick shows?
12 July 2005
Unlike the other reviews before mine where it seemed there only reason for not liking the show is because person just happens to not be into extreme sports. My reasons for not liking this show are simply that after watching the show (or as far as I can take that crap) I am left uninterested and unamused. My niece and nephew are left the same way and they are 8 and 14 the target age demographic for the show.

I can see the sales pitch right now... "What are kids into?..." "Uhh...how about sports?..." "Well...I guess...but we need to have a show with a hip new edge..." "How about extreme sports! That's it...I'll tell the creators to use the same type of characters we have been using to depict teenagers for years." "You mean the jock, know-it all, geek, and older sibling?..." "Of course!"

Nickelodeon has really gone down hill. The shows worth watching are almost gone. Everything except "Spongebob" "Fairly Oddparent's and "Avatar" all of the other shows that actually took thought to produce were all canceled. This show is just another example of a network gone bad. Another wonderful show...gone...
12 July 2005
"Beyond Belief" was a wonderful show in which they would give you a number of stories and you would have to decide which was Fact and which was fiction. It wasn't as easy as it sounds. A lot of the stories were so outlandish you thought they had to be fake, but they would be the ones that were true. My friends and I would sit around the TV and put money on it. *sniff* I got a lot of money from that show. I hated to see it go so soon.

I will admit the acting was pretty bad, in a sort of "Mostly True Urban Legends" way. But if you're looking for Shakespeare you shouldn't watch the Sci-fi channel in the first place. User Rating 7/10

The Letter People (1974–1976)
A wonderful piece to my childhood memories...
12 July 2005
I was beginning to think I made this show up. My friends and I were recently reminiscing about old shows and I tried to remind them of this particular show to the point where I even sang the "Mr. M" song more than what should be allowed in the state of Georgia. Then I realized that my class was the only one at Norcross Elementary to show it. I bought a couple tapes off of EBay and made them watch it to prove I hadn't made it up. Now we are all addicted. The letter people is a wonderful show that makes learning fun. I am going to share this treasure with my children and I hope you will all share it with yours. Shout out to Ms. Pinsky's class! User Rating 8/10

12 oz. Mouse (2005–2020)
A 12 oz. Flop....
12 July 2005
Some of adult swim's charm comes from the fact that they may not have a large budget for their shows; the comedy is so funny that you forget the "cheapness" such as "Aqua teen Hunger Force" or "Tom goes to the Mayor" or "Robot Chicken". But where 12 oz. Mouse and even "Squidbillies" goes wrong is when the cheapness is the joke. When I watched the pilot I have to admit I laughed at some aspects of the way the characters were drawn and how it looked like it was made by some perverted 3rd grader. But as the show went on I noticed that that was it. No actual attempt to make jokes or comedic timing happened throughout the entire 15 minutes. Even the static on the microphone used to record the voice of The Shark could be heard. Shows like this make the "goofs" feature on "IMDB" useless because the entire show is a "goof". This is why I respect the shows like "Venture Brothers" because they actually draw and at some time and effort into their show. They develop plots and have actual jokes. All in all I hope that 12 oz Mouse will get canceled before it even starts. User rating 3/10

Rize (2005)
9/10
A Beautiful, yet underrated master piece!
11 July 2005
When I saw the "Rize" trailers at first I was afraid that this would be yet another movie depicting the African-American experience through slanted and distorted filters ignorance and the media would have "White America" and the rest of the world believe. After a few minutes though I found that I couldn't have been more wrong.

"Rize" is a wonderful piece of cinematic gold. It shows us what movies can really accomplish. It shows that what makes a movie "good" isn't a "Big budget" rehash of the same mindless drivel Hollywood has shoved down our throats for the past years. But a movie with substance.

If you have read the other reviews and summaries for this movie me telling you about the "plot" or "characters" is a waste of space. Also If you have read the other reviews you will see that quite a few people believe that "Rize" is just "You got Served" with face paint. People who have written this make me believe that they must have been watching a "spoof" on TV or watching commercials, and coming to there own conclusions.

"You got Served" is to the African-American Dance culture as "From Justin to Kelly" is to musicals. YGS was a the same type of group vs. rival group with "mild" drama of a betrayal of a former member that was depicted in "Bring it On" or "Good Burger" and countless other films for the 12-17 age demographic. It was a film mostly for fans to get a last few glimpses of the former music group B2k and leader of the former group immature (or IMX) together for the last time (sort of like "Spice World"). In this since it served its purpose well.

Knowing this you can see that it would be a "closed minded" and "ignorant" person to even link these two movies together. And my advice to those who choose to do so is: To actually see the movies you choose to harshly critique. You may even find that "One of these movies is not like the other" As one is a documentary and the other a "teen flick". Also I have noticed in reviews previous to mine that the movie "Be cool" is mentioned due to its brief "cameo-esque" snippet of the dance style. "Be Cool" was mentioned to be the first discovery of the dance style. This is simply not true, as ONE of the first showings of this dance style can be credited to Missy Elliot in her music video "I'm really Hot".

Another method of discrediting this movie is by attacking the director for just being "Christina's music video director" or a "photographer". Though I can honestly say that I am nor have ever been a fan of Christina Aguilera's work...I certainly do not hold this against Mr. La'Chappelle because unlike most respected and honored directors who turn a blind eye to movies like this because they aren't "Oscar worthy" he stepped in, and in his own artistic and beautiful way shuns the myths and stereotypes that have plagued the African-American people. (Especially young people residing in urban areas and ghettos for no fault of there own are labeled as "thugs" and "gangsta's" are now being known as "Artists" and "Visionaries" due to them turning back to their roots in Africa).

I hope more movies will come out like this and liberate all races from their own stereotypes.

American Dad! (2005– )
A Great...disappointment....
11 July 2005
Before I get started let me get this out in the open...I am a HUGE "Family Guy" fan, and an admirer of Seth Macfarlane's work. These two factors made watching "American Dad" even harder.

From most of the reviews I have read everyone either hates "American Dad" for the non-original character ideas and concepts (in comparison with Family Guy) or they have a problem with the show being "un-patriotic".

My reasons for despising the show are neither...but while I am on the subject...The word Patriotism is having pride for one's country, and one of the great things about this country is that we have the right to question ( or in the case of "AD" or "FG" satirize) our government and its practices. In this since I respect "American Dad" for having the "balls" to do such a thing with this country in such a "terrorist paranoia overly patriotic conservative right wing" state.

No my reason's for not liking the show are simply that the jokes aren't funny. As for the comparison between "AD" and "FG" similarities between works of the same artists are all to common and should be expected...What annoys me about the similarities is that they try to pass off the same character layouts with slight differences, and assume that we will take these characters for a brand new original show. All in all American Dad is a Diluted Family Guy. User Rating 3/10!
