Padmaavat (2018)
Mr. Bhansali's Magnum Opus!
After all the difficulties in releasing the film Padmavat clearly emerges as the winner. Mr Bhansali's attention to finer details with larger than life characters great costumes makes the movie a visual treat. The actors have done a phenomenal job with Ranveer aka Khilji stealing the show as a savage ruler who could go to any limits to fulfill his desires. Shahid kapoor as the Rajput might get overshadowed at times but has done justice to the role and Deepika as Padmavati is great as usual.
Some scenes in the movie could have been handled better such as the climax scene but having said that this movie is a celebration of the Rajput pride and bravery and would be remembered for years to come.
The dialogues are very well written with some great punch lines by Khilji manage to keep the audience interested in this 3 hour long saga. I personally found the background score disappointing but the songs like Khali bali and Ghoomar made up for it.
This movie is a must watch for the sheer effort and hardwork put by the cast and crew of Padmavat and Kudos to them.
Baby Driver (2017)
Baby oozes out entertainment
The movie Baby Driver is a unique take by Edgar on heist. The Screenplay is fast and engaging and an ensemble cast makes the viewer clinched onto the seat. Something that stands out in the movie is the relationship between Doc and Baby that has subtle layers other than being coerced by doc, Baby too enjoys his role in the team. Deborah's character even though has few scenes has been performed exceptionally well and Kevin Spacey as Doc is once again absolutely brilliant. Overall, Baby Driver is a must watch of 2017 and Ansel should be rewarded for such a beautiful performance yet again!
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Marvelous Disappointment
This is an attempt by Marvel to make an action movie funny but the attempt falls flat. Though Hemsworth and Blanchett seem to be having fun doing this but it does not come out naturally. The action scenes are a treat to watch with Ruffalo showcasing yet again a great performance as The Hulk. Overall the film suffers because of the director's style of portraying Thor not as a superhero but as an individual struggling being a prisoner at the other side of the universe.
The Ghazi Attack (2017)
Engrossing story with expected ending
The Ghazi Attack talks about the war under water between India and Pakistan. The story is about how the attack on city of vizag was prevented by the armed forces.
Acting - The film includes veteran actors like Kay Kay Menon as the Captain, Atul Kulkarni and Late Legend Om Puri and Tapsee Pannu in lead roles. Top notch performances by all of them kept the audience engrossed till the end even though the first half was slow.
Music- The back ground music and use of the national anthem at appropriate time was a good effort by the music department
Direction - Sankalp Reddy as a debutant has done a great job by getting the required performances from the actors and a lot of great work expected out of him with such a start to his career.
Weakness- Tapsee Pannu's role could have been utilized better. Few scenes in the movie could have been avoided to make it more crisp.
Overall - Brilliance by Atul Kulkarni and great performances by the acting staff makes a predictable story a decent watch
Dishoom (2016)
Face Paced Drama!
The trailer of the movie did not create high expectations as it looked like a typical Bollywood action drama with John and Varun as these good looking cops. The movie actually was a pleasant surprise with catchy songs and sharp direction. Debutante Rohit Dhawan has done a great job by not wasting time and to the point story telling. John as an actor has not evolved a bit with his nice physique and poker face his performance is average. Jacqueline also is in her comfort zone doing the same poor performance. But, Varun has taken a lot of efforts to improve which can be seen in his chemistry with John. The exotic locations and Rahul Dev add some spice to the screenplay. Wagah played by Akshay Khanna is a total disappointment and in negative role evokes pity than fear. The overall experience was average and I would go with 7/10 for the efforts of Varun and Rahul Dev.
Sully (2016)
An Outstanding Piece by Legends in Hollywood
Sully-The Story of "The miracle of Hudson" depicting the life of Sullenberger is a piece of art that would be remembered in years to come. The film promises you to be immersed for the entire duration and complete credit goes to the director and the Protagonist.
Acting (9/10) - Tom Hanks as Sully puts in so much intensity into the character that one keeps wondering that how does he does it so effortlessly. Aaron as the first officer Skies is great too and does full justice to his part. Laura Linney's part as Sully's wife is limited and she plays the role decently. Overall the movie's greatest asset are its actors.
Direction (8/10) - Clint Eastwood's American Sniper remains his best work but Sully's direction is one notch below it and its because the story is pretty simple and the director's role in keeping the story engaging does not require much effort. Clint Eastwood has of course done a commendable job and looking forward to more.
Overall, Sully is a great work to keep audience entertained with its subtle humor at regular intervals. I give it 9/10 as some great research has been done by the cast and crew which has delivered great performances too.
M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)
MS Dhoni-The already told Story!
The movie is not good as expected and the reason is that the writer chooses to focus on the emotional nagging instead of the great content which could build a great story. Performance by Sushant Singh is truly brilliant and MS Dhoni's hard work and commitment towards his work is commendable but the loophole are the supporting actors. The two actresses Disha and Kiara have done average performances and Bhoomika as Dhoni's sister is not convincing enough. Too many songs in the movie spoil the screenplay. The only factor which makes the viewer going is his/her love for the real captain Cool and the sacrifices and efforts he takes to reach to the top. Overall I would recommend the movie as a one time watch but honestly Neeraj could have been much better
Baar Baar Dekho (2016)
The Trailer Itself!!
