Lord of the Flies (1990)
Jesus H Christ!
I was truly shocked that Hollywood had the audacity to rewrite Goldings book into such a fractious, tough son of a gun cliché.
In the book, the group consists of Cathedral choir boys and regular school boys, all British, pre-pubescent, very immature and out of their depth. These original boys had an innocence that eventually turns to brutish tribalism. Chaos and lack of understanding drives the story into an awful animalistic breakdown of order.
This ruinous eventuality was totally underachieved in the film by these precocious American brats.
Sorry, but yet another film Hollywooded....
Colditz (1972)
Curious story manipulation?
My first impression of watching this series as an adult is to question what is Robert Wagner doing opening the first episode and then carrying on through the years spent at Colditz as an important, brave, ingenious and daring son of the goldarn US of A?
As far as accurate history is concerned, and do please check this out, according to the records and the activities of the residents of Colditz, there were no Americans there until three weeks before liberation. None of whom escaped.
Why would they do this you might ask?
Well the series was financed with American studio money. No serious US production can stand a cat in hell's chance of success unless it has an American as a leading role, apparently? Ergo, the story you see is made to look like an American thriller, even though it was French, Dutch, Polish and British, Air force, Navy and Army prisoners who were the real heroes of Colditz. It is a crying shame that this European story was ransacked by Hollywood....
The Jungle Book (2016)
Problem with the cast
This is a magnificent movie. It includes familiar elements that are cleverly staged. Very dramatic action scenes and the usual high quality CGI we know nowadays. I am troubled however how certain cast members have regular American TV accents. Especially Mowgli, lovely little guy that he is, he should have had an Indian accent. Unfortunately as we know, unless an American takes the prominent role in a movie, then American audiences just won't show interest in it at the box office. This is an ongoing tragedy. I do think putting Rowan Atkinson as a cowboy would also be tragic so I am not just being anti-American. I wait in hope that these ridiculous casting protocols based on revenue would stop blighting authenticity in today's productions.
