Moonfall (2022)
Good SciFi with a unique story
Some people are just unhappy souls who find fault in everything, as I read through some bad reviews. This film is fantastic. The story is unique. The acting and directing are perfect. The special effects are more than acceptable for this genre. The special effects can rival similar films made at Marvel or Disney. With all that said, an essential aspect of this film is the story's uniqueness. That alone should win it some extra review stars.
Hale Berry did her usual great acting, but the person who surprised me the most was John Bradley. He was utterly perfect in his role. He was good in GoT, but he brought true life and realism to his character in this film. If you are a real SciFi fan, more interested in the possibility of a great story, you will enjoy this film. Well done, IMHO.
The Peripheral (2022)
Real Good So Far
This is off to a good start. At first it was going slow. I thought is was going to be a dud. Then the story kicks up a notch and gets your attention. After that it becomes like a good book that you can't put down. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
IMHO this is solid SyFi with a bit of mystery and suspense mixed in. The SFX are more than adequate for the story. The acting is good. This is my first time seeing Chloe Moretz and she's doing great. Jack Reynor is also doing great with his part. So is the rest of the cast
The direction is good. The sets and scenery are perfect. Everything is really good so far.
If you're on the fence about this one give it a try. You won't be sorry.
Earthfall (2015)
Good Grief
Normally I can find something good about a movie, but I can't with this one. This movie was terrible. I can not fine one redeeming quality in this movie. Bad acting across the board. Mediocre sets. Poor direction. The ending was senseless. No entertainment value at all. Thank goodness there is a fast forward or I would have been forced to watch every agonizing minuet. I could go on and on.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Serene Squall (2022)
We Need To See Captain Angel Again
Oh yeah, Jesse James Keitel owed the Captain Angel part. I did not recognize she was as a trans person until after I watched the show and viewed her character on IMDB. I hope we see that character again.
So many parts like that come and go but this one really needs to make more appearances. She is in the memorable category with Admiral Cornwell and so many others from past ST shows.
This was another great episode. What is most remarkable about this one is the wardrobes and the makeup. The pirates had that Mad Max look about them. You can tell the designers and artists went through great lengths to get every detail perfect. It's unfortunate that we no longer get full seasons anymore.
The only thing that bothers me is many of the actors were NOT Star Trek fans before they came aboard. They have to rely on the writers to capture the essence of what is Star Trek but some of the writers were never fans either. That's disturbing.
Fans have to hope the actors understand the writers in order to get it right. So far they are doing good but how much better would the show be if they were prior fans?
For instance, do they know where the impulse engines are?
Jess Bush continues to do a splendid job with Majal Barrett's part. Bush never watched Star Trek according to her Ready Room interview. Does she know that Majal is the creator's wife? And what an endearing, very special part she is playing?
All in all, Strange New Worlds is destined to become a memorable show that you'll want to watch for years to come like TOS, TNG, ENT, VOY and DS9.
To the next 50 years. ENGAGE!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach (2022)
THIS IS STAR TREK
Whoever did the casting for this show did an outstanding job. It's going to be a pleasure to see each character develop over time with the exception of Pike. He won't need any character development. Anson Mount is simply born to be Christopher Pike. He's a good actor. He was good in films like Mr. Right and Seal Team Six too.
All the episodes are solid Star Trek with wonderful SFX, perfect makeup, and great wardrobes. The attention to detail is amazing. The folks involved in making this show truly care about Trek. Caring about the details is why Star Trek has lived in the hearts and minds of so many people for over 50 years. SNW has the opportunity to offer this generation the same dream of living and working in deep space that prior generations had.
It could live on like TOS, TNG, VOY, ENT and DS9 as long as the writers stay focused on Trek and ONLY Trek. Perhaps they should actually watch all of the previous shows AND films.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Good to see the Enterprise back in space
After watching the first 4 episodes I can say this new Trek is GREAT.
With that said, can we get some writers that have actually watched Star Trek?
First, a Star Ship Captain is not called a "Skipper". The Federation is not the Navy for crying out loud.
Next, the first officer could never order a doctor to perform or not perform a medical procedure as Number One did.
Engage.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Children of the Comet (2022)
Space Exploration In The Star Trek Tradition
We're finally back to what Star Trek is all about. It's about space exploration; it's about seeking out new life for first contact; it's about the missions. Its about living and working in deep space. It's about the people who feel a deep connection and loyalty to the family they call The United Federation of Planets. It's about a ship that they call home.
With that said, I'm really liking the helmsman Ortegas. She is the epitome of Trek. So is Ethen Peck as Spock. And t'Pring has completely dethroned t'Pol as the hottest Vulcan woman ever. All we need now are some hot Orion Women .
I won't write any spoilers. All I'll say is this; S1E2 Children of the Comet is a great Trek episode in the true Star Trek tradition. Watch it as soon as you can!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Nothing Strange About Strange New Worlds
Finally, Star Trek is back. THIS is what we've all been waiting for. The missions, the characters, the ship, the relationships, the good vibes and messages that come with the possibility of humankind living and working in deep space.
The showrunner, Akiva Goldsman should do an outstanding job guiding this new series. He loves Trek and that's what it takes to make Trek. He knows the canon but he does not hit us over the head with it. I particularly like his idea of doing episodes for the missions but having the character development as a sequential part of a larger story. Brilliant.
This will be the best TV Star Trek ever made. It will have the best of both worlds. The characters are perfect. Each one of them belong on the Federation's flagship, Enterprise.
