Fame (2009)
okay, but disjointed
I have fallen short on caring for these characters, shouldn't I have felt something? Lots of scenes just started and you have no idea why they're in a bar? a talent contest?, in the school? ... they just suddenly are there and you don't know how they got there as a group. Relationships seem to just magically develop and you don't know how. Students signing up with a producer, who is he, where'd he come from? But by that time you really just don't care. Just falls flat. And to top it off all the music in is dumb, there's no wow moments, no even "aw, thats sweet' moments. Some of the actors do seem pretty good but they aren't given much to work with. This one isn't even worth a 2nd watch.
The Others (2001)
Perfect. Utter terrifyingly perfect.
A perfect movie. Utterly perfect. NOT an action movie, its a slower build but for good reasons, not to extend the length!. Every nuance has meaning and you won't realize all of it until you've watched it more than once. Its like threads in a terrifying tapestry and the whole is only visible when it ends.
We Go On (2016)
Excellent surprise movie, good scare and no letdowns!
This is excellent, I was thinking it was a little no-account type, possibly worth the time so give it a try... this is and excellent movie, good surprises (many!) and never predictable, I kept thinking "Its going to be... " but no, it never stumbled and fell into any hackneyed type plot. I loved the actors, the whole plot was satisfying and surprising and had some definitily creepy scares -- hot dog, this should get lots more watchers, you're missing a treat! Super movie, I now own it as I've happily added it to my collection.
Mischief Night (2014)
comedy wanna be? Misses on all factors
I like horror. I like a good scare. I love movies that others hate. I love lots of B horror movies. This is just.... lame. If they wanted a comedy, they should have gone that route, instead of inserting dumb humor where none fits. If they wanted a scare fest they should have tried for it. No trying here. Utter fail.
The Eyes of My Mother (2016)
Not to be treated like splatter horror
The black and white effect. Some say its because the horror of the film would be overblown by blood and screaming color. Maybe. I would say being filmed in black and white is also because its what in inside this girl. Color is emotion and she doesn't see life in color. She has no color in her. And that emptiness, that black and white bleakness, is something she has no capacity to change - but she keeps trying.
This film terrorizes on a level of simple reality. A true killer can just be someone who only 'feels' when they kill. And that is fleeting. The perfect 'friend' is someone who can't respond, someone who is under her complete control, whether dead or alive.
Raised in a void of emotion, she was taught from the earliest age that death and pain is only biology. Add to that seeing her mother murdered and that she possibly killed her father, (shades of sexual abuse there, lifetime or just after the mother was gone?) and you have a perfect meld of someone who will do anything just to feel... anything.
And that can leave you with a unsettled shocked feeling, as you've glimpsed a desperation that you realize can exist where you least expect it.
Modus Anomali (2012)
excellent movie all the way!
Its not just the ending that flips this movie into the "awesome" catagory, its the suspense, the mind numbing confusion of our main character, doesn't know who he is, doesn't know what's happened to him...
But even as the peices fall, this still holds onto you. If you're looking for slasher horror, this isn't that, although there is blood, but this is more intense (I get bored by slasher horror, frankly) and builds the suspense and the viewers confusion is another great aspect of the film as even the things that you'll notice and say, "Hold it, why did he..?" will all fit into the psycotic trap this movie is meant to be.
Great film. I watched it online (NF) and then had to buy it as its one of those that will bear rewatching multiple times just to see the puzzle really slide into place. I'm just a fan of horror and I love something that turns me on my head and makes me want to watch it again to see how the director did it!
Keep in mind that two of the "bad reviews' were one person who thought the main guy lost his SIBLINGS (Uh?) and one person who couldn't get off the phone long enough to allow this to work in the minds (you have to actually watch something in order to form an opinon on it...) Which is too bad for them, they've missed a kick-a$$ movie!
The Ruins (2008)
Seen it 4 times and its still Awesome!
An almost perfect stay-with-you-in-dreams movie! Great Acting, great plot, the whole things flows seamlessly and builds a horrendous suspense.
The imperfect? One scene is for gore only, and you could take it out and not miss it a bit. But even that scene is still superbly acted!
I don't have tons of "artsy' comments or supposedly intellectual rants about the 'right' way to make a movie like some nits who've never made a movie. This is a great movie with a unique plot and horrifying sense of reality to it, gave me the creepers! I'd love to see a sequel!
The first time I watched it, I still remember it ending and just thinking... WOW.... and then watching it again. When that happens, that's a great movie!
The Sickhouse (2008)
Did anyone actually WATCH this?
I loved this movie. And I'm not a idiot, gee, if a 16th century orphanage is being torn down, of course the archologist wants to see what she can find before it is. That was very clear, she's a fanatic on gee.. history... so yeah, she'd sneak in before its gone! Who would worry about a 400 year old sickness in bones? As for the end, this is twisty one, and watching it may have actually helped those that seemed to have missed out on what the ending even was. I've watched this already twice, and have the dvd to watch again, its twisty, its spooky, and its more than just a 'sickness'. Its not perfect, but its in my favorites list! This is an awesome popcorn movie!
February (2015)
Actually an excellent movie but timeline is confusing
I just watched this a 2nd time a year later, and now understand a lot more. Its the lack of clarity in the time line that threw me, and that is a flaw, but I knew, even after the 1st watch, that this movie was special. No jump screams but a lingering horror that is overwhelmingly sad.
People say there's no character development, but Katherine just wrung me out, I can feel so much for her and her acting is perfect, the tiny inappropriate smiles, the subtle shrugging off of reality, one can see her thoughts and dialogue isn't needed.
If you like figuring out a twisty movie, and can like a slow burn that doesn't over explain, then this is for you. I love a movie that I get more and more out of each time i'll watch it. Now off to buy this (somewhere!) as its going on my keeper shelf to watch again!
A Dark Place Inside (2014)
Nope Nada Never ever waste time with this one
First off, I love horror, and I love a whole lot of movies that are B horror, that in-your-face tired stories, blood and guts for no purpose, hey some of them are fun... and I will give any movie a good chance to pull me in.
I lasted thru 40 minutes of this and I just couldn't take any more. I tried, I really did. I wanted the movie the other two people rated. I waited for it... maybe its slow... maybe it take time to show what they said it would... nope nada never.
The man who kills in order to survive in this world... no... just a man who kills. Terrible acting, terrible non-story about a killer who (Spoiler) likes to sleep with dead body parts (and not even very realistic body parts).
I couldn't even hate the killer. I just felt nothing. No revulsion, no scares, not even the slightest unease about who he'll kill next... I just didn't care.
Feelings about this movie? Boredom. That's it. Now I'm going to pop my popcorn for something that will make me jump -- at least a little! Its not like its that hard to make me jump. I've had C grade horror give a few good chills.
This one...chills? NONE.
