Immaculate. Incredible. Show stopping. Masterpiece. If you disagree you're wrong.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
The Destruction of Character Development
As someone who has constantly praised this show for being one of the best things on television, and even as this season has aired I have stood by what I've said despite the criticism, this episode shows the true weakness of the writers. In shows like Game of Thrones, it is the characters and their development that really make it something special. In this episode alone, we saw two of the most prominent characters in the show have their development slaughtered. After EIGHT seasons of build up, we see Dany burn down the heart of the kingdom she wishes to rule for shock value. While I know that the writers are going for a "mad queen" plot line to mirror her father, it is simply too rushed and condensed in this season alone for it to make any sense with her development.
However, the most disappointing part is what occurred with Jaime in this episode. Jaime is by far one of, if not the, most compelling character on this show. Jaime has gone from one of the most hated characters to a hero and honorable man over the course of the show and to see this incredible arc stripped away in just one episode is heartbreaking. It does not make sense with his character for him to die in the arms of the woman that represents who he started off as in the show, not even mentioning the fact that his decision to return to her came out of nowhere in the previous episode. Personally, I believe that Jaime should have been the one to kill Cersei rather than having them both die (in one of the least satisfying deaths of two main characters in television history) crushed under rubble and buried alongside years of character development.
Obviously, there are still things I enjoyed about the episode. I believe that most technical aspects were impressive and I enjoyed Arya and the Hound this episode, along with some other things.
As I said before, I don't believe that this whole season has been horrible like some people do, but this episode feels like a joke. It is a shame to see a show that I have loved for years fall apart in it's last few episodes due to poor writing and the destruction of complex characters. I hope that they can wrap it up nicely in the next episode and stay true to what this show is, but after this week's episode I just cannot get my hopes up.