The movie is the worst that is out there in recent times! The poor acting by both Katrina and Siddharth along with the pathetic story line add up to a disaster. The exotic locations and the decent screenplay could not save this work of cinema. I literally was counting every minute of the movie waiting for it to end. Ram Kapoor as Diya's father was good and the songs were decent and of course Kala Chasma was a treat to watch. The direction was so bad that it reminded me of a similar failure ROY. It is high time we as Indian cinema audience grow up from cliché love stories I give it 3 out of 10 and a definite miss and prefer freaky Ali any day over this!
Te3n (2016)
Excellent Performances with Predicable Plot!
Te3n is a movie that happens when Bollywood tries to recreate the magic of kahaani. The first half of the movie is extremely slow and one can't help but feel joy when the story reaches the interval. Once the story unfolds in the second half one doesn't seem to care about the kidnapping and the ending is disappointing to say the least. The acting is the only element that binds it together and Amitabh Sir and Nawaz have given brilliant performances. The chemistry between Vidya Balan and John is totally disconnected. I would go with 4 out of 10 because of the seniority of the actors but for busy working professionals it is better to give this a skip.
Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)
Cinematic Excellence!
This movie will stay with you for a long time even after the theater. The primary reason is the entertainment high it provides at its climax. Nawaz owns the character of Ramanna and is truly a pleasure to watch. The scar on his face and the process by which he kills people actually starts giving goosebumps. The direction by Anurag Kashyap is also great and is inspired from the likes of Hollywood. Sobhita as a debutante is also fine but I feel her character was limited and she played her part well. However, The surprise element of this movie is Raghav aka Vicky Kaushal as the ACP and I must say this is one of his finest performances. This movie is not for the masses of course due to the adult content and violence but is surely the one which critics would enjoy because of the sheer pleasure of watching as it emulates Hollywood. I would give it 9 out of 10 and a thumsup for the entertainment it provides for the generations to come!
Rustom (2016)
Not met the expectations!
Rustom is the typical Indian drama film with cliché story line and emotional songs. The first half of the movie is very boring and the tone that the film sets makes even the second half of the movie look pale. The comedy in the court room seems unnecessary and gives the film the feel of watching Adalat TV show and not Akshay Kumar starer. Akshay Kumar as Rustom Pavri has done a brilliant job and lives up to his expectations. Kumud Mishra actually brings the much necessary momentum in the movie with Ilena as Rustom's wife is poor in the emotional scenes and they seem artificial from the start. Vincent the investigating officer played by Pawan Malhotra is convincing and he does justice to his role. Overall Rustom does not meet the expectations set out in the trailer and fades away as yet another murder drama. I would go with 5 out of 10 as Akshay has given a great performance yet again.
Sarbjit (2016)
Heart Touching Story with great performances
Sarbjit is a brilliant movie and it exceeded my expectations as after Mary Kom I did not expect much from new director Omung Kumar. The screenplay is great and the story depicts the struggle Sarbjit sister faces for 23 years to get her brother out of prison. This movie is a must watch for the excellent performance of Randeep Hooda and the optimism his character shows despite of suffering. The dialogues in the movie are also good and the sad background score goes well with the story line. In the end one has tears in the eyes after seeing the suffering of Sarbjit. The only disappointment was that Richa chadha did not have much role as Sarbjit wife and her skills were under utilized and I would give it 9 out of 10 as this is by far the best drama film of 2016.
Madaari (2016)
Movie which depicts bad side of Indian Politics
This movie is on similar lines of A Wednesday in which a man has lost something very dear to him. The story is easily predictable from the trailers but, the differentiating factor is the hero Irrfan Khan. I am a very big fan of Irrfan and I must say he brings great acting and performance with every movie he does. His transformation from a common man to the kidnapper is very evident from the tone modulations. The screenplay is slow and it gets difficult to watch once they bring in the emotional angle repeatedly. The music also is forgettable and with Vishal Bhardwaj handling the department we usually have greater expectations. I would like to go with 5 out of 10 only for Irrfan khan performance otherwise it is a movie which can be skipped over Dishoom.
Sultan (2016)
Family Sports Entertainer
Sultan is truly a Salman Khan movie! It has the action, romance and a positive message at the end. In the first half the movie with its excessive songs and predictable story line makes reaching the interval a bit tough even though Vishal- Shekhar have done a commendable job with the music. The high of the movie is Fateh Shah aka Randeep Hooda who steals the show away as Sultan trainer. Anushka Sharma has also acted well as Aarfa and done justice to the opportunity. At the end Sultan is worth a watch for the MMA action, Randeep's performance and of course brand power of SULTAN but would have been better had the movie been a bit shorter.
