Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
Very Nice but VERY VERY overrated
Avatar is a show about people who can bend various elements to their will. When the fire nation attacks the Dragon Warrior....sorry the Avatar must stop them.First the positives the animation and art are nice the characters are believable and dynamic the settings are creative and the story flows well and is predictable but not bad or tedious like say SAO or Fairy Tail.
The negative is very simple and something that a lot of people avoid when praising it as a masterpiece which always bothers me.The clichés severely way the show down.I don't add clichés as a negative for most old shows from the 80s or 90s since they probably invented them but this show was made in the early 2000s it follows a lot of these clichés.Firstly the chosen one cliché the cliché I hate the most. This cliché is mostly caused when the author finds it difficult to set up events without making them seem contrived so they link it by a mystical prophecy or time travel. This makes the story very predictable and despite Avatar being very in the moment there's always that thought in the back of your head "Yeah he's not gonna die until after beating the main villain."Which is very unfortunate. Then is Aang having a hidden power inside him which he's afraid to use because he may hurt someone and doesn't want to be the hero. That doesn't sound at all like Peter Parkers Spiderman and Narutos Nine Tailed Fox thing.Fun Fact:When I was younger because of the similar artstyle I thought Aang was a bald Naruto. There are many other clichés but those are well executed enough that I'm not really annoyed by them.Should you watch this definitely just don't go in expecting Ghost in the Shell or Death Note but go in expecting a fun and heartwarming show.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
Has problems but really good
This show has a lot going for it.Firstly the animation and art are fantastic and some of the best I've seen. The characters motivations are quite realistic and the drama is always present which it should be especially since this is the show about giants eating naked people.Getting onto the characters(early light spoiler warning) Eren is revenge fuelled after the Titans destroy his life.Mikasa his adopted sister is fuelled by the motivation to protect him.Armin just wants to accompany his friends. The show also mildly touches on the topic of irrational religious beliefs as well as having to lose your humanity to cope with horrible predicaments(the latter I feel is hammered a bit too much).Thoughthere are problems I have even with the first arc.Firstly the cast is very large so there are multiple deaths. The problem is I haven't had enough time to care about them.Thats okay as long as the deaths are simply used to make the audience afraid and add a sense of true danger but they linger on the deaths far too long.Example(fair spoilers by the way)a certain character called Marco dies and he wasn't memorable in the least and when they linger on him for so long I'm left wondering why. Then is the role of Mikasa who is unbelievably overpowered not just to the point where she is stronger than everyone else but to the point where she's only in danger at two points in the series. Then is the Female Titan arc which has unbelievably wonky storytelling.(Major Spoilers)While it mantains the mood and emotion the main antagonist the female Titan has been shown to be capable of being defeated by the team captain Levi yet insists on not doing so because God knows why.Not to mention they have multiple chances to kill the Titan but they monologue whilst it thinks of ways to escape.Because of all this I give AOT an 8/10 and despite the problems a recommendation to watch it ~heywhatsupguysitsscarcehere
JoJo no Kimyô na Bôken (2012)
A great and timeless anime
This anime certainly lives up to the bizarreness of its title. So the show from Part 1 to 3revolves around multiple generations of a family called the Joestars fighting various supernatural threats.Firstly the art is worthy of praise a semi realistic semi exaggerated style that's rarely seen in anime. The animation is quite standard up to part two but begins flowing with energy from part three. The story is quite straightforward about strong guys fighting monsters. This predictability certainly weighs down part 1 but that contains a character arc and an unexpected ending to push it above most Shounen.Part 2 onwards the techniques and strategy used in a fight are so creative and bizarre you are guaranteed to be entertained. The humour always hits well which is rare for a Shounen and the characters reactions are a joy to watch. The characters themselves are never bad throughout the series but it's only after Part 1 where they truly shine.A 9/10 in my opinion for a good but not great start but an otherwise fantastic series.Definitely check it out.
The Amazing World of Gumball (2011)
One of the funniest CN shows of all time and THE funniest airing today.
I might be in the small percentage of people who don't like CNs new humour. Its childish, irritating and obnoxious. Many of the show's of this nature get a pass for developing their characters or having story arcs.Take Adventure Time:Farts,Radical lingo,Screaming and sexual innuendos do not a good show make.Sure they develop their characters and what not but the humour is very bad.But this show is good. The pop culture references are all clever not shoehorned in like PPG 2016,the parodies of movies are all clever and it makes over the top situations of everyday tasks like regular show.Despite all the slapstick there is a lot of dialogue oriented humour and the punchline of most jokes are the characters interacting with the environment. The characters don't rely on screaming or being overly cutesy or sympathetic to make you like them.In fact they can be downright cruel yet you cannot hate them.A must watch and a 9/10
