Kol (2020)
Reminds me of TVN Signal but without the emotional release
The film is definitely well made and the director has done an excellent job building up the tension. Jeon Jong Seo continues to impress me and I'm looking forward to see the kind of roles she'll take on in the future. She is the strongest aspect of this movie. I did not enjoy the ending. For me personally, when i'm engaging with a story as terrifying and as devastatingly tragic as this I need there to be some sort of catharsis for the hero and for me along with them. I do not enjoy being left hanging like that.
Joker (2019)
Excellent pacing and an a-class performance make a decent script soar.
Joker (2019) is a super intense and emotional ride that in the end leaves you terrified but also weirdly satisfied. On terms of story I would say it's good but relatively basic. But the well directed tension, the cinematoraphy and Phoenix's A-maaazing performance take it to a whole other level. One thing I can't decide on is how much I liked the last scene. On the one hand I found it a bit underwhelming compared to the scene that came before it that could have been a good finale, on the other hand I think it helped ease the feelings of distress that had gathered up in me at that point.
Shazam! (2019)
Another excellent chapter for the DC universe.
It is absolutely ridiculous how in love I am with this movie. It has such a unique character. In some way it takes you back in time because it gives the kind of feel those classic 80s family movies with a dark edge like the Gremilins or the Labyrinth did. I wish that they had released Aquaman in the summer and this film close to christmas instead cause Shazam is exactly the film that you watch again and again during the holidays, covered in a blanket drinking hot chocolate. The Shazam family truly has gotten hold of my heart!
Captain Marvel (2019)
Lovely period piece.
Well, 8/10 really but you know...Much better than I expected based on the trailers and then the mixed reviews! The story was good. Pretty standard but told in cohesive, interesting way; very funny but also very touching in some parts. Good cinematography, though I will admit not very imaginative; nothing that would give the film a unique feel. I was pleased by Brie Larsson's portrayal of the character. She had a hard job to do considering the character of Marvel is not very well realized. We get just glimpses of how her personality is supposed to be from the falshbacks and then from Maria's and Monica's memories of her. Maybe they should have taken the time and showed a bit more from her life as Carol Danvers. But even though people might have a bit of trouble connecting with Carol's character i think they will enjoy her interactions with the rest of the cast. She plays really well with them and they're all amazing in their rolls. Nick Fury, Talos, Maria Rambeau, Goose... i loved them all so much and they truly elevated the movie.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Enjoyable but definitely can't stand alone.
I had a good time watching Alita. It's a film with many good qualities but the weak story truly weighs the project down. Visually wise It has a spectacular worldbuilding ,the Iron City especially looks as if it was taken out of an anime, but it would have been nice if they had touched a bit more on the history of the Fall and the war between the social classes that I assume must be going on. The lead character is awesome, an adorable dork with a love for drama and serious rage issues, but unfortunately she's about the only character interesting enough for the viewer to connect with. Her story arch is truly a mess. She just starts doing one thing and then she gets sidetracked and goes on to do another thing and that happens again and again. Until the very end she has no clear sense of purpose and that hurts the movie a lot. I personally think they should have focused a bit more on the Motorball part of the story.
The romantic storyline i definitely didn't care for but I didn't find it unrealistic. Alita is a teenage girl afterall so it's not out of character for her to fall head over hills for the first bad boy character that shows her around and teaches her how to have fun. It's like... we know he is a loser and uncharismatic and has zero game but she sees him with her rose-colored glasses sooo...
Would have loved to see more Asian actors involved, please and thank you.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
It stays with you
I personally loved Three Billboards. It's such an honest ,heartbreaking, but simultaneously funny in a dark sort of way, study on grief and hate and justice. There is a wide range of deeply flawed characters that were obviously not meant to be anyone's favorites but because they are created with so much care and love, the audience ends up loving them too. You get disappointed everytime they make the wrong decision and you're proud of them everytime they have a breakthrough; learn a lesson. Francis McDormand's performance is devastatingly beautiful and i seriously hope she gets all the awards. It would be a clear 10 for me if not for the ending which left me a bit unsatisfied. It just felt that the heroes had not reached the end of their personal journey yet. I needed maybe one more scene there.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Heartwarming and extremely entertaining
I had a great time watching this! Vol2 is as charming and funny as the first one and i appreciated how they devoted time into expanding the GotG universe and exploring character development/relationships instead of trying to come up with a plot that would tie in the Guardians to the general MCU. I personally enjoyed the Rocket/Groot/Yondu part of the story a bit more than Peter's and Gamora's personal story lines. It was more interesting to me and Rocket and Yondu freaking MVPd both their humorous but also their heavily emotional scenes. The Drax-Mantis dynamic was also a great addition. As for the villain part of the story...well... I did not really care for the Sovereign Race sidestory and i wished that after their role as plot device was done and over we would not see them again but the post- movie scenes suggest otherwise. Pity. And Ego. I don't know. A typical megalomaniac who wants to destroy the universe just as many others before him. Though it still baffles me how a being who began its personal quest because it was eager to not be alone decided that its purpose in the universe was to be all there is. It sounds kind of stupid???
Suicide Squad (2016)
Looking forward to more Harley and Deadshot!