I especially like Uhura and Number One so far. The doctor looks like a perfect fit too and so does Ortegas. I was on the fence about Peck playing Spock in Discovery, but I'm digging him on the bridge in this new series. He'll do great.
I can't wait to see how the Kirk character unfolds. The only thing I wish is they would bring back full seasons again. If you have not watched SNW yet do yourself a favor and just do it.
Dog (2022)
Excellent Film
First, let me say that this film will appeal to everyone who loves animals. It has moments of subtle comedy, the kind that only real life can provide, and, it has its tender moments, too. So civilians will certainly enjoy it. With that said, this film will only have a strong emotional impact to those who served in the military, more specifically, in combat. And to be even more specific, anyone who was a combat dog handler. If you are a troubled Vet it may even give you some clues on how to become normal again. I was impressed with the very last scene. In summary, everyone will enjoy this film. Veterans will enjoy and understand it more than non-vets. Combat vets will understand it more than that. Combat dog handlers may shed a tear. Give it a try.
Reacher (2022)
Tom Cruise as Reacher was a tough act to follow
Tom Cruise as Reacher is a tough act to follow but Alan Ritchson did it, and he did it better. He makes the perfect Jack Reacher. The story is good, and the rest of the cast also did a superb job. I was especially impressed with Willa Fitzgerald's part. Malcolm Goodwin also did a great job with his part. I watched the first episode and couldn't stop watching. It's like a good book that you can't put down. So have some popcorn and settle in with enough time to binge watch.
Stasis (2017)
Amazing Store Idea
The idea behind this story (from the trailer) is amazing. That's why I began watching. The flick started off as expected. I was all set to settle in for a great post apocalyptic flick complete with SFX, makeup, props and scenery. But then this movie rapidly descended in to a teenage mystery flick. The scenery, SFX, makeup and props also descended into the abyss. Did they only have enough budget for a good first 15 minutes? And I'm sure the actors could have done a much better job had they had a better script. The writer even had the audacity to mention the temporal timeline as though this was a Star Trek film. Stay in your lane! Do yourself a favor and skip this one unless you are bored out of your mind and there is nothing else to watch.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Oh yeah
Everything about this film is what i like in a sci-fi flick. The store is good and keeps you engaged. They didn't over do the SFX. It was just right. The acting was good for the most part. Rosa Salazar was phenomenal. She makes a perfect AI - Battle Angel. Her fight scenes were natural and well choreographed. If science fiction being set in a post-apocalyptic world is your thing, you'll like this. For all ages.
MegaFault (2009)
Mega disaster movie
I don't get all these bad reviews. This is not a big budget Hollywood movie. Why judge it as one? This is a made-for-tv flick and using that standard this movie is more than OK. It was nice to see Murphy play a serious role. It is too bad she is no longer with us. She could have gone on to be an A list actor.
The Orville: Majority Rule (2017)
Another good episode with a message
In true TNG and ToS style The Orvell displays good messages within the mission. This show is a godsend for us die hard trek fans. Like they say at McDonalds, "I'm Loving It"
The Orville: Krill (2017)
I'm not feeling the Krill
I'm not feeling the Krill. Maybe if they didn't look so much like an Andorian cousin. With that said, the story was good. But a tree growing in outer space stretches one's ability to suspend their disbelief. To the writers: Keep it real; or at least possible and believable. LOL
The Orville: If the Stars Should Appear (2017)
This Show is Part of the Star Trek Universe
This was a good story that unfolded and ended in true Star Trek fashion. The Orwell should be added to the Star Trek universe and hopefully book authors will write side stories about The Orwell just like they have for the other Star Treks
The Orville: About a Girl (2017)
Impressed
The Orwell is handling moral dilemmas in the true Star Trek style while also accounting for modern day subject matter. Good job to the writers. This show is well on its way IMHO
The Orville: Command Performance (2017)
I'm a FAN
This show is off to a good start. It is just what us die hard trekkies have been waiting for.
The Orville: Old Wounds (2017)
This is a good start
I remember thinking how awful TNG was when compared to the OS. Who was this pansey "Cpt Picard" compared to James T Kirk? But in time, TNG evolved, the character's chemistry began to emerge and the episodes got much better. Now, I love watching TNG reruns. The same will happen with The Orwell. The episodes will get stronger, the characters will develop bonds and the show will evolve in to a great unofficial addition to the Star Trek Universe. And believe this. The Orwell should be carrying the Star Trek name and be part of the ST universe. It should be Star Trek Orwell, not Star Trek Discovery. Hopefully we'll have a full 7 seasons.
The Orville (2017)
The Dream of Living and Working in Space is Still Alive with The Orville
The bottom line is Star Trek ( both TV Shows and Movies ) is about living and working in deep space. It's about the exploration. It's about the unknown, about first contact with new species. It's about the characters and their relationships. All this is wrapped around whatever mission they are on. The Orville has all of that and more. It captures the dream of living and working in space. I was extremely disappointed in ST Discovery. I have tried to like it. I want so much to like it. But it does not capture the dream. Hopefully we' will have The Orville around for 7 seasons like Voyager and TNG. Please do not kill it like ToS and Enterprise. Not everything is about a dollar. Have some loyalty to your fans. Keep The Orville around for awhile. One suggestion for the writers. The occasional humor is a nice touch, but that's all it should be, a light touch --occasionally. The last episode about the prime directive was perfect. This show will only continue to evolve and get better.
