Apples Never Fall (2024)
Should be called COMES TO LIGHT
Yes, ignore the low ratings from folks. This has a lovely slow burn. Easy to digest and follow even when it goes back from Then to Now and vice versa. Each episode focuses on a character and their vantage point or pov. Each tell a part of the story which if was spoken or shared, we would have figured out the mystery sooner. But this story is about what's done in the dark, the secrets you keep, the self preservation of yourself affects your life and your family. The decisions we make alter the perspective of others. How they see us and how they see themselves. All of this plays into the telling of the story.
To be honest I thought the ending was going to fall short. But it didn't. They could have however, had an eight episode entitled Savannah. The only mystery is the life and the character of Savannah which is never fully developed or shown. To see her then and now would have warranted a 10/10.
I'll definitely be watching this again. And as a father and husband reminding myself that all my actions and words have a bigger impact and butterfly effect that I could ever imagine.
Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie (2023)
Monk wins but Overkill in the obvious
Here is what happened. He's the guy. The grey flashbacks are nostalgic. The billion dollar answer is why we choose to proceed.
The ocd scenes were obvious and tedious and not funny. The choice to have a character struggle with suicide could get into some conspiracy theories about medication but this film is classic Monk for a tv series from the early 2000s. The CGI is subtle enough but it was great to see characters reprise their roll.
Leaves one asking for more but I can see the series living on with Molly. Although they never explained how she's Trudy's daughter. Left me with more questions that closure.
Surface (2022)
Hello Sunshine does it again!
A woman's view point. A woman's voice. Does she see what she wants, or what they are telling her to see? Does she hear what she needs to hear, or just want they want her to believe? Imagine waking from a dream, but only to live in a nightmare searching for the monster who is chasing you. What if all you say and do only allows you to see the mirror in front of you? What will truth reflect upon the surface and how deep will the light shine past what is clearly visible?
I loved the thrill of trying to figure out whodunnit, while being empathetic for the victim, until you find out how many victims there actually are. Not too thrilling with blood and such, and the tone is just dim enough to see in the dark.
Free Guy (2021)
Hard to watch & Pretend Ryan is someone else
It's a mix of Jim Carrey and. Will Ferrel. Trying to pretend Ryan Renolds is not himself makes it hard to watch. But I was hoping it would be better than a live version of Ralph Breaks The Internet.
The Afterparty (2022)
Too much talent for so many mistakes
It's missing a lot. It's off. Inconsistent. I get the concept and perfect I've of each POV. But the jokes aren't cleaver enough to overcome the cheesiness. It's entertaining just enough to keep watching, but it lacks. Idk it's lackluster is annoying because I want it to get better. Only 3 episodes in, so hopefully they can pull me back to revise my perception.
