The Idol (2023)
Absolutely Terrible
I don't even know where to start with this nightmare. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because there are glimpses of good acting from Lily-Rose Depp. I don't generally care about critics' reviews of things; John Waters' films are some of my favorites.
This show is just one bad scene after another. The Weeknd's scenes are almost unbearable to watch, the weirdly-placed sex scenes are odd, Tedros' group of friends that come into the house and just make every scene even more uncomfortable, The Weeknd recreating the childhood trauma the main character went through, it's just so bad.
The exploitation of young women like Lily-Rose Depp's character is hard enough to watch in real life, watching it on screen with terrible writing and bad acting is not fun. Don't recommend this one.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
A Trip of a Movie!
Don't listen to the contrarians that are "nOt LiKe ThE oThEr GiRlS." Every time a movie is critically acclaimed or has a minority cast, you're going to get ignorant people that tank it. Disregard them! This movie is a great and bizarre watch!
Michelle Yeoh is fantastic as the lead. Her life is crumbling, she's lost all hope in her business endeavors, her marriage is ending, and her daughter barely speaks to her. If all that isn't enough, she's being audited by the IRS and is on the edge. When it seems like it's finally going to fall apart, she gets pulled into a world she didn't know existed and now has to save.
All of the actors in this movie are incredible. They don't just play one character; they play several.
Don't look for deep life lessons from Hollywood. Movies are meant to entertain and that's exactly what this movie does.
The Deep End (2022)
What a ride!
I really enjoyed this documentary! During the first episode, I thought of Teal as a Tony Robbins-type motivational speaker type. By the end, I thought she was an absolute sociopath. Great documentary!
RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars: Snatch Game (2022)
Genius
This episode is one of the best episodes in the entire franchise! The characters the contestants chose and how they executed them are so good. A must watch!
(Un)Well (2020)
Using the big pharma boogie man to sell you snake oil
This documentary is fascinating! From claims that essential oils cure cancer to a woman selling tantric sex sessions over zoom, holistic medicine is big business and it's quite lucrative. Great watch.
Generation Hustle: A Scam with a Beat (2021)
Review for the documentary, not the morals of the subject!
I marked this a 10/10 to offset all of these ridiculous 1/10 reviews. The rating is for the documentary, not whether or not you approve of fraud. Anyway, I give the doc a 7/10. Such a fascinating story! The fact that this kid was able to do all of these things so blatantly is nuts. Wild story.
Jesus Camp (2006)
Scary and Close to Home
This one was nuts! A real look into Christian evangelicalism in America. I generally keep as far away as possible from these people in real life so it's jarring to see how crazy they've become. Praising a cutout of George W. Bush, indoctrinating children, just nuts. Not much has changed, sadly. A good watch!
Friday the 13th (1980)
Great 80's Slasher Flick
Friday the 13th is good, old fashioned, slasher movie fun. It's not incredibly compelling and it's definitely not worthy of awards, but it's a fun one to watch and reminisce. If you've never seen it, give it a watch!
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Adorable, wholesome movie!
If you're looking for terrifying chills and bloody gore, this is not the movie for you. It's made by Disney which should be your first clue. That being said, it's such a great watch! Goofy witches, a talking cat, good Halloween fun all around. Definitely recommend.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Not terrible, but couldn't get through fast enough
This is one of those things that you keep waiting for the good part to come and for everything to make sense...and then when it does you're disappointed. I didn't see the Hill House show so I have nothing to compare it to, but this one was a letdown. I only finished it because I wanted to give it a full chance, but I wished I hadn't. Discombobulated, story jumps around, characters don't make much sense. I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Loved it...until the end
I really enjoyed the first 75% of this movie. The concept of selling out for personal gain was heavy in this movie and it was stellar. For me personally, when you find out the 'twist', the movie is ruined. Still giving it 7 stars because I really enjoyed most of it, just really sucks that it ended the way it did.
