Sh'at Neila (2020)
From amazing to cringy and back to amazing
Excellent military fighting scenes, seem very real. And clearly a different vibe from other war movies, it feels Israel it's a family defending their home, the soldiers are real people, man and women. It's worth watching it in hebrew even if you don't speak it at all as I do. It has a much more authentic feel.
Interesting dive 50 years ago, and in a different culture in a real war.
Excellent first 2 episodes, goes down from there, then probably also because of smaller budget, but also because of mediocre script. Picks up again in episodes 7 and 8 so it's worth to keep watching.
This could've been great, top notch. Sometimes it is. But unfortunately some other times it's really cringy. Cringy like fast forwarding cringy.
Some other fighting scenes are not at all real, with soldiers acting out like complete amateurs, not real soldiers.
It goes over the top in some scenes. I remembered the scene with WIll Smith dragging an extraterrestrial in the desert in a scene that made me laugh, but which wasn't supposed to be at all funny, but tragic. Some personal issues on military radio chatter are also cringy. But maybe this is a cultural israeli thing, the way they do shows over there.
But then the show comes back and delivers again. So it's worth watching.
It explores well some social, political and cultural issues, although could've done much more here.
I'm not sure exactly what the Brief was for the movie (if any of course), what it's trying to achieve, to communicate. Probably they are also not very sure what the story is. Definetely worth watching, with some fast forward on some cringy scenes.
Industry (2020)
Niche ambitious show
A british version of "Billions" with two differences:
- it's focused on interns instead of CEOs and this makes it less exciting in a way, as the stakes are much smaller and also the characters are not so flashy, not so spectacular or artificial
- it's more natural. Love/sex scenes are actually very natural, real, sexy and very much like in the real life.
- Harper did a lot o great work here, she practically carries the entire show.
- it has lot of potential for character development and leadership/proffesional lessons. Starting in episode 4 it starts to get more interesting than in episodes 2 and 3. So it's worth to stay with it. We'll see where it goes from here.
Of course, many people not working in finance or not being ambitious young proffesionals, probably won't get or like this show.
A lot of cliches yes, but they are all real themes in real life, even if not daily encountered.
Meet Monica Velour (2010)
Artsy European film like
Great film. It's definetely like an Artsy European film, not an american one.
I shows some parts of reality/life exactly like they are. With real problems, real life and human imperfections.
A nerd - coming of age kid and a former porn star with a kid in a custody battle.
It's a very nice story - interesting to watch. A lot of interesting characters.
Dunkirk (2017)
Collective Emotion and Visual Masterpiece
Amazing cinematography.
This is a movie which has to be seen.
Yes, there are no well developed individual characters.
However I think this was intentional. The intent I think was to describe a few collective characters.
The emotion was there - I actually cried many times during the film. It's about the collective characters of british soldiers, of the british people, soldiers, commanders, nurses, etc., involved in the whole thing.
And that the individual person actually doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. Many individual soldiers might die. 50/50 chance maybe. But their individual contribution - taken together with others' actually matters a lot.
In the end it tries to be I think quite accurate historically on the feeling picture and see it from that specific time. When no one was actually ultra happy or victorious because it was just an evacuation.
Visually it's great.
The soundtrack is great and actually makes the movie. Seems to be one take with no pause, which is impressive.
I think the director tried to convey the general feeling at the time, historical accuracy on that level (not on microlevel), and a collective emotion. . And a bit of artistic movie making.
Instead of general entertainment - a love story + explosions and triumph. like Pearl Harbor for example which I also liked a lot but for different reasons.
I also missed more action in this movie. At least from the commanders part - some planning, discussions, etc..
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Really nice Romance and a WW2 Drama
I don't really understand why this movie has such poor reviews. It is definetely worth seeing.
The romance is great, with a lot of details right - about subtle feelings in different situations.
Yes, it is a movie, not a documentary - so fighting scenes are not realistic - LIKE IN ALL MOVIES.
I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. I love WW2 movies, and also this kind of intense romance movies. If you enjoyed Top Gun, The Notebook, then you'll love this movie.