Although i don't think the Suicide Squad was as good as BvS, it was still a really fun time and it definitely enriched the DCEU as a whole. I think that in general the positive aspects of the movie made up for the not so positive aspects. Most of the performances were A+++. Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Viola Davis killed it. Jared Leto was fine as Joker and i would like to see more of him but i would prefer it if it was always in connection to Harley Quinn. Not as a main villain. Cara Delevinge's acting was weak and i am glad that her storyline has closed for good (hopefully). The team dynamics were great. I thoroughly enjoyed Harley's and Deadshot's ''blooming friendship''. And i believe they will be the fan favorites since they were the ones who got a solid backstory and got scenes throughout the movie that helped you to feel for them. I would have liked to see more of Katana. She was cool but the movie did not help me understand her motivations. I did not have that many problems with the editing. Only in the beginning during the character introductions, the scenes were not flowing so smoothly the one after the other. But after the team assembled it was okay. It is true that the villain was the main negative aspect of the movie. Cara's acting did not help but i believe that in an introductory movie they should have gone with a smaller scale villain. Little less on the supernatural side and more comprehensible. Otherwise they should have devoted a little more time in who Enchantress is, her backstory and her relationship with Rick (because i was supposed to care about their romance too). I understand ofc that using the Enchantress made for a really impressive final battle scene. I did enjoy that very much. The visuals were fantastic.
Jack et la mécanique du coeur (2013)
Beautiful and heartbreaking
I have read comments where people mention how much this movie reminded them of ''Hugo''. I too agree that there are several similarities and it was only natural that since i loved ''Hugo'', i would absolutely fall in love with ''Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart''. From the very first second the film introduces you to a surreal, almost fairytale- ish world that you cannot help but lose yourself into. The story is quite simple. It handles a universal and overused theme; love. The ache of love and the risks we take (or don't take) for the sake of it. But Jack is not only set to get hurt if he falls in love; he is doomed to die. So i think that makes his point of view on the matter quite original. What amazed me more about the film is that Jack's condition made it that much easier for the makers to portray the way he feels (when he hurts, when he is overwhelmed with love and joy) and for us to feel with him. It was a very unique experience. There is only one group of people that i would not recommend this film to. If you do not like musicals, you will not enjoy the film. Many times the actual dialogue gives its place to songs.
Sigeuneol (2016)
Best K-drama to date. And i have seen tons.
This is one of the most well thought/well executed TV-series i have ever watched and not just by k-drama standards. The premise is innovative, the characters and their relationships very well fleshed out and the suspense present from the very first to the very last scene. It just never gets boring and every episode matters. This is a story that seemingly begins in the year 2000 when a young Park Hae Young witnesses a girl getting kidnapped. The case remains unsolved as Park Hae Young's attempts to explain what really happened to the police are met with indifference. That in combination with a case very personal to Park Hae Young are enough to make him mistrust the police and the transparency of their procedures. He grows up to become a criminal profiler and one day he crosses paths with detective Cha Soo Hyun. Cha Soo Hyun has spent the last fifteen years looking for her missing partner Detective Lee Jae Han who was facing criminal charges for bribery/extortion. After 15 years of no trace we finally get a clue of what happened to Jae Han when through his old, non-functioning walkie talkie he communicates with an understandably confused Park Hae Young. Jae Han from the year 2000 reports that this will probably be his last transmission, that the past can still change and that Park Hae Young just has to convince Jae Han from 1989. And that is how a strange partnership who evolves into a caring and close friendship that transcends time begins. I cannot describe properly how much i love this show and the main characters who despite their tragic pasts never give up (which is the main teaching of the story) and continue to fight forward through a system of injustice so that other people will get to have what they themselves had been denied. All three of them were hardened by life but never lost their humanity and their ability to care. Their relationships also make me SO emotional. Especially the unusual friendship between Park Hae Young and Lee Jae Han who until the very end never meet properly and yet they grow to love each other so much. For me the most powerful and downright heartbreaking scene was when (MAJOR SPOILERS) they were both going (again seemingly) through their final moments and we had a flashback to their dialogue when each wished that the other would be happy. Ofc the romantic sl was also beautiful. Very subtle and yet so important. Cha Soo Hyun waiting/searching for the love of her life for 15 years to finally be the one who will motivate Jae Han to fight for his life. Like..kill me now, let them get married and adopt Park Hae Young...or sth. I just want them to be a family, okay? Also the evil guy!Kim Boo Joo. What an excellent casting choice for sb to play the DEVIL reincarnated (like for real, he's evil through and through). Every time i saw him on my screen, i was overwhelmed by the need to beat him to the death with a stick (the show did NOT disappoint me in that part either!). I think this review is getting somewhat incoherent but it's just because i love this so much, i have no words! So forgive me. And watch the show! Which def needs a season 2.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
I can't imagine a fan getting out of the theater disappointed.
I understand why the film would divide people but for me it is a personal favorite. Definitely among the top five of the best superhero films, maybe second to the Dark Knight. First of all, this is a beautiful film. The visuals are out of this world. The performances are ALL on point. Ben Affleck is amazing as Batman,Cavill does a much better job than in MOS and i even liked Jesse Eisenberg. Yes, this version of Luthor is a bit over the top but Jesse did a good job anyway. I've heard reviewers going about the film running lots of parallel stories together and not focusing on one storyline. And it is true that the movie is trying to set up a lot of things at once but i think it does it successfully; or as successfully as possible considering the difficulty of the task. There were so many scenes that i loved. Others because they were cool (f.e. the BvS scene AMAZING and Wonder Woman in action also SLAYING) and others because they were so emotionally overwhelming they send goosebumps all over my body. I also like that Lois Lane was not just a stand-by love interest or the means to some plot point. She was relevant, she was badass and one of the very few superhero romantic interests done right(i am having a hard time thinking of another one RN). The score was also very fitting and the ending I LOVED. In general, it is a dark film but it doesn't leave you in a grim mood. Quite the opposite. The ending note is quite hopeful; even though in a bittersweet way. As i said at the beginning i understand why this film wouldn't be for everyone but i'm quite certain that people who've been looking forward to this will not be let down.
